We’re checking for fraying, kinking, rust, and uneven wear along the length of the cable, not just at the visible ends. A cable that looks fine at the pulley can be badly worn where it runs through a conduit you can’t see without pulling a cover. We also check that both sides of the lift rise and lower evenly, because a cable stretching more on one side than the other is an early warning sign that something needs adjusted or replaced before it becomes a real problem.

Locking mechanisms get just as much attention. Every lift has a way to mechanically hold the carriage in place once it’s raised, whether that’s a ratchet-style lock, a pin, or a hydraulic locking system. We test that each lock engages fully and that the release mechanism doesn’t stick or require extra force. A lock that’s slow to engage or that skips a notch under load is not something to wait on. Loose wiring, corroded connections, and worn switch housings all get flagged during a thorough inspection.

We also check the motor for unusual heat, noise, or slow response time, since electrical strain often shows up as a performance issue before it shows up as a full failure. Documentation, Load Rating, And Usage History

Part of what we check isn’t mechanical at all. We also check maintenance records, prior inspection reports, and any repair history, because a pattern of repeat issues in the same area often points to a root cause that a one-time fix won’t solve.

Most manufacturers recommend an annual inspection at minimum, but shops running lifts multiple shifts a day or in high-humidity, high-dust environments often benefit from checking in twice a year.
