A good oil change bay setup is the difference between a tech doing eight cars a day or fifteen. If you’re planning a new bay or fixing one that’s never worked right, the equipment layout matters just as much as the lift itself. Picking the Right Lift for the Job

The single biggest decision in any oil change bay setup is the lift itself, and it’s not a one-size-fits-all answer. A low-rise drive-on lift or a rolling bridge jack gets a tech under the vehicle in seconds with no wheel-clearance fumbling, which matters when volume is the whole business model. For shops doing broader service work alongside oil changes — tires, brakes, suspension — a full-rise scissor lift or a 2 post gives techs room to work standing up rather than hunched over a pan.

We’ve set up bays both ways and the right call depends on your mix of work. A dedicated quick-lube operation with dozens of cars a day usually does better with drive-on or low-profile lifts because there’s no arm positioning, no swing time — just drive up, raise, drain, lower, done. A general repair shop that treats oil changes as one line item among many is usually better served by a lift that also handles heavier jobs, so you’re not paying for two pieces of equipment doing overlapping work. Either way, the lift needs to get the pan and filter into comfortable reach without forcing the tech to crawl or reach overhead, and it needs a rise height that clears your tallest vehicle mix, including the pickups and SUVs that make up a big share of Iowa’s fleet.

Where the Drain and Filter Access Actually Go

An oil change bay setup lives or dies on how close the drain point and filter access are to where the tech is standing. If the lift puts the pan six feet from the collection tank, you’re wasting motion on every single car, and multiply that by dozens of vehicles a day and it adds up to real lost time. We always walk the floor plan before quoting equipment, because the lift’s footprint has to line up with your fluid collection system, waste oil tank, and filter crush or drain-back setup — not fight against it.

Overhead reels for fresh oil and air lines should hang directly above the work zone, not off to the side where a tech has to stretch a hose across the bay. If you’re running a pit-style setup instead of a lift, drainage and lighting inside the pit need to be planned from day one, because retrofitting a pit’s drainage after the concrete is poured is a miserable, expensive fix. We’ve been called in more than once to help a shop rework a bay because the original layout put the drain on the wrong side of the lift entirely.

Traffic Flow Through the Bay

One-way traffic flow through an oil change bay setup keeps cars moving and keeps techs from backing into each other’s work zones. The best bays we’ve built have a clear drive-in lane, a clear drive-out lane, and enough clearance around the lift that a second tech can grab a filter or top off washer fluid without squeezing past a raised vehicle. If your current bay forces cars to back out the way they came in, you’re losing time and adding risk every single cycle.

Multi-bay shops should think about how techs move between bays too. If oil, filters, and fluids are stocked at one end of the shop and the lifts are at the other, that’s dead walking time built into every job. We generally recommend centralizing consumables near the bays that do the highest oil-change volume, and reserving farther storage for parts used less often.

Lighting and Visibility Under the Vehicle

Poor lighting is an underrated flaw in a lot of oil change bay setups we’ve inspected. A tech working under a raised vehicle needs enough light to spot a stripped drain plug, a leaking gasket, or a loose skid plate bolt without relying on a headlamp or phone flashlight. LED strip lighting mounted to the lift arms or overhead, aimed at the undercarriage zone, pays for itself the first time it catches a problem before it becomes a comeback.

Air, Electric, and Fluid Reel Placement

Every oil change bay setup needs air tools for a torque wrench on the drain plug and filter housing, plus power for lighting and diagnostic tools if the bay doubles as a check-engine or tire-pressure station. Reels mounted from an overhead grid keep cords and hoses off the floor, which matters for both safety and speed — a tech tripping over a hose loses seconds and risks an injury claim. We plan reel drops as part of the lift installation, not as an afterthought.

Concrete, Anchoring, and Floor Prep

Any lift in an oil change bay setup needs concrete that meets the manufacturer’s thickness and cure specs, and this is where we see the most Iowa shops cut corners without realizing it. Freeze-thaw cycles and older slabs common in Iowa buildings sometimes need reinforcement before a lift goes in. We test the slab before we install anything, because a lift anchored into inadequate concrete is a liability nobody wants to discover during an inspection.
