Where the Annual Requirement Actually Comes From
There is a lot of confusion about whether an annual inspection is a law, a recommendation, or a warranty condition. The short answer is that it is an industry standard with real legal teeth behind it. ANSI/ALI ALOIM is the standard that governs operation, inspection, and maintenance of automotive lifts, and it calls for a documented inspection at least once every twelve months by a qualified lift inspector. OSHA does not publish a lift-specific rule for automotive service lifts, but OSHA’s general duty clause lets an inspector cite a shop for ignoring a recognized industry consensus standard. That is the hook. If a tech gets hurt and the paperwork shows nobody has looked at that lift in four years, the standard becomes the yardstick you get measured against.

We get asked whether the dealer service department that sold the lift has to be the one to inspect it. The Checklist: What We Look At on a Two-Post
On a surface-mount two-post, the inspection starts before anything moves. We check the nameplate and capacity decal legibility, confirm the ALI/ETL label is present, and verify that the operating instructions and safety manual are actually in the bay rather than lost in a filing cabinet. Then anchors: correct bolt type, correct embedment, torque verified, and the concrete around each base plate checked for cracking or spalling. We see more failed anchor conditions than any other single item, usually in shops where the slab was thinner than the manufacturer specified or where a lift was relocated and re-shot into old holes.
From there it is columns and carriage. We look for weld cracking at the top plates and base, column plumb, carriage slide block wear, and the condition of the equalization cables including sheaves, terminations, and any broken strands or corrosion at the low points. Arms get checked for restraint engagement, pin wear, pad condition and thread engagement on screw pads. Locks are the heart of it: every latch must engage audibly at every position, release cleanly, and hold under load. Hydraulics get a look for cylinder seepage, hose chafing, fitting weeps, and correct fluid level. Finally we test the overhead shutoff bar, the emergency lowering function, and the electrical disconnect. Four-Posts, Scissors, and Inground Lifts Differ
Different lift types fail in different places, and a generic checklist misses things. On a four-post, the four cables and their sheaves carry the whole load path, so cable inspection is the dominant item along with runway condition, slack-cable safety function, and the lock bar engagement in all four columns. Drive-on and drive-off ramps, jacking beam rollers, and turn plates on alignment models all get attention. We also look hard at where the runways meet the crossbeams on older units, because that is where fatigue shows up first.
Mid-rise and full-rise scissor lifts hide almost everything under the platform, which is exactly why they get neglected. Pivot pin wear, cylinder pin retention, torsion bar condition, and the mechanical lock pawls all require getting the lift up and getting underneath with a light. Anyone doing a scissor lift safety inspection without doing that is checking a box, not inspecting anything. Inground lifts add their own list: piston seal condition, environmental containment integrity, cassette or bay drainage, and any evidence of fluid loss into the ground. Mobile column sets need battery health, synchronization checks, and fork or adapter condition on every column, not just the master.
What Fails Most Often in Iowa Shops
If we lined up every deficiency we have written up in the last few years, cables and locks would be at the top. Equalization cables on two-posts stretch, fray at the sheave contact points, and rust where condensation collects, and in an unheated Iowa pole building that corrosion accelerates fast. The shops that keep this current do one thing differently: they tie the inspection to a fixed month rather than to a memory. Pick something slow.
