Every winter and spring we get calls from Iowa pole barn owners who bought a 2 post or 4 post lift, had it delivered, and then discovered a problem that a pole barn lift installation checklist would have caught months earlier. Step One: Confirm Your Slab Thickness and Cure Time

The single most common failure point on any pole barn lift installation checklist is the slab. Most two post lifts need a minimum of 4 inches of properly reinforced concrete, and heavier 4 post or alignment lifts often call for more. Pole barns are notorious for being poured to a general-purpose thickness rather than a lift-rated one, because the builder didn’t know a lift was coming. If your barn is already up, get a core sample or at minimum a written spec from whoever poured it before you order equipment.

Cure time matters just as much as thickness. Fresh concrete needs to cure for a minimum of 28 days before anchors are set, and we’ve seen installations delayed by weeks because a customer poured a new pad specifically for the lift and didn’t build the cure time into their schedule. If you’re planning ahead, pour now and buy your lift closer to the install date. Rebar placement, PSI rating, and whether the slab is a floating pad versus tied into the perimeter footing all factor into whether anchors will hold under load. This is not a step to guess on. We’d rather answer a phone call about your slab now than get called out for a lift that walked its anchors loose after six months of use.

Step Two: Measure Ceiling Height and Truss Clearance

Pole barns vary wildly in eave height, and truss style matters as much as raw ceiling height. A 2 post lift needs enough overhead clearance to raise a full-size truck without the arms or the vehicle’s roof kissing the trusses. We measure from the finished slab to the lowest obstruction, not just to the roof peak, because purlins, lighting, and header beams all eat into your usable height. A 10-foot sidewall might sound like plenty until you account for the lift’s own height plus a raised vehicle.

Overhead-style or four-post lifts sometimes need blocking or additional truss reinforcement if you plan to hang anything from the structure, such as a rolling jack bridge or a canopy kit. We’ve walked into pole barns where the trusses were engineered for snow load only, with zero allowance for point loads from lift equipment. Before you finalize a model, send us your eave height, truss spacing, and roof pitch. It takes us a few minutes to tell you whether your building supports the lift you’re eyeing, and it saves you from ordering something that simply won’t clear your rafters.

Step Three: Verify Electrical Service and Circuit Capacity

Most hydraulic lifts run on 220V single phase, and pole barns are frequently wired for lighter loads like outlets, lighting, and maybe a compressor. Confirm your barn has a dedicated circuit sized correctly for the lift’s motor, and don’t assume the existing subpanel has room. We’ve shown up to install a lift only to find the customer needs an electrician on site first, which pushes the whole install back a day or more.

If your pole barn is off-grid or runs on a smaller generator setup, this becomes even more critical, since undersized power can damage a lift’s motor or trip breakers constantly under load. Step Four: Plan Your Bay Layout and Clearances

You need clearance on all sides for the vehicle doors to open fully, for a technician to walk around comfortably, and for the lift arms to swing without hitting a wall, workbench, or support post. Step Five: Confirm Delivery Access to the Site

Step Seven: Schedule Your Final Walkthrough and Safety Check

Once the lift is anchored, leveled, and wired, don’t skip a final walkthrough. Check that all anchors are torqued to spec, safety locks engage properly, cables are evenly tensioned, and the arms swing freely through their full range.
