A solid mobile column delivery checklist is the difference between a set of columns that goes to work the same afternoon and a pallet of expensive aluminum sitting in a shop corner for three weeks waiting on a missing charger, a cracked handset, or a freight claim nobody filed in time. Before the Truck Shows Up: Confirm the Site, Not Just the Order

Most delivery-day disasters are actually site problems that got discovered late. Two or three days before the freight arrives, we want to know exactly where the truck is backing in, whether there is a dock or the driver needs a liftgate, and whether the person receiving has authority to sign a delivery receipt with exceptions noted. A set of four columns on a pallet is heavy, awkward freight — this is not a UPS box somebody can wrestle off a tailgate. If the shop has no forklift, that gets settled before the shipment leaves, not while a driver idles in the lot on the clock.

The other half of pre-delivery is the floor. Mobile columns transfer enormous point loads through small caster and base footprints, so we confirm slab thickness and condition, look for expansion joints or floor drains in the working bay, and make sure there is a clean, level path from the storage wall to where the trucks park. Cracked or spalling concrete near a floor drain is the single most common reason we have to change a plan on site. We also verify incoming power for the charger circuit or the machine’s supply voltage, because a 208V three-phase set does no good in a shop with single-phase 240 only. Getting those answers in writing is step one of any honest mobile column delivery checklist.

Freight Inspection: Sign Nothing Until You Have Walked the Pallet

When the truck arrives, the clock on your freight claim rights starts running. We photograph the pallet on the trailer before anything comes off, then again on the ground. We look for crushed corners, shifted banding, punctured shrink wrap, forklift strikes on column bases, and any staining that suggests hydraulic fluid escaped in transit. Carriages and lifting forks get a close look because they are the parts most likely to take a hit from a careless forklift operator two terminals back.

If anything looks wrong, it gets written on the bill of lading before the driver leaves — specific language, not “possible damage.” A note like “left rear column base bent, shrink wrap torn, photos taken” is worth real money later; a clean signature is worth nothing. Concealed damage claims are technically allowed by most carriers within a short window, but they are a fight, and we would rather not have it. Once the pallet is inside, we uncrate every column individually and set them upright on a flat area so we can compare them side by side. Bent forks, gouged mast rails, and scuffed cylinders show up fast when four columns are standing next to each other. Parts Count: Every Handset, Charger, Cable, and Adapter

Inventory against the packing list, item by item, out loud with a second person writing. Column sets ship with more loose accessories than people expect: control handset or master column keypad, battery chargers, interconnect cables on cabled systems, fork adapters or extensions for wide and narrow wheel arrangements, wheel-lift saddles on some models, manuals, and the certification paperwork. On wireless sets, confirm each column’s radio ID is present and legible, because pairing four columns that all report as “unknown” is a service call nobody enjoys.

We also want the battery information right away. Many mobile column lifts arrive with batteries at partial charge from the factory or with the batteries shipped dry and separate for freight reasons. If they need charging, they go on charge the moment the columns are upright — not after lunch. Twelve to sixteen hours is common for a full initial charge, and trying to run a first lift on half-charged batteries is a great way to convince a shop the new equipment is defective when it is not. Missing or damaged accessories get reported to us the same day so replacements ship immediately. That single habit has saved more Iowa shops a week of downtime than any other line on the list.

Documentation, Serial Numbers, and Warranty Registration

Serial numbers are boring right up until you need a part. We record every column’s serial number, model number, and manufacture date on one sheet, photograph the data plates, and store both digitally and in the shop’s paper file. When somebody calls us two years later needing a lifting carriage roller or a specific hydraulic pump, the serial tells us which revision the column is and whether the part changed mid-production. Without it, we are guessing, and guessing means shipping the wrong part.

Warranty registration goes in the same session. Most manufacturers want the equipment registered within a set window from delivery, and shops that put it off often lose coverage they paid for. We register on the spot, note the date, and file the confirmation with the serial sheet. The operator manual, the ALI certification documentation, and the load capacity charts all get put somewhere the technicians will actually find them — a binder mounted near the columns beats a drawer in the office manager’s desk every time. If your shop is subject to insurance inspections or OSHA walkthroughs, having that documentation together at delivery instead of assembling it in a panic later is worth the twenty minutes. Setup, Sync, and the First Test Lift

With columns upright, charged, and inventoried, setup begins. Cabled systems get their interconnect cables routed so nobody drives over them; wireless systems get paired and the master column identified. We check hydraulic fluid levels in each column, cycle each one individually through its full travel unloaded, and listen. A column that groans or hesitates on the way up is telling you something on day one that will be a leak on day ninety. Mechanical safety locks get engaged and released at multiple heights on every column, and we confirm the lowering interlock works as designed.

The first loaded lift happens with a known, well-centered vehicle — a straight truck or a bus the shop knows the weight of, not the heaviest thing on the lot. We lift a few inches, stop, and walk all four columns looking at fork engagement and tire contact. Then we go to working height, set the locks, and check that all four columns are within tolerance of each other. Any column drifting or lagging gets flagged before the equipment goes into service. Training the Crew on Day One, Not Next Month

Equipment that nobody was properly trained on is a liability with a warranty. We spend real time with whoever is going to run the columns: how to position forks for different wheel sizes, why the columns must be squared to the vehicle, what the sync tolerance warning means, how to recover from a fault, and where the emergency stop is on each unit. We also make sure someone knows the load math. Four columns rated at 18,000 pounds each is not a blanket permission slip; capacity per column, axle weight distribution, and fork positioning all matter, and a rear-heavy bus or a loaded service truck can put more on two columns than people assume. Handoff: Storage, First Service Interval, and Who to Call
