When an RV and trailer service shop in West Des Moines called us about a mechanics car lift for their bay, the first question wasn’t brand or capacity. It was overhead versus baseplate. Why Ceiling Height Decided the Configuration
This shop’s bay had roughly 14 feet of clearance, which sounds generous until you factor in an overhead-style mechanics car lift and its crossbar. Overhead units route the top beam across the ceiling area of the columns, which frees up floor space above the vehicle but eats into headroom you might need for a raised RV or a truck with a roof rack. Baseplate models, by contrast, tie the columns together at the floor, which means no overhead beam to duck under but a steel plate connecting the posts at ground level.
For general daily maintenance work on cars, pickups, and smaller trailers, we walked this shop through both. Then think about your floor traffic — how often people, carts, and parts move through that bay space. Those two answers will point you toward the right configuration faster than any brochure will.
