Myth #1: Mid Rise Scissor Lifts Can’t Do True Wheel Alignments

This is the myth we hear most often, and it usually comes from someone who worked with an old-style flush-mount lift that lacked turnplates or slip plates. Modern alignment-ready scissor lifts are built specifically for this job, with open-center designs that let a technician get underneath for camber and toe adjustments while the vehicle sits level on the runways. Add a set of turnplates at the front and rear slip plates, and you’ve got a legitimate alignment rack that costs less than a comparable inground lift and installs without cutting concrete.

For EV work specifically, this matters even more. Battery packs sit low and wide, and alignment geometry on EVs is often tighter tolerance than on combustion vehicles because of how weight distribution affects tire wear. A mid rise scissor lift with the correct rise height gives you clean sightlines and workspace without needing a full-rise inground system. When we help a shop compare models, we’re looking at overall rise (most alignment-capable mid rise units land between 18 and 24 inches lower than full-rise scissors, working in tandem with an air-operated jack for wheels-free access), runway width for wider EV tire packages, and whether the unit is a flush-mount or surface-mount design. Flush-mount installs sit in a shallow pit and keep your shop floor level, which some EV shops prefer for battery service carts and rolling equipment. Surface-mount units skip the pit work entirely and can often be installed in a day. Neither is wrong — it depends on your floor and your workflow.

The Common Mistake: Buying Based on Price Alone

We’ve watched shops make this mistake more than once. A lift quote comes in a few hundred dollars cheaper, and the shop owner assumes the specs are close enough. Then the unit arrives and the runway is too short for the wheelbase they actually service, or the rise height doesn’t clear a lifted service cart. At that point, the cheaper lift isn’t cheaper anymore — it’s a lift that doesn’t do the job it was bought for.

The fix is simple: write down your actual vehicle mix before you shop. If you’re servicing EV sedans and crossovers, measure a representative wheelbase and note your ceiling height. If you’re doing alignment work, decide now whether you want turnplates and slip plates included or added later. Runway Length and Wheelbase: The Spec Nobody Checks

Wheelbase is the spec most shop owners forget to check when comparing scissor lift models, and it’s especially relevant for EV shops because EV wheelbases vary widely, from compact hatchbacks to full-size trucks. A runway that’s too short means the vehicle’s wheels hang over the edge of the platform, which is both unsafe and useless for alignment work where you need full contact and stability.

Before finalizing any model comparison, we ask shops for their three most common vehicles by wheelbase and cross-check that against the scissor lift’s platform length. For shops with a wide vehicle mix — say, EV sedans one day and electric delivery vans the next — we sometimes recommend a longer platform model even if it costs a bit more, because retrofitting or upgrading later means downtime and a second installation. Getting this right the first time is cheaper than getting it right the second time.

Installation Realities for Southwest Iowa Shops

Southwest Iowa shops deal with older buildings more often than you’d think — converted service stations, repurposed ag buildings, and shops with uneven or aging concrete.
