If you’re a weekend mechanic in east-central Iowa planning a garage build-out around exhaust work and driveline access, a mid rise scissor lift is probably the smartest piece of equipment you’ll buy this year — but only if you sequence the purchase correctly. We’ve walked plenty of hobbyists through this exact process, and the guys who get frustrated are almost always the ones who bought the lift before they thought through their floor, their ceiling height, and what they’re actually going to be doing underneath the car. This checklist walks through what to nail down before you place an order, in the order it actually matters.

Step One: Figure Out What Height You Actually Need Under the Car

Before you look at a single spec sheet, stand next to your daily driver or project vehicle and decide honestly how you work. Exhaust and driveline jobs — swapping a cat, dropping a driveshaft, servicing a transfer case — usually don’t require you to stand fully upright underneath the vehicle the way an oil change tech does all day. A mid rise scissor lift that gets the car up 24 to 36 inches is often plenty if you’re comfortable working from a creeper or on one knee for the actual wrench time, only using the lift’s higher settings for inspection and cleanup work.

Where hobbyists get this wrong is assuming more height is always better. A taller lift costs more, needs a taller ceiling, and in a home garage with an 8 or 9 foot ceiling you may not even be able to use the top of its range once the vehicle is loaded. We’ve had callers on the phone comparing a 10,000 lb unit to a 12,000 lb unit and the price jump wasn’t about capacity at all — it was about the extra lift height and the beefier hydraulics needed to get there. If your garage has a lower ceiling, spend your money on a solid mid-range rise height rather than chasing a number you’ll never use.

Step Two: Confirm Your Vehicle’s Actual Weight, Not a Guess

Most weekend mechanics underestimate what their vehicle weighs, especially if it’s a full-size truck or SUV with a job box, toolbox, or aftermarket bumper added. A half-ton pickup with no extra gear is a very different load than the same truck loaded down with tools and a trailer hitch package. Be honest about what you’re actually lifting, because undersizing a mid rise scissor lift is the single most common mistake we see in home garage installs.

As a rule of thumb, if your heaviest vehicle is a bare pickup or SUV, a lift in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range usually has margin to spare. If you’re regularly working on anything with a full toolbox, snowplow mount, or towing package, step up to a 12,000 lb rated unit even if it costs more up front. It’s cheaper to buy the right capacity once than to replace a lift two years later because you outgrew it.

Step Three: Measure Your Floor Before You Measure Anything Else

Every mid rise scissor lift installation starts with the concrete, not the lift itself. We need a slab that’s thick enough and in good enough condition to anchor the unit safely, and older Iowa garages — especially ones built decades ago for a single car — sometimes have thinner or cracked slabs that need addressing first. Get a straight answer on your slab thickness before you commit to a purchase date, because pouring new concrete or patching a bad section takes time and changes your install schedule.

This is also the point to decide between a flush-mounted install versus a surface-mount unit that sits directly on top of the floor. Flush mounting looks cleaner and keeps the lift out of the way when it’s down, but it requires cutting into the slab. Surface mount is faster to install and easier if you’re not sure this is your forever garage. Either way, get this decided before your lift ships so there’s no lag between delivery and install day.

Step Four: Plan Your Power and Clearance Before Delivery Day

Most mid rise scissor lifts run on standard 220-240V single phase power, but plenty of home garages in east-central Iowa still only have 110V circuits run to them. If you’re building out a garage from scratch or renovating an older detached garage, get an electrician scheduled to run the right circuit well before your lift shows up — waiting until delivery day to discover you can’t power the unit is a frustrating and avoidable delay.

Overhead clearance matters just as much as floor space. Measure from the garage floor to the lowest point of your ceiling, including any garage door tracks, light fixtures, or ductwork that might be in the way. A mid rise scissor lift with a lower overall rise height is often the right call specifically because it fits under obstacles that would rule out a taller two-post or four-post unit. Don’t assume — measure, then double check against the lift’s actual raised height including the vehicle on top of it.

Step Five: Decide Where in Your Build-Out Sequence the Lift Actually Goes

If you’re doing a full garage build-out — insulation, drywall, epoxy flooring, cabinetry — the lift installation needs to happen at a specific point in that sequence, not whenever it’s convenient. Flush-mounted lifts need the concrete work done before flooring goes in. Surface-mounted lifts are more forgiving and can often go in after epoxy coating, though you’ll want to protect the floor finish during anchoring.

We generally recommend finishing structural work — walls, electrical, any concrete patching — before the lift arrives, then scheduling the install right before or right after flooring goes down depending on the mount type. Trying to install a mid rise scissor lift in the middle of active construction, with contractors and materials still moving through the space, just creates safety hazards and installation delays. Sequence it deliberately and the whole build-out moves faster.

Step Six: Weigh Rise Height Against What You’ll Actually Use Weekly

It’s worth revisiting height one more time because it drives so much of the decision. If your typical Saturday is oil changes, brake jobs, and the occasional exhaust repair, a mid-height setting that lets you comfortably reach the underside without full standing clearance is usually enough. The desire to walk fully upright under a raised vehicle is understandable, but it adds cost and ceiling requirements that a lot of home garages simply can’t accommodate.

Think about your actual project list for the next two or three years, not an idealized dream garage. If driveline swaps and exhaust work are your bread and butter, a mid rise scissor lift sized for those tasks — rather than a full-rise unit built for a commercial shop — will save you money on both the equipment and the electrical and ceiling work needed to support it.

Step Seven: Get the Install Done Right, Not Just Fast

A lot of hobbyists try to save money by installing the lift themselves, and while it’s possible with the right tools and patience, a mid rise scissor lift involves hydraulic lines, safety locks, and anchoring specs that need to be done correctly the first time. A poorly anchored lift or a hydraulic system that wasn’t bled properly isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a safety issue for you and anyone else who steps into your garage.
