Every reputable lift design includes some form of mechanical locking system, and this is the single most important item on any list of lift safety features. On a two-post lift, that means locking pawls or a ratcheting mechanism that engages automatically as the carriage rises, so if hydraulic pressure ever drops, the vehicle doesn’t fall — it rests on steel. On a four-post lift, it’s usually a set of latches along the columns that lock into place at set height intervals. We check these on every install and every service call, because a lock that’s been painted over, bent, or gummed up with old grease won’t catch when it needs to.

Pressure relief valves prevent the system from being overloaded past its rated capacity, protecting both the cylinder and the frame from stress damage that isn’t always visible from the outside.

We see these components skipped or bypassed more often than you’d expect, usually on older lifts that have been re-hosed by someone in a hurry, or on used equipment bought without a full inspection. Checking arm locks takes thirty seconds during a routine inspection but gets skipped constantly because it’s not as dramatic as checking the main lock. We include it in every service visit anyway. Frayed strands, flat spots, or uneven tension between cables are warning signs that the system is no longer distributing weight the way it’s designed to. Emergency Stop and Control Panel Design

We require legible capacity plates on every lift we install, and if a shop’s existing signage has worn off or gone missing over the years, we’ll replace it during a service visit at no separate charge.

Vehicle positioning matters just as much as the rating itself. A properly rated lift used with mismatched or improperly placed arms and adapters can still fail, not because the lift is defective but because it was used outside its designed geometry. Regular Inspection Is the Feature That Ties It All Together
