We spent a full afternoon last month with a restoration shop owner near the Iowa-Missouri border who was debating three different budget tiers, two different power feeds, and one big question about how many decades he needed the equipment to last. This piece is the actual decision tree we walked with him, from budget bands through single-phase versus three-phase power. Where This Decision Tree Starts: Restoration Shop Realities

The customer owns a two-bay restoration shop in a small town straddling the Iowa-Missouri line. He handles ground-up rebuilds of 1960s and 1970s American muscle plus the occasional truck project. His work is not high-volume, but each project stays on his floor for months. That means whatever lifting solution he picks lives with him not for a Saturday but for years of on-and-off use, sometimes lifting the same rolling chassis a hundred times over a build.

His starting question was simple: how cheap can he go on a mid rise scissor lift before he compromises the work? That framing is the right way to start. The wrong framing is chasing the top of the line for prestige, or chasing the bottom for a single Saturday project. We told him up front there is no single correct answer, only the answer that matches his budget, his power feed, his ceiling, and his projected use across a decade. Then we drew the decision tree on the whiteboard.

Budget Tier 1: Under $4K Portable Options

The bottom band on any mid rise scissor lift conversation is the portable low-rise pad unit. These list under $4,000, often under $3,000, and they solve one problem: getting a car six to twenty-four inches off the ground for tire, brake, and low-suspension work. They are not really mid-rise in the technical sense, but the search intent overlaps and we always explain the distinction.

For a restoration shop, we usually rule out this tier immediately because rise height caps out at a working posture that still requires a creeper. On a stripped-down rolling chassis, low-rise gets you moving, but it does not put a coil spring or shock at chest height. The customer had already used a portable pad unit at a friend’s shop and knew the limitation firsthand. We noted the tier for completeness and moved up. If you are a hobbyist working three weekends a year, this tier can make sense. For a working restoration shop, it does not.

Budget Tier 2: $4K to $7K Frame-Contact Mid Rise

The middle band is the true mid rise scissor lift class. List prices land between $4,000 and $7,000 depending on capacity, brand, and certification. Rise height in this tier runs 40 to 48 inches, capacity ranges from 6,000 to 7,000 lb, and most units come ALI certified. This is where the majority of home-garage and light-commercial installs land, and it is the tier we usually spend the most time exploring with restoration customers.

For our Iowa-Missouri border customer, this tier looked right at first pass. Capacity comfortably handles his heaviest project chassis. Rise height puts shocks and coils at chest level. Footprint fits inside his 22-foot bay depth. The one concern was cycle time and duty. A restoration shop that lifts the same chassis a hundred times over a build wants a pump that does not overheat and safety locks that do not wear prematurely. That pushed us to look at the top of this tier rather than the bottom, and to compare it against tier three before making the call.

Budget Tier 3: $7K to $12K Full-Feature Mid Rise Scissor Lift

The top band is heavier commercial mid rise scissor lift equipment. List prices run $7,000 to $12,000, capacities push to 10,000 lb or beyond, and duty cycles are rated for high-frequency shop use. Rise heights extend to 48 inches or more, and cylinder designs are heavier with larger bore diameters and thicker chrome on the rods. These are the units you find in dealership tire bays and busy independent shops.

For a restoration shop, tier three is often overkill on pure spec but not on longevity. If the customer plans to work in the shop for 15 more years, a tier-three unit will still be cycling smoothly at year 15 while a tier-two unit might need a rebuild kit by year 8. We laid out the total-cost-of-ownership math on the whiteboard. Difference between tier two and tier three at year one was about $2,500. Difference at year ten, factoring an expected rebuild on the tier-two unit, dropped to roughly $1,800. He called that a manageable premium for peace of mind and started to lean toward the higher band, especially given he uses his equipment as much as some dealership techs.

Single-Phase 110V vs 220V Power

Power feed is the next branch of the decision tree. A tier-two mid rise scissor lift usually runs 110V single-phase and pulls a 20-amp dedicated circuit. A tier-three unit almost always runs 220V single-phase and pulls a 20 or 30-amp two-pole breaker. Cycle time on 220V is noticeably faster and the pump runs cooler because the motor is under less amp stress at the same load.

For our customer, his shop had 220V already in the panel for a MIG welder and an air compressor. Running a dedicated 220V circuit to a new lift was a short conduit run, not a service upgrade. That meant tier three did not add hidden electrical cost. If your shop only has 110V in the working bay, you need to price a subpanel or a new circuit before you compare the lift tiers, because the electrical add can equal the lift cost difference. We always ask about panel capacity before we quote equipment, so the customer is not surprised by an install-day electrical bill.

Three-Phase Where Available

Three-phase power is the outer branch that most restoration shops rule out early. It is common in industrial buildings and rare in rural residential-adjacent shops. If your shop has three-phase, some heavier commercial mid rise scissor lift models offer a three-phase pump option that runs cooler and smoother than any single-phase unit at the same capacity. It is the right answer for high-volume dealerships and fleet shops.

For our Iowa-Missouri border customer, three-phase was not available in his rural service drop, so we crossed that branch off the tree without lingering on it. Most restoration shops land on 220V single-phase as the sweet spot: enough power for smooth cycles, no infrastructure upgrade required, and factory support widely available. The Final Call: Matching Lift to Restoration Bay

The final call for this restoration shop was a tier-three mid rise scissor lift with 7,000 lb capacity, 44-inch platform rise, ALI Gold certification, and a 220V single-phase pump. We chose 7,000 lb rather than 10,000 lb because his heaviest project chassis rolls in at 4,200 lb, and the smaller cylinder still gives him a 65 percent safety margin. Platform rise put every suspension and shock working point at his chest level. Certification protected him on insurance and eventual resale.

Install ran three days including electrical routing and slab prep. First job was a coil spring swap on his current project car, and he texted us a photo of the springs on the bench next to a beer. He estimates the equipment will pay for itself in labor savings inside three years of active project work, and it will still be running smoothly at year 15. That is what a good decision tree produces: not the cheapest answer, not the most expensive answer, but the one that matches the actual shop and the actual work over the actual timeframe.
