An eastern-Nebraska independent shop that works only European marques called us after their old lift refused to hold at height on a BMW 5-Series with the exhaust dropped. The owner was convinced the mid rise scissor lift concept was inherently unsafe for the exhaust-and-driveline work that fills his day. He wasn’t right, but the reasons he wasn’t right are worth writing down, because these same myths cost shops real money every year. The European-Car Exhaust and Driveline Access Problem

Modern European cars are architected around integrated exhaust systems and long, complex driveline packages. To drop a BMW 5-Series exhaust you need clearance under the crossmember, room to swing a torque wrench at the transmission bracket, and enough height that the shop tech isn’t lying on his back. A two-post gives you all of that, but it takes minutes to align, and you’re working around swing arms. A mid rise scissor lift does something different: it lifts the whole vehicle straight up on pads, gives you a clean 45-inch working window at the mid-line, and leaves the wheels off the ground for suspension access. For a European-marque shop turning six or eight of these a day, cycle time is money. The complaint the Nebraska owner had wasn’t the lift concept — it was a bad build with the wrong pad type. Which is exactly where the myths start.

Myth: A Mid Rise Scissor Lift Doesn’t Need Arm Restraints

This is the myth that trips up more shops than any other. On a two-post, the arms swing and lock — you know arm restraints are there. On a scissor, there are no swing arms, so people assume nothing needs restraining. Wrong. A mid rise scissor lift has pad columns or cross-arms that pivot at the top platform to reach the vehicle’s lift points. Those pivots need positive locks. A pinch-weld pad that shifts under load, or a cross-arm that walks off its pivot when a tech leans against a subframe, is exactly how a car comes off a lift. Any certified professional mid rise scissor lift has a positive-lock or spring-loaded restraint on every pad point. When you’re comparing models, put a hand on each pad and try to move it. If it moves freely with the lift down, that’s a red flag. Certified lifts don’t do that.

Myth: Safety Cams Are Just a Marketing Gimmick

Safety cams — sometimes called safety-lock ladders — are the mechanical backup that engages every couple of inches of scissor travel. If a hydraulic hose burst, the lift drops to the next lock and holds. Shops sometimes tell us they “never hear them engage,” and conclude they’re not really working. They are working — you’re hearing the click each time you set the lift down at a fixed height. The myth is that you can skip the safety-cam feature and rely on hydraulic hold-off valves. You cannot. Hydraulic valves fail slowly and silently; mechanical safety cams either hold or they don’t, and you can inspect them. Every mid rise scissor lift we sell has a documented safety-cam interval and a real inspection procedure. If a lift’s cams are proprietary parts with no rebuild path — that’s a lift to avoid.

Myth: Any Pad Works for a European Car

European unibody vehicles almost universally use a pinch-weld lift point. Domestic body-on-frame trucks use flat lift-points on the frame rail. A universal flat pad works for the truck. It does not work for the BMW — it crushes the pinch weld or slides on the paint. A proper European-marque pad is a slot-and-block pinch-weld pad, sometimes with a rubber insert cutout to match factory jacking points. The Nebraska shop’s original mid rise scissor lift shipped with flat cross-pads and never with pinch-weld inserts. That’s what “refused to hold” actually meant — the pad was walking off the pinch weld under the tech’s own leverage. We swapped the cross-pads for a pinch-weld kit, and the problem disappeared. Ask about pad options before you buy.

Myth: Bigger Capacity Always Wins

The jump from a 9,000-pound to a 12,000-pound mid rise scissor lift feels safer on paper, so people size up. It’s not always the right call. A larger-capacity lift means longer pad platforms, which means the pads may not reach European pinch-weld points cleanly — they’re spaced for full-size trucks. For a shop that works exclusively on European sedans and hot-hatches, a 9,000-pound rated lift with correctly-spaced pads is safer than a 12,000-pound lift where the pads don’t sit under the actual jacking points. Capacity is one variable of several. Match the lift’s geometry to the vehicles you actually work on.

What Actually Engages When You Lift a BMW on a Scissor

Walk through it. The tech drives the car onto the platform, aligns the pinch-weld pads to the four factory jacking indicators, and hits raise. The hydraulic pump moves fluid into the scissor cylinders, the arms extend, and every two inches of vertical travel the safety-cam ladder clicks past a fresh lock notch. When the tech releases the raise button, the cylinder holds under hydraulic pressure and the safety cam sits in the last notch it clicked past — that’s a dual hold. Arm restraints (pad-column locks) keep the pads themselves from walking. Every one of those systems has to work independently. When they do, a mid rise scissor lift is one of the safest ways to work under a European car. When any one fails, you notice — because the ecosystem is designed to make failure loud.

Buying the Right Mid Rise Scissor Lift the First Time

The Nebraska shop kept the original lift’s frame but replaced the pads, added a factory pinch-weld kit, and inspected every safety cam per the manufacturer’s procedure. Total spend was a small fraction of a new lift, and the shop stopped losing hours to bad pad geometry.
