Why Measuring Your Shop for a Lift Comes Before Picking a Model
Most people shop for a lift backwards. They fall in love with a model, check the price, and only then think about whether it fits. We tell every caller the same thing: measuring your shop for a lift is step one, not step three. The lift you can actually install correctly is the only lift worth buying, no matter how good a deal looks online.
This matters more in Iowa than people expect, because so many of our shops are older pole barns, converted machine sheds, or additions built decades before anyone thought about running a two-post lift inside. Ceiling trusses, low headers, and support posts down the middle of the bay are common. Ceiling Height Is the Number That Trips Up Most Iowa Garages
Overhead clearance is the single measurement that eliminates more lift options than any other. You need the distance from your finished floor to the lowest obstruction — not just the ceiling deck, but light fixtures, sprinkler heads, HVAC ductwork, and any bar joists or trusses that hang down. Two-post lifts need enough height for the vehicle plus the columns and overhead beam or cable system, and four-post lifts need room for the full rise plus a vehicle sitting on top of it.
We ask every customer to measure at several points across the bay, not just the middle, because older buildings often have uneven trusses or a slight slope to the roof deck. If your ceiling is under 12 feet, you’re likely looking at a low-ceiling two-post model or a mid-rise/scissor lift instead of a standard four-post. This is exactly the kind of detail that gets missed when someone eyeballs the room instead of pulling out a tape measure and a ladder.
Floor Space, Bay Width, and Column Placement
After ceiling height, the next thing we check is the actual footprint of the bay: width, depth, and where your walls, doors, and any support columns sit. A two-post lift needs enough width between columns to swing wide doors open on a full-size truck without hitting the posts, plus clearance on both sides to walk around comfortably. A four-post lift needs a longer straight run, since the vehicle drives the full length of the runways.
Don’t forget the space around the lift, not just under it. You need room to open vehicle doors fully, roll a jack around the perimeter, and get a floor creeper underneath without banging into a wall or a tool chest. Door Height and Drive-In Clearance

Measure your door height with the tallest vehicle you plan to service in mind, including any lift kits, roof racks, or ladder racks already on the truck.
Also check door width against your widest vehicle plus mirrors folded in, and think about the approach angle from outside. A short driveway apron or a steep transition into the shop can scrape a low front bumper before the vehicle even reaches the lift. Concrete Thickness and Anchoring Requirements
Floor space and ceiling height get all the attention, but concrete is just as important and gets skipped constantly. Every two-post and four-post lift has a minimum slab thickness and cure time from the manufacturer, and anchoring into cracked, thin, or poorly cured concrete is one of the fastest ways to void a warranty or create a genuine safety hazard.
