When an RV and trailer service shop in east-central Iowa decided to add alignment work to its service menu, the equipment question wasn’t whether to get a mobile single column car lift — it was how many columns, what arm style, and whether the shop’s mixed fleet of tow vehicles and daily-driver customer cars could all run through the same setup. Why an RV Shop Chose Columns Over a Fixed Rack

The shop’s existing bays were built around towable RVs and trailers, not passenger cars, which meant a traditional in-ground alignment rack wasn’t a realistic retrofit without tearing up a slab that already had drains and tie-downs built into it. A mobile single column car lift solved that problem because it doesn’t need a pit or fixed footprint — the columns could roll into whichever bay had space that day and roll back out when a trailer needed the floor.

The other deciding factor was vehicle mix. The Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arm Decision

This is the choice the shop almost breezed past during the sales process, and it’s the one that ended up shaping how smoothly their first few months went. Symmetric arms extend the same distance on both sides of the column, which works well for lifting at true axle centerlines — the kind of lift point most passenger cars and many trucks are built around. Asymmetric arms extend farther on one side than the other, designed to lift at an offset point that gives techs better door and rocker panel clearance once the vehicle is up.

For alignment work specifically, symmetric arms tend to be the safer default because alignment lift points are almost always centered on the axle, and an offset arm risks putting pressure somewhere the frame or subframe wasn’t designed to take repeated loading. This shop ended up choosing symmetric arms for their primary column set specifically because alignment work was the driving use case, and they didn’t want techs improvising lift points on unfamiliar tow vehicles. They kept a secondary asymmetric-capable set for general service work where door clearance actually matters more than centerline precision. Having both options available, rather than assuming one arm style covers every job, is the detail we now walk every shop through before they commit to a set.

Install Day: What Actually Happened

The install itself took less than a day once the columns arrived, which surprised the shop’s staff given how much research had gone into the decision beforehand. Because a mobile single column car lift doesn’t require in-ground cabling or compressed air runs, most of install day was spent on charging setup, calibrating the sync communication between columns, and walking the team through the safety-cam locking increments rather than any structural floor work.

Their first actual alignment customer came in about a week after install — a half-ton pickup that had been pulling a travel trailer all summer and was pulling slightly to one side. The tech used the symmetric arm set, lifted the front axle to working height, and immediately appreciated something the sales process hadn’t fully conveyed: the ability to lock the column at a mid-height increment rather than only full-up or full-down.

That mid-height lock let the tech work at a comfortable angle without the vehicle towering overhead unnecessarily, and it made turning the wheels lock-to-lock for the alignment check noticeably easier than the shop’s old approach of jacking one corner at a time. The owner told us afterward that this one job justified the arm-style research more than any spec sheet had, because watching it work in real conditions made the symmetric choice obvious in a way that reading about it hadn’t.

Capacity Realities With a Mixed Fleet

A shop mixing RVs, trailers, and passenger tow vehicles has to think about capacity differently than a single-vehicle-type shop does. This shop sized their column set to their heaviest routine tow vehicle rather than their average customer car, which meant paying for more capacity than a typical sedan-only alignment bay would need. It was the right call — a mobile single column car lift sized too small for the heaviest vehicle in rotation becomes a liability the first time someone forgets and drives the wrong truck onto it.
