A mid rise scissor lift ended up being the surprise answer to a symmetric vs asymmetric debate we had last spring with a Des Moines metro overlanding builder. The customer walks into these conversations already knowing the two-post terminology, because he has used both configurations at friends’ shops and thought he wanted an asymmetric two-post for his personal build shop. What he actually needed was different, and this case study walks through how the conversation unfolded, why a mid rise scissor lift solved his problem better than either two-post option, and what the transmission service workflow looks like on the finished install. It is a good example of matching equipment to actual use, not to prior mental models.

The Des Moines Overlanding Build That Started This Case Study

Our customer builds heavily modified overland rigs out of a converted pole building southeast of Des Moines. Think stretched wheelbase pickups, custom skid plates, roof-mounted tent platforms, and rear bumper swaps that add another two feet of overhang. Every rig on his floor is either taller, wider, or longer than a factory pickup. He came to us thinking he wanted an asymmetric two-post to load doors clear at chest-height, because that is what he had used at a friend’s shop.

We spent the first hour asking about his actual work. He does mostly bumper install, skid plate fabrication, roof rack mounting, and transmission service. Very little pure suspension work. He rarely opens doors on lifted vehicles because his customers do not want scuffed sills. And he almost never lifts a completed rig to full two-post height, because most of his fabrication happens at chest level. That last data point is what pushed the recommendation toward a mid rise scissor lift instead of either two-post configuration.

Symmetric Arms Explained

Symmetric two-post lifts place the posts directly across from each other, with equal-length arms front and rear. The vehicle sits with its centerline midway between the posts. Symmetric geometry is ideal for trucks, SUVs, and vans because the load distribution is roughly balanced front-to-rear. Arm swing is easy to reach on all four corners. The trade-off is that the doors do not clear the posts, so opening a driver’s door on a lifted vehicle is not always possible without repositioning.

For our Des Moines overlander, symmetric geometry would have worked mechanically because his vehicles are all trucks. But the arm swing at full extension pushed against his workbench line, and the vehicle centerline would have been closer to his welding area than we wanted. The symmetric option scored well on paper and poorly on shop flow when we walked the actual floor plan. That is a common lesson: a two-post spec sheet does not tell you whether it fits your actual working space until you draw the arm envelope on the slab with a chalk line.

Asymmetric Arms Explained

Asymmetric two-post lifts rotate the posts so the vehicle sits with its center of mass closer to the front posts. Rear arms are longer, front arms are shorter, and the vehicle door line ends up clear of the post. That is the door-clearance advantage everyone talks about. The trade-off is a narrower window of vehicles that balance correctly on an asymmetric configuration. Longer trucks and vans can be nose-heavy or tail-heavy relative to the pad positions.

For an overlanding shop where every rig has a custom rear bumper and a spare tire carrier, the asymmetric weight math gets complicated fast. Two of his existing rigs would have loaded rear-heavy on an asymmetric configuration, which means arm-pad positions would sit near the extreme of the recommended envelope. That is not a safety issue on a properly rated lift, but it eats into ergonomic margin and it makes daily pad-setting slower because the tech has to think about weight balance every time. We flagged this concern early and it stuck with him.

Why a Mid Rise Scissor Lift Sidesteps This Debate

A mid rise scissor lift eliminates the symmetric vs asymmetric decision entirely because there are no arms to swing. The vehicle drives onto the platforms or sits over them, pads set at frame pickup points, and the lift cycles straight up. Arm envelope is not a concept. Doors on lifted vehicles open freely because nothing is in the way. Weight balance is inherent to platform positioning rather than to arm geometry, and it is easier to eyeball correctly.

For an overlanding shop where chest-height fabrication is the primary workflow, the rise-height range of a mid rise scissor lift is actually the ideal working height. He does not need seven feet of overhead clearance. He needs 30 to 44 inches so he can weld, drill, and cut at his own arm level. That is precisely the range this class of equipment covers. Once he saw the geometry demonstrated in our showroom, the two-post debate ended in about fifteen minutes and we started sizing platforms and capacity instead of debating arm layouts.

Transmission Service Requirements

Transmission service on modified pickups is one of the harder use cases for any lift because the trans, transfer case, and rear driveshaft are all heavy, awkward, and mounted in tight spaces. On a mid rise scissor lift, the vehicle sits with all four wheels off the ground and pinch welds bearing the weight, which frees the entire driveline for removal. The tech uses a rolling transmission jack under the case, unbolts the crossmember, disconnects the driveshafts, and rolls the whole assembly out from under the vehicle.

The one thing to watch on this style is drop clearance under the vehicle. A modified overland rig with a beefed-up skid plate might have less floor clearance than a stock pickup, and the transmission jack needs to travel down as the case comes out. We spec’d a low-profile jack for this customer and confirmed the rise height plus jack travel gave him five inches of margin at the lowest working point. That is the kind of detail that only comes out of a real conversation before you buy, not from a spec sheet. We check it on every install where transmission work is a stated use case.

What We Recommended for the Overlander

The final recommendation was a mid rise scissor lift with 7,000 lb capacity, 44-inch platform rise, and 220V single-phase power. Capacity gave him headroom for his heaviest modified truck (loaded curb weight around 6,300 lb) without running the equipment at redline. Platform rise put every one of his chest-height fabrication jobs at proper working posture. Power feed matched the panel he already had, so no electrical service upgrade was needed.

We also spec’d a set of adjustable pad extensions because his skid-plated rigs have varied frame pickup heights. Extensions swap in about ten seconds each and add three or five inches of vertical reach per pad. Total install package came in inside his budget and left room for the transmission jack, an air-tool reel, and a wall-mounted spool of MIG wire he had been meaning to add. This is what a properly matched equipment recommendation looks like: it solves the stated problem and leaves budget for the workflow tools that make the whole shop function better.

Install and First-Job Results

Install went smooth. Slab was 20 years old but well over spec, anchors landed cleanly, and the pump commissioned on the first cycle. First job on the new mid rise scissor lift was a transmission drop-and-reseal on a customer rig that had been waiting three weeks for shop time. Job that historically took him a full day on jack stands wrapped inside six hours on the lift. He sent us a photo of the trans on the bench with the shop bay open in the background.

Two months in, he has completed four transmission jobs, seven bumper installs, and dozens of skid-plate fitments. Zero complaints on the equipment. He mentions occasionally that he wishes he had bought this lift five years ago instead of arguing with himself about two-post configurations. That is the case study we tell to every overlanding builder who calls us thinking they need a specific two-post configuration. The right question is not symmetric vs asymmetric.
