Mobile auto lifts changed what a small tire and alignment shop can do without pouring concrete for a new bay. Why a tire and alignment shop asks about mobile auto lifts
For a wheel-bearing job, a tire rotation, or a hub-runout check, a fixed two-post lift ties up a bay that could be working on trucks the rest of the day. That is the pinch a southwest Iowa tire shop owner hit last winter. He had one bay wide enough for a dually and one two-post bolted to the floor of a different bay. Mobile auto lifts solved the problem in a way a second two-post could not: he could wheel the columns to the wide bay when he had a Duramax up on wheel-off, and roll them back out the next morning when the alignment rack was booked back-to-back. That flexibility is why we sell more mobile auto lifts to tire shops than to any other single trade. When we quote a set, the first question we ask is how many columns you actually need. Four handles most passenger cars and light trucks. Six covers medium-duty trucks. Eight is where a heavy-duty fleet shop lands. Getting that count right on day one saves a freight bill later.
What actually shows up on the freight truck
Mobile auto lifts ship as individual columns, strapped to pallets, on a common carrier LTL flatbed. A set of four columns lands in the 3,200 to 4,000 pound range, split across two or three pallets depending on the manufacturer. Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak each crate slightly differently, but the pattern is the same: one column per pallet, sometimes two smaller columns wrapped together, plus a separate accessory crate with the charger, adapters, and fork sleeves. The freight driver will call ahead the morning of delivery. He is not going to help unload — that is a hard rule from every LTL carrier we have used. If your dock is at a normal 48-inch height, you can pull the pallets straight off with a pallet jack. If you do not have a dock, and most rural Iowa tire shops do not, you need a forklift on-site the moment the truck pulls up. The freight bill will note lift-gate service only if you paid for it up front. Ask before delivery day. Assume nothing.
Forklift capacity and where to stage the crates
A single mobile-column crate can push 1,000 pounds. A forklift rated at 3,000 pounds and up handles them comfortably. What we see go wrong is not capacity — it is the operator running out of clearance to lift the pallet off a low-deck trailer. The forks need to reach 48 inches deep to hook the pallet cleanly. If your forklift is a shorter Class III with 42-inch forks, use fork extensions, or ask the driver to stage the pallets at the trailer edge before he cuts the straps. Stage the columns inside the shop, out of the weather, near the bay where they will spend most of their working life. Do not stack them. Do not park them somewhere a customer can back into them. We have replaced a control panel that a distracted delivery driver clipped with a bumper. It is one of the more expensive uncrating stories we tell customers when they ask why we push staging so hard. Uncrating without wrecking the column or your back
Every mobile auto lifts column ships with its own tow handles and spring-loaded wheels folded against the frame. That is the first thing you deploy. Cut the shrink wrap, remove the top corner blocks, and unbolt the column from the pallet using the four bolts at the base. Use two people, not one — the column tips easier than you expect once the base bolts come out. Once the wheels are dropped, one person can tow it. The tow handle is not a fifth wheel on a semi. Move slowly across expansion joints and floor drains, because a wheel dropping into a half-inch gap under 900 pounds of column has ruined more than one caster. Keep the accessory crate closed until the columns are staged. Pull the charger, network cables, and fork adapters out last. Every kit ships with a getting-started sheet. Read it before you power anything up. Skipping that step is how a technician resets factory pairing and calls us Monday morning with a set of columns that will not sync.
First power-up: charging, syncing, and a dry run
Modern mobile auto lifts ship with the batteries at a partial charge. The manufacturer wants you to top off before first use — plug each column into a standard 20-amp 120-volt outlet for four to eight hours. That is your Friday-afternoon job the day the truck arrives. Sync the columns Saturday morning. Wireless syncing has replaced the old daisy-chain cables on newer units, but the pairing sequence still matters. Turn each column on in the order the manual specifies, watch the master unit, and confirm the network light on every slave column. Once they are talking, do a dry run. Extend the forks, cycle up two feet, engage a lock, and drop back down. Do this without a vehicle on the forks. The point of the dry cycle is to catch a bad limit switch or shipping-damaged sensor before there is a Ford Super Duty balanced on the set. We ask every new customer to send us a short video of the dry cycle. It takes ten minutes and it has caught two dead-on-arrival units for us this year.
Wheel bearing work is the ideal first real job
For a tire shop, wheel bearing service is the ideal first real job on a new set of mobile auto lifts. It is wheel-off work, so the forks are loaded with the vehicle only, not with rotating drivetrain. It exercises the locks — you will click into a lock about every two and a half inches of rise, and you want the tech to feel every one of those locks engage before he starts pulling hubs. It puts the crew in the habit of positioning the columns wide enough that a passenger-side jack stand can go under the frame rail as a secondary support. That habit matters. We tell every customer the same thing: even a rated, ALI-certified column set does not replace a second point of support for anyone lying under the vehicle. Wheel bearings, brake lines, exhaust hangers — anything that puts a body under the truck — gets a jack stand under a hard point. The southwest Iowa tire shop that inspired this article ran a full pinion-bearing job on day two and never looked back.
Ongoing safety, floor condition, and when to call us
Mobile auto lifts live and die on floor condition. Concrete needs to be four inches minimum, 3,000 PSI, level within a quarter-inch across the vehicle footprint. Asphalt, gravel, epoxy over cracked slab — those are the calls we get in December when a column will not lock properly and someone wants to know why. Once a week, walk each column. Check tire condition on the drive wheels, check hydraulic hose routing, and check that the tow handle latches. Once a month, verify all four locks engage under load and log it. Once a year, we come out for a paid inspection and hose replacement review. The ALI recommended service interval is annual for any lift used commercially, and mobile auto lifts are no exception.
