Running an EV specialty shop in central Iowa means rethinking a lot of assumptions from the gas-engine world, and a mobile column lift is no exception. We’ve had more than one EV shop owner tell us they nearly skipped mobile columns entirely because of something they read online or heard from another shop — and most of it turned out to be wrong or outdated. Between battery pack weight, CV axle and half-shaft work that requires precise access, and questions about what the equipment is even worth down the road, there’s a lot of noise. Myth 1: Mobile Columns Can’t Handle EV Weight

This is the one we hear most, and it’s simply outdated. Early EVs and hybrids caused hesitation because of added battery mass, but the mobile column lift market responded years ago. Medium-duty sets rated around 20,000 lbs per column, and heavy-duty sets well beyond that, are common now precisely because commercial trucks, ag equipment, and heavier passenger vehicles — including EVs — needed the capacity. A set of four columns at that rating gives you well over 70,000 lbs of combined capacity, which comfortably covers any EV sedan, crossover, or truck on the road today, including full-size electric pickups.

The real question isn’t whether a mobile column lift can handle EV weight, it’s whether you bought the right capacity for your specific fleet. A shop servicing lightweight EV hatchbacks has different needs than one working on electric half-ton trucks. Undersizing out of habit from ICE-era assumptions is the actual mistake, not the equipment itself.

Myth 2: CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work Needs a Pit or Fixed Lift

Some shop owners assume you need a traditional in-ground or two-post lift with full wheel-off clearance to properly access CV axles and half-shafts. In practice, mobile columns do this job well because of their incremental height adjustability — most units lock in stages roughly every two to two and a half inches rather than forcing you to choose between fully down or fully up. That lets a technician set the vehicle at the exact working height for a half-shaft pull without straining to reach or working at an awkward angle.

For EV-specific half-shaft and CV axle jobs, where you’re often also managing high-voltage cable routing and heavier hub assemblies, that adjustability is arguably more useful than raw lift height. Being able to fine-tune the working position column by column, rather than being locked into one fixed height, is exactly the kind of flexibility a busy EV bay needs when jobs vary from a light sedan half-shaft to a heavier crossover CV joint in the same afternoon.

Myth 3: Mobile Columns Lose Resale Value Faster Than Fixed Lifts

This one gets repeated a lot without much behind it. In reality, mobile column lifts hold value well specifically because they’re not tied to one building. A fixed two-post or four-post lift is essentially immobile equipment — if you sell the shop, it often stays with the building or gets sold at a steep discount because removal and reinstallation is expensive. Mobile columns, by contrast, can move with you to a new location, get resold as a complete set to another shop, or get repurposed for a different bay layout entirely.

We’ve seen well-maintained mobile column sets change hands between Iowa shops for a meaningful percentage of original cost even after years of service, especially from trusted commercial brands. The equipment that tends to lose value fast is neglected equipment — units with worn cables, out-of-sync columns, or skipped inspections — not the mobile column category itself. Buyers doing due diligence check service records, not just the model name.

Myth 4: Maintenance Costs Erase the Savings vs a Fixed Lift

It’s true that a mobile column lift has moving parts a baseplate-only fixed lift doesn’t: casters, communication cables or wireless sync systems, and columns that need to stay calibrated to each other. Some shop owners hear “more moving parts” and assume that means expensive, constant maintenance. In practice, routine service is straightforward and predictable when it’s done on schedule — the same way any lift needs inspection regardless of type.

We’ve picked up service calls on mobile column sets, including ones with multiple columns not lifting or responding correctly, and in most cases the root cause was deferred basic maintenance, not some inherent flaw in the mobile column design. A flat-rate inspection and service visit on a schedule catches worn cables or sync issues long before they turn into a unit that won’t lift at all. Skipping that is what actually erases the savings, not the mobile column lift itself.

Myth 5: You Need Overhead Clearance or Special Flooring to Run Them

Baseplate mobile column configurations run on any solid, reasonably level concrete floor rated for the load — no pit, no dedicated overhead beam required in most setups. That makes them a strong fit for EV shops operating out of retrofitted buildings in central Iowa that weren’t originally built as service bays. You don’t need to pour new footings or reinforce ceiling trusses the way you might for some fixed-lift installations.

Where shops do run into trouble is skipping the floor evaluation entirely and assuming any slab will do. Older concrete, especially in converted retail or warehouse spaces some EV specialty shops move into, should still get checked for thickness and condition before a heavier mobile column lift set goes on it. That’s a quick site visit, not a construction project, but it’s a step that gets skipped more than it should.

What Actually Matters When Buying for an EV Bay

Strip away the myths and the real buying criteria for an EV shop are straightforward: match column capacity to your actual vehicle weight range including battery mass, confirm the incremental height adjustability works for the specific service work you do most, verify your floor can handle the point loading, and commit to a real maintenance schedule instead of a run-it-till-it-breaks approach. None of that is unique to EV work, but EV shops feel the consequences of getting it wrong faster because of how often CV axle and half-shaft jobs come through the door.

A mobile column lift bought with the right capacity and maintained on schedule is one of the better long-term investments a central Iowa EV shop can make, both for daily throughput and for what the equipment is worth if you ever sell or relocate.
