Myth 1: Overhead Lifts Are Always the Budget Option

This is the myth we hear most from shops shopping strictly on price. Overhead-style two-post lifts can run cheaper in some cases, but only because they use less steel in the header. The tradeoff is that you need real ceiling height to clear the crossbar, and a lot of older Waterloo shop buildings simply don’t have it. If your ceiling is under about 12 feet, an overhead configuration on a low profile car lift can force you into a shorter rise or clip your lift height before the vehicle is fully up, which defeats the purpose of buying it in the first place.

Myth 2: Baseplate Means Less Structural Support

The second myth is almost the opposite problem — shop owners assume baseplate lifts are inherently less rigid because they’re missing the top crossbar. In reality, a properly engineered baseplate two-post lift ties its columns together through the floor plate and anchoring pattern, not through an overhead beam. Rotary and Challenger both build baseplate versions of their two-post lines specifically because commercial shops need that low profile car lift footprint without sacrificing the load rating.

Where this myth causes real problems is when a shop tries to cut corners on the anchoring instead of the lift itself. A baseplate configuration puts more reliance on your concrete and your anchor bolts doing their job correctly, so we always pull a core sample or at minimum confirm slab thickness before we install. If your Waterloo shop has anything less than 4 inches of properly cured concrete, we’re going to flag it before your low profile car lift goes anywhere near that spot on the floor.

If you ever expand or move the shop, a baseplate low profile car lift configuration is easier to relocate and re-anchor because you’re not constrained by a specific ceiling height at the next building. Configuration and capacity are two separate questions, but shop owners frequently conflate them. What it does tell you is whether the lift can safely handle the heaviest vehicle you’ll actually put on it, including any add-on weight like tool boxes or aftermarket parts.

We size to your heaviest realistic vehicle, not your average one, because undersizing a lift to save a few hundred dollars is the single most common regret we hear about after the fact. Get the capacity right first, then let ceiling and floor conditions decide overhead versus baseplate.

Installation Realities We See on Waterloo Jobs
