Why a Mixed Service Bay Layout Is Harder Than a Single-Purpose Bay

A shop that only services passenger cars can standardize around one lift style, one set of adapters, and one clearance envelope. A mixed service bay layout throws that out the window. You might need enough width and height for a one-ton dually, enough capacity for a loaded box truck, and enough lifting point flexibility for a low sports car with aftermarket ground effects — sometimes all in the same week. Every one of those vehicles has different wheelbases, different frame pickup points, and different overall height once raised.

The mistake we see most often is a shop that buys a mid-capacity two post lift because it seemed like a safe middle ground, only to find out it can’t safely handle the heavier trucks that show up twice a week, or the arms won’t reach the pickup points on a longer wheelbase van. A mixed service bay layout has to be designed around your worst-case vehicle, not your average one, because the average vehicle was never the problem. Planning Ahead for EV Work in a Mixed Bay

Even shops that don’t specialize in EVs are seeing more hybrids and full electric vehicles come through the door, and a mixed service bay layout built today should account for that reality. EVs and hybrids carry battery packs low and wide, often needing specific lifting points and sometimes specialized adapters to avoid contacting the pack. A two post lift with adjustable arms and the right adapter set can usually handle this, but it’s worth confirming before you’re standing over a customer’s new EV trying to improvise. Weight is another factor — EV battery packs add substantial mass low in the vehicle, which shifts the effective lifting requirements even on vehicles that look similar in size to their gas counterparts.
