Why Fleet Work Breaks Fixed Lifts

A fixed two-post lift is a compromise machine. It has one set of arms, one spread, one capacity rating, and one location on your floor. That works beautifully in a shop that services passenger cars and light trucks all day. It falls apart the moment your fleet includes a 26-foot straight truck, a bucket truck with a rear-mounted boom, or a bus. The arms will not reach the frame, the overhead structure is in the way, and the capacity is not there even if the geometry worked.

Fleet shops also deal with vehicles that come in bunched up. A county garage might have four plow trucks scheduled the same week in October and then almost nothing heavy until spring. Dedicating a permanent bay and a permanent concrete pour to that seasonal load is expensive. If you run articulated equipment, buses, or anything that needs a third axle supported, plan for a six-column set from the start rather than buying four and hoping. Adding two matched columns later is possible with most Rotary and Challenger systems, but only if the control architecture supports expansion — some older wired sets do not. Wireless Versus Wired Control Systems

Ten years ago we still installed a fair number of cabled column sets. Today we install wireless almost exclusively, and for fleet work it is not close. Cables get run over, pinched under column bases, and dragged through the salt slush that every Iowa fleet shop deals with from November through March. A damaged control cable takes a set out of service until the replacement arrives.

Wireless sets communicate column to column and let you run any pair, any three, or all four or six from a single keypad. That matters for fleet techs who are constantly repositioning for different wheelbases. The tradeoff is battery management — the onboard batteries need charging discipline, and a set that sits unused for three months in an unheated building will not be ready when the plow truck comes in. Floor Requirements and Iowa Concrete Reality

This is where a lot of quotes get uncomfortable. Column sets do not bolt down, which fleet managers love, but they concentrate enormous point loads through four or six small footprints. Manufacturer specs typically call for a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength — often four to six inches at 3,000 PSI or better, depending on capacity. Plenty of older Iowa shop floors, especially in buildings that started life as a grain shed or an implement barn, do not meet that.

We core-test when there is any doubt. It costs a fraction of what a cracked slab costs, and it is the single most useful hour we spend on a fleet installation. We also look at floor flatness, because columns need to sit level to lift level, and a floor that slopes to a drain will fight you. Sometimes the fix is a small pour of reinforced pad in the designated lift area rather than a whole new slab — that keeps the flexibility while giving the columns the support they need. What Mobile Column Lifts for Fleet Shops Cost to Own

We do not quote exact numbers in writing because capacity, column count, and freight move the figure too much. Broadly: a four-column set in the light-to-mid fleet range sits in the same neighborhood as two good commercial two-post lifts installed, and heavy-duty six-column sets step up substantially from there. Freight on a set of columns is real money — they are heavy and they ship on a truck that needs a dock or a forklift.

Ongoing cost is where columns actually look good. There is no concrete anchor to inspect, no overhead assembly to fail, and the wear items are predictable: hydraulic seals, carriage slide blocks, batteries, and forks. Annual inspection is required under ANSI/ALI standards regardless of lift type, and we perform those across Iowa. Budget for one inspection per year, seal service every few years depending on duty cycle, and battery replacement on a three-to-five-year cadence. Over a fifteen-year service life, a well-maintained set typically costs less in downtime than a comparable investment in fixed lifts spread across multiple bays — mostly because when one column needs service, you can often keep working with the remaining columns on lighter vehicles.

Storage, Movement, and Shop Layout

Every fleet shop we visit underestimates the storage footprint. Four columns parked against a wall eat real square footage, and they need to be somewhere a tech can grab them without moving three tool carts first. We plan a dedicated parking spot during the site walk, ideally near the charging outlets and on the same side of the shop as the heavy bay.

Movement matters too. Most sets move on integrated wheels with a manual jack or a powered drive, and the difference in tech fatigue is significant. On a smooth epoxy floor, manual movement is fine. On a rough, patched, forty-year-old slab with expansion joints, powered movement pays for itself in six months of not fighting the equipment. We also think about door widths, column height versus low ceiling obstructions like radiant tube heaters, and whether the columns will clear the vehicle when it is fully raised.
