A pole barn lift install is one of the most common calls we get at our Ames, Iowa shop, and it is also the one where the outcome is decided months before anyone shows up with a torque wrench. Somebody puts up a 40×60 post-frame building outside Nevada or Boone, pours a slab thick enough to park on, and then finds out the concrete is four inches of unreinforced mud over loose fill and the trusses sit at eleven feet six. We have installed lifts in hundreds of Iowa pole barns, from hobby garages to full-blown commercial service bays, and the buildings that work all have a few things in common. Here is what we look at, in the order it matters, and what we can do when the building is already up.

The Slab Decides Everything Else

Before we talk brands or capacities, we want to know what is under the lift. Most two-post lifts in the 10,000 lb class call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of manufacturers now want four and a quarter or more for the taller-column models. That sounds easy until you core-drill a pole barn floor and find three and a half inches of concrete poured on fill dirt that never got compacted, with control joints running right where the driver-side column wants to sit. That is not a theoretical problem. We have pulled anchors out of Iowa barn slabs by hand.

If your building is already standing, the fix is usually a cut-and-pour footing pad: we saw out a section under each column, dig down, and pour a properly reinforced pad tied to the existing slab. It adds a day and a cure window to the project, but it is far cheaper than a column that walks under load. If your building is still on paper, tell your concrete contractor you are planning a lift and get six inches with rebar in the bays where the equipment is going. Ceiling Height and the Truss Problem You Cannot See From the Driveway

Post-frame buildings are advertised by sidewall height, and that number is almost never your usable height. A 14-foot sidewall barn with scissor trusses and a purlin run can easily give you twelve feet of clear space at the peak and less near the walls. A standard clearfloor two-post lift needs roughly twelve feet to the overhead beam, plus whatever the tallest vehicle you plan to raise adds above that. Baseplate models move the crossover to the floor and buy you back a couple of feet, which is why so many Iowa barns end up with baseplate columns.

We measure to the lowest obstruction in the actual footprint, not to the ridge. That means trusses, purlins, sprinkler lines, radiant tube heat, conduit, and the garage door track when it is open — the door track catches more people than anything else. If you are under twelve feet, we are usually pointing you at a baseplate two-post, a four-post with a lower overall height, or a mid-rise scissor for tires and brakes. Power: 220V, Single Phase, and Where the Drop Goes

Nearly every lift we put in an Iowa pole barn runs on 220V single phase, typically drawing 20 to 30 amps depending on the power unit. That is a dedicated circuit, not a share with the welder and the compressor. We have been called out to troubleshoot slow lifts that turned out to be a long undersized run from a subpanel at the far end of a 60-foot building — voltage drop makes a healthy motor act tired.

Plan the drop before the walls get lined. On a two-post, the power unit sits on the driver-side column, so you want the receptacle within a few feet of that column at working height. On a four-post, it depends on the model and which end you set the power side. If your barn is still 200-amp service feeding a house and a shop, get an electrician to look at total load before you add a hydraulic power unit and an air compressor in the same season. We are not electricians and we do not pull permits, but we will tell you exactly where the lift needs power and how much, and we work alongside plenty of central Iowa electricians who have done this before.

Two-Post, Four-Post, or Scissor for a Barn Shop

The right lift depends on whether you are wrenching or storing. If you are pulling wheels, doing suspension, exhaust, and brakes, a two-post is the answer — open underside, arms out of the way, and you can work standing up. Ten thousand pounds covers cars, half-tons, and most three-quarter-tons; if you are lifting duallies, one-tons, or a loaded service truck, we push you to 12,000 or 15,000 and a taller column.

If the goal is parking two vehicles in one bay, a four-post is easier to live with. It drives on, it does not need the same anchoring commitment, and some models can be moved with caster kits if you rearrange the barn later. The tradeoff is that the runways are in the way of everything you actually want to reach. Mid-rise scissors split the difference for tire and brake work in a low building. For commercial work in central Iowa we lean on Rotary and Challenger; for home and hobby barns, BendPak and Atlas cover most of what people need at a price that makes sense. Anchoring Into Post-Frame Concrete

Anchoring is where a pole barn lift install earns or loses its safety margin. We use the wedge anchors specified by the manufacturer, drilled to depth, blown clean, and torqued to spec — and we document that torque. Skipping the vacuum step is a real failure mode: dust in the hole cuts holding power dramatically, and it will pass a visual inspection while doing almost nothing.

Pole barn slabs bring two extra wrinkles. First, control joints and saw cuts — an anchor set too close to a joint or an edge does not have the concrete around it to develop full strength, so we shift the column or shim and re-lay the footprint rather than gamble. Second, in-floor heat. Radiant tubing under a barn slab is common in Iowa, and hitting a PEX loop with a hammer drill turns a one-day install into an expensive week. If you have in-floor heat, find your as-built drawing or let us scan before we drill. On one central Iowa build we shifted a lift’s whole footprint eighteen inches to stay clear of a heat loop, and the customer never noticed the difference in the bay.

What Install Day Actually Looks Like

A straightforward two-post in a clean barn with good concrete and power already run is a one-day job for our crew. We unload, lay out the footprint, confirm your drive-through width and door clearance, drill, anchor, set columns, run cables and hoses, plumb and bleed the hydraulics, cycle the lift under load, set the locks, and walk you through the operation and the daily checks. You get the manual, the torque record, and a straight answer on what to watch for in year one.

Where a job stretches is concrete work, ceiling conflicts, or a building that is not ready — snow up against the door, no clear bay, the slab still curing. Fresh concrete needs its full cure before it takes anchor load; we would rather come back than anchor into green concrete. Getting a Straight Quote on Your Building

When you call us about a pole barn lift install, the conversation is short and specific. We want slab thickness and age, whether it is reinforced, lowest ceiling obstruction inside the intended bay, sidewall height, bay width, door opening size, available power, whether there is in-floor heat, and the heaviest vehicle you plan to lift. Nine times out of ten that is enough for us to name a model and give you a real number, including anchors and freight.

What we will not do is sell you a lift that does not fit your building. If your ceiling is too low for the two-post you had your heart set on, we will say so and offer the baseplate or the scissor instead.
