We’ve walked into brand-new shops in Iowa where the bays looked great on paper but a technician can’t open a door all the way, or a 2 post lift’s arms swing into the next bay’s workspace. Why Multi Bay Shop Planning Starts With the Lift, Not the Building

Most shop owners start with square footage and a wish list of bays, then try to shoehorn lifts into whatever space is left. That’s backwards. Multi bay shop planning works better when you pick your lift types first — 2 post, 4 post, alignment, scissor — and let those footprints, including full arm swing and column clearance, drive the column spacing and door placement. A 10,000 lb 2 post lift needs real clearance on both sides for arm swing and for a technician to walk around a raised vehicle safely, and that number is bigger than most people assume until they’ve watched a truck door hit a support column.

We always ask clients what they’re actually going to be doing in each bay five years from now, not just today. A shop that starts as general repair often adds alignments, tire service, or heavy truck work later, and retrofitting a lift into a bay that was never planned for it is far more expensive than building it in from day one. Good multi bay shop planning treats each bay as a specific-purpose station: one for alignments with runways or drive-through pits, one or two for general lift work, maybe a 4 post or in-ground for long-term storage or detail work. That specificity is what separates a shop that flows well from one where techs are constantly working around each other.

Bay Spacing and Column Clearance

The single most common regret we hear from Iowa shop owners is bay spacing that’s too tight. Industry rule of thumb is a minimum of 12 feet of clear width per bay for general repair work, and closer to 14 feet if you’re running 2 post lifts with wide arm reach or working on full-size trucks and vans. Ceiling height matters just as much — you need enough overhead clearance for the vehicle at full lift height plus the lift’s own mechanism, and that number changes significantly between a 9-foot and a 12-foot lift.

Column placement for 2 post lifts needs its own conversation during multi bay shop planning, because the columns themselves eat into your usable width, and asymmetric arm lifts need offset positioning that a lot of contractors don’t account for on the blueprint. We’ve corrected more than one situation where a shop was framed with columns dead-center in what should have been the walking lane. If you’re planning multiple 2 post bays side by side, stagger or offset the columns based on actual arm swing radius, not a generic spec sheet number, because floor thickness, anchoring, and adjacent equipment all affect real-world clearance.

Matching Lift Types to Bay Function

Not every bay in a multi-bay shop should have the same lift. General repair bays do well with 2 post lifts for speed and access underneath the vehicle. Alignment bays need 4 post or in-ground alignment-ready lifts with turn plates and long enough runways to get an accurate reading. If you do tire work at volume, a lower-profile lift or dedicated tire changer station keeps that traffic separate from your heavier repair bays.

Storage or overflow bays are a good place for 4 post lifts, since vehicles can sit safely for weeks without tying up a working bay. We also see shops add a mobile column lift setup for heavy trucks or equipment that doesn’t fit standard bay dimensions — those columns can move between bays as needed instead of dedicating a whole bay to oversized vehicles. Getting this mix right during multi bay shop planning means you’re not paying for lift capacity you don’t use in bays where you don’t need it, and you’re not stuck improvising when a customer brings in something bigger than expected.

Air, Electrical, and Hydraulic Runs

Every lift needs power, and most need compressed air for lock release or accessories. Planning those runs during the design phase, rather than trenching concrete later, saves real money. We recommend running conduit and air lines to every planned lift location even if you’re not installing all lifts on day one — it’s far cheaper to cap an unused line than to cut a new one into a finished floor two years from now.

Electrical load is another spot where multi bay shop planning gets overlooked. Multiple lifts running simultaneously, plus welders, compressors, and lighting, can overload a panel that looked adequate on paper. Talk to your electrician about simultaneous-use scenarios, not just per-unit draw, before you finalize panel size.

Traffic Flow and Vehicle Movement

How vehicles enter, move through, and exit your shop matters as much as the lifts themselves. Drive-through bays save enormous time compared to back-in-only layouts, especially for alignment and general service work where you don’t want to back a lowered vehicle out around other cars. Door placement, apron width, and the turning radius for the largest vehicle you expect to service should all factor into your bay count and orientation.

Planning for Growth

A lot of shops we work with add bays or upgrade lifts within a few years of opening. Building in extra utility capacity, leaving a bay unfinished but wired, or choosing a building shell that allows for future expansion pays off. Multi bay shop planning that only accounts for today’s volume tends to get expensive to modify later.
