What a set of mobile columns actually is
A mobile column lift is a self-contained hydraulic post on a wheeled base. Each column has its own pump, motor, and carriage, and the columns talk to each other through a control system so they rise and fall together. You roll them into position, set the forks under the axle at the tire, and lift the whole vehicle at four points instead of two frame contact points. Sets come in pairs — two columns for a single axle, four columns for most trucks and buses, six or eight for articulated equipment and long fire apparatus. Per-column capacities in the range we sell run roughly 13,000 lb up through 19,000 lb, which puts a four-column set somewhere between 52,000 and 76,000 lb total.
The reason fleets like them is flexibility. One set covers a pickup on Monday and a tandem-axle dump truck on Wednesday, then rolls into the corner when you need the bay floor for a paint booth or a body job. Nothing is anchored, nothing is buried, and nothing stops you from moving the whole operation to a different building next year. The tradeoff is setup time — you are handling four columns and positioning forks every single time instead of just pulling arms out from a post. For a shop that lifts heavy trucks a few times a day, that tradeoff is worth it. For a shop lifting the same three vans all day, it usually is not.
Sizing capacity by your heaviest unit, not your average one
The single most common mistake we see is buying to the average vehicle. Capacity gets rated per column and the load is not evenly split — a truck with a plow or a boom sits heavy on the front, a loaded service body sits heavy on the rear, and a fire truck with a full tank is heavy everywhere. Take gross vehicle weight rating, not curb weight, and divide by the number of columns you plan to use. Then add margin. If the number lands close to a column’s rating, step up a size. We have never once had a customer tell us they regretted buying more capacity than they needed, and we have had plenty tell us the opposite.
Also think about the vehicles you do not own yet. Fleets get heavier. An Iowa county shop we work with bought a four-column set sized for their tandem plow trucks, then took delivery of a heavier chassis two years later and had to add columns to the set. That is doable with most brands if the control system supports expansion, but it is cheaper to buy right the first time. Wheel diameter matters too — the forks have to reach under the tire and clear the sidewall, so oversized flotation tires or duals on wide spacing can limit which fork geometry works. Power: shop air, single-phase, or three-phase
Every column needs electricity, and this is where installs get complicated in older Iowa buildings. Most heavy sets are three-phase, either 208-240V or 480V, and each column draws its own load. If your building has single-phase service only, you have three options: buy a single-phase-capable set at a lower capacity tier, add a phase converter, or bring in three-phase service from the utility. We have quoted all three. Phase converters work fine for lift duty, but they add cost and a maintenance item. Battery-powered columns exist and have improved a lot, and for shops that lift outdoors or in a building with no realistic power drop, they are the clear answer.
The cord question matters just as much as the voltage. Cabled sets run communication and sometimes power between columns through heavy jumper cables that lie on the floor. They work, they are cheaper, and they get run over, kinked, and eventually damaged. Wireless sets eliminate the trip hazard and cut setup time noticeably — you set the columns, sync them, and lift. Batteries and charging become the thing you manage instead of cables. Floor and slab requirements nobody checks first
Mobile columns are not anchored, but they still concentrate enormous load into a small footprint. Each base transfers its share of the vehicle weight through the wheels and pads into your slab. Manufacturers publish minimum slab thickness and PSI — typically in the 4 to 6 inch range at 3,000 PSI or better, depending on capacity. Old shop floors in Iowa farm buildings and 1960s municipal garages are frequently thinner than that, cracked, or poured over questionable base material. We core-test when there is any doubt. A slab failure under a loaded fire truck is not a warranty conversation you want to have.
Flatness is the other half. Because the columns are independent, a floor that slopes toward a drain will have one column lifting at a slightly different angle than another. Good control systems handle small variation, but severe slope or heaves will cause synchronization faults and uneven fork loading. Expansion joints and trench drains are also obstacles — you cannot park a column base straddling a joint and expect the load path to behave. In practice we walk the floor with the customer, mark where columns can and cannot sit, and sometimes recommend grinding a few high spots. That hour of prep prevents a year of nuisance faults. Brand and control system differences that matter
We sell and service Rotary and Challenger on the commercial side, with Challenger PKS units covering the heavier end. The columns themselves are all doing similar hydraulic work; the meaningful differences are in the control system, the fork design, and how repairable things are in five years. What to ask about any set: how does it handle a column that drops out of sync, can you run a subset of columns independently, how are the controls protected from wash-down and salt, and what does it take to replace a pump or a valve block in the field. Salt is a real factor in Iowa — columns live on floors that see brine all winter, and a control box with poor sealing will corrode. Ask about fork options too. Standard forks fit most truck tires, but low-profile and extended-reach forks solve specific problems that come up more often than you would expect. Owning a set: maintenance, inspection, and real costs
Pricing runs in tiers rather than a single number. A two-column set at the lighter capacity end is a mid-five-figure purchase; a four-column heavy set with wireless controls lands substantially higher, and six- or eight-column configurations for fire apparatus go up from there. Freight is real money on this equipment — these ship on a truck as heavy freight, and you need a forklift or a dock to receive them. Budget for a compliant power drop if you need one, and for annual inspection.
Maintenance is straightforward but not optional. Grease the carriage slides and inspect the lifting chains or screws per the manufacturer interval, check hydraulic fluid level and condition, keep the battery terminals clean on wireless units, and inspect the wheels and casters — they take abuse and a seized caster makes positioning miserable. ALI certification requires annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and for municipal and school fleets that documentation is usually mandatory, not optional. The columns themselves last a very long time when they are maintained; what fails is seals, batteries, casters, and controls. Plan for those and a set will serve a fleet shop for two decades.
When mobile columns are the wrong answer
We will talk people out of these regularly, and an honest mobile column lift guide has to include that. If your heaviest vehicle is a three-quarter-ton pickup and you have a bay with good concrete, a two-post is faster, cheaper, and less to manage. If you do alignments, mobile columns are not the tool — you want a scissor alignment rack or a four-post with a rolling jack. If your shop floor is compromised and you cannot fix it, columns will not save you the way people hope; the load still has to go somewhere.
Where they win is mixed heavy fleets, buildings you do not own or cannot cut, outdoor and field service work, and shops that need the floor space back between jobs. School districts, county road departments, fire departments, trailer shops, and truck body builders are our typical buyers, and they almost never regret it.
