Twenty years ago every column set was hard-cabled together, with a communication cable running from column to column and a power cord to each one. Plenty of those sets are still running in Iowa shops today, and honestly they’re reliable. The downside is obvious: cables on the floor get run over, pinched under tires, and eventually crushed. Replacing a comm cable isn’t expensive but it’s downtime.
