Start With Power, Not the Hydraulics

It’s tempting to crawl underneath and start pulling hoses apart, but nine times out of ten the actual problem is upstream of anything hydraulic. Check that the disconnect switch is on, the breaker hasn’t tripped, and the power cord (on portable units) is fully seated. Two-post and four-post lifts pull a real amount of current on startup, and a marginal breaker or an extension cord that’s too long for the run can cause voltage drop that stalls the motor before it builds pressure.
Listen closely when you hit the up button. If you hear the motor humming but the lift doesn’t move, that’s a different problem than dead silence. A humming motor with no movement usually points to a bad capacitor, a seized pump, or a stuck check valve holding pressure from getting to the cylinder. Total silence points to power delivery — a tripped thermal overload, a bad contactor, or a loose connection at the motor itself. Pop the cover on the power unit and visually inspect for scorched wires or a tripped reset button on the motor housing before calling it a pump failure. This five-minute check rules out the cheapest, fastest fixes first and keeps you from ordering parts you don’t need.
Check the Hydraulic Fluid Level and Quality
Low fluid is the single most common reason a lift won’t go up, and it’s the easiest thing to overlook because the reservoir is usually tucked inside the power unit housing where you can’t see it without opening the cover. Pull the dipstick or check the sight glass and compare against the fill line. If it’s low, top it off with the fluid type specified for your model — most Rotary and Challenger units run standard hydraulic oil, but don’t guess; using the wrong viscosity can cause the same symptoms you’re trying to fix.
While you’re in there, look at the fluid’s condition. Fluid that’s milky or has visible metal flecks suggests water contamination or internal pump wear, and simply topping it off won’t solve the underlying issue for long. Air in the lines from a low fluid condition can also cause the pump to run without building pressure, which mimics a pump failure. If you’ve recently had hose or cylinder work done, air in the system is even more likely, and you may need to bleed the lines according to your manufacturer’s procedure. Inspect the Solenoid and Control Valve

If your lift sees light use in a home garage, this is more likely than on a shop lift that cycles daily and keeps fluid moving. Cleaning or replacing the valve is inexpensive compared to a full power unit, so it’s worth ruling out before assuming you need a new pump assembly entirely.
Look for Mechanical Locks Engaged
Two-post lifts in particular have safety locks that engage automatically as the carriage travels up the column, and if a lock arm is bent, dirty, or hanging up, it can physically prevent the lift from rising past a certain point — or prevent it from moving at all if it’s jammed at the bottom. Check that the lock release cable (on cable-release models) has proper tension and travel, and that the pawl or dog isn’t bent or rusted in place. A lift that inches up a few inches and then stops dead is often fighting a lock, not a hydraulic issue.
Four-post and scissor lifts have their own version of this problem with safety latches or lock bars that need to disengage before the platform travels. If these mechanisms are painted over, rusted, or missing a return spring, they can bind. A quick visual inspection and a shot of dry lubricant on the pivot points often frees things up. This is one of the few causes on this list that’s purely mechanical, so if you’ve already checked power, fluid, and the solenoid, the locks deserve a close look.
Rule Out Air Lift and Cylinder-Specific Issues
Air-assisted and air-over-hydraulic lifts add another variable: shop air supply. If your compressor pressure is low, or the air line to the lift has a kink or a bad quick-connect fitting, the lift may not have enough assist pressure to raise under load even though the hydraulic side is functioning normally. Check your shop’s air pressure gauge and confirm it’s within the range your lift manufacturer specifies before assuming the hydraulic pump is the culprit.
On single-cylinder in-ground and some two-post lifts, a worn cylinder seal can let fluid bypass internally, so the pump builds pressure but the cylinder can’t hold it long enough to climb. This shows up as a lift that rises very slowly, shudders, or drifts back down under load. If you suspect this, a cylinder inspection is worth scheduling rather than continuing to run the unit, since a failing cylinder under a vehicle is a safety concern, not just an inconvenience. When the Problem Is the Motor or Pump Itself
If you’ve worked through power, fluid, the solenoid, and mechanical locks and the lift still won’t respond, the motor or pump assembly itself is the remaining suspect. A worn pump can lose its ability to build pressure even while spinning freely, which feels identical to a fluid or valve problem from the driver’s seat but requires a different fix. Listen for grinding, whining, or a change in motor pitch compared to when the lift was new — these are signs of internal wear that a fluid top-off won’t resolve.
Rebuilding or replacing a power unit is a bigger job, but it’s usually still cheaper than replacing the whole lift, and most commercial brands like Rotary and Challenger have power units available as a bolt-in assembly rather than requiring individual part sourcing.
