An east-central Iowa RV and trailer service shop we work with bought their first set of mobile auto lifts about a year ago. The story is worth telling because they went through the overhead-versus-baseplate decision the hard way — they nearly bought a set of two-post overhead lifts before we walked them through why mobile columns fit their shop better. Why they thought they wanted a two-post overhead
The original plan was a pair of heavy-duty two-post overhead lifts in their main shop bay. Overhead two-posts have their place — they are strong, they are familiar, and every tech who has worked in a commercial shop knows how to run one. The owner had used them at previous jobs and defaulted to what he knew. When we did the site walk, though, three problems showed up. First, the bay was not tall enough to run an overhead unit for a Class A motorhome. The overhead crossbar hangs the hydraulics at working height plus vehicle height, and a Class A eats that clearance instantly.
Second, even a wide two-post would not span a triple-axle fifth-wheel — the arms would not reach the vehicle’s lift points cleanly. Third, and this was the biggest one, committing his one tall bay to a permanent two-post meant every other job in that bay had to work around the columns. The overhead vs baseplate framework, honestly

Overhead lifts run the equalizer cables and hydraulic lines through a crossbar at the top of the columns. They are cleaner on the floor, techs walk under them without tripping over anything, and they are the standard for general passenger and light-truck work. The tradeoff: they eat overhead clearance and they do not work in low-ceiling bays or for tall vehicles.
Baseplate lifts run those same cables and lines through a channel at the floor between the columns. You lose a little floor clarity — techs step over the channel — but you gain ceiling clearance. For a low-ceiling shop or a shop that services taller vehicles like ambulances, box trucks, and shuttle buses, baseplate is the right answer. For an RV shop working on motorhomes, though, neither fixed configuration solves the fundamental problem, which is that motorhomes and long trailers do not fit under any two-post. What the first month looked like
They took delivery on a six-column heavy-duty set — fourteen thousand pounds per column, eighty-four thousand pounds total capacity. Enough to lift a Class A motorhome cleanly. We installed on their existing slab after verifying six inches with rebar, calibrated the wireless controller, and load-tested with a diesel pusher that a customer had scheduled for alignment work the following week. The first month, they were slow rolling the columns out and setting them up. Every set-up took them thirty or forty minutes because the techs were double-checking wheel engagements and controller sync.
By week four, setup was down to ten minutes. That is normal. Mobile auto lifts have a learning curve and it is not steep, but it does exist. The techs get faster as they build muscle memory around where the tow handles want to be, how far to spread the columns, and what the controller wants to see before it will lift. The owner told us later that the first alignment job they ran on the columns took them twice as long as they expected — everything after that was faster than the two-post alternative would have been.
How the mobile columns actually changed their workflow
The unexpected benefit was flexibility across bays. On a busy day, they could set up the mobile column set in whichever bay had the tallest vehicle scheduled and use the shorter bays for regular work. That was not something a fixed two-post would have allowed. On a slower day, they parked the columns out of the way and used the main bay for wash work or storage. That kind of workflow flex is what mobile auto lifts are actually selling — it is not the lift itself, it is what the lift being movable does to your bay economics.
The other change: they started taking on alignment work they would have turned away before. Long trailers do not fit alignment racks, but a mobile column set can lift the trailer wheels and hold them at a consistent height, which is enough for the alignment tools to do their work. That opened up a revenue line — customers with long tow rigs who could not get alignment work done anywhere within a few hundred miles — that paid for the column set in the first year.
What broke, what did not, in year one
Nothing structural failed in year one. That is what you should expect from a new set from a mainstream brand. What they did have was a wireless controller board go intermittent around month eight — the controller would sync inconsistently on start-up and occasionally miss one column. We diagnosed it as a bad radio module in the controller, sent them a replacement under warranty, and they were down for about ninety minutes across two service visits. That is what warranty is for, and it is the reason new mobile auto lifts from a distributor with real support are worth the premium over used.
The tow wheels took some wear from a rough section of concrete in one bay — nothing serious, but the shop patched the concrete and it stopped getting worse. The lock heights held perfectly on all four columns. The drive components showed zero play at year-end inspection. What they would do differently
Two things, both minor. First, they wish they had bought the wireless remote add-on that Rotary offers for some sets — the ability to control the columns from a handheld while walking around the vehicle would have saved a lot of trips back to the controller. This can be added after the fact and they may still do it. Second, they wish they had spec’d an extra ninety-inch-tall column adapter for tall RVs — some Class A motorhomes have lift points high enough that the standard column geometry is tight. Nothing about the mobile auto lifts themselves would change. Neither would the decision to skip the fixed two-post. The east-central Iowa RV shop is running more alignment work than they were before, they have not committed a bay to a permanent installation, and their techs have adapted to mobile columns as their primary lift for anything larger than a passenger vehicle. First-year success looks like this: no incidents, no unexpected costs beyond a warranty visit, and revenue growth that the equipment enabled.
