We recently helped an off-road and overlanding build shop in West Des Moines solve a layout problem that a lot of builders run into: how do you get real exhaust and driveline access in a bay that also has to handle oversized trucks with lift kits, roof racks, and aftermarket bumpers? The Problem: A Multi-Use Bay With No Room for a Fixed Lift

The West Des Moines shop builds and modifies overlanding rigs — full-size trucks and SUVs with lift kits, skid plates, and custom exhaust routing. Their main bay had to double as fabrication space, storage for parts during long builds, and a lift area, sometimes all in the same week. A permanent two-post lift would have claimed that bay outright, and their ceiling height and floor anchoring options weren’t ideal for a four-post either. They needed something that could go up when a truck needed exhaust or driveline access and disappear when the floor space was needed for welding tables or parts staging.

That’s the exact scenario a portable auto scissor lift is built for. It doesn’t require floor anchoring, it can be rolled out of the way when not in use, and it gives technicians the mid-height access exhaust and driveline work actually demands — you rarely need a truck all the way in the air to swap a mid-pipe or service a transfer case, you need consistent, stable height at working level.

Bay Layout: Where We Positioned the Lift and Why

We mapped the bay before recommending a specific unit. The shop had one stall that stayed relatively clear most of the week, bordered by a rolling tool chest on one side and enough clearance on the other for a technician to walk a creeper around comfortably. That extra six inches of clearance we planned for ended up mattering within the first month.

Exhaust and driveline work rewards a lift that locks at multiple heights rather than just floor and full-up. Swapping a cat-back system or accessing a driveshaft carrier bearing is usually a knee-to-chest height job, not a walk-underneath job. The unit we specced locks in roughly two to two and a half inch increments, so technicians can set the truck exactly where their hands naturally fall instead of stooping under a fully raised vehicle or straining up at partial height.

That granularity cut real time off jobs during our first month of check-ins with the shop. Their lead technician told us the biggest change wasn’t the lift going up — it was not having to guess at a height and readjust twice before settling in. For driveline swaps involving u-joints and carrier bearings, having a locked, stable height at exactly the right level also improved the quality of the work, not just the speed.

Workflow Before and After: Where the Time Was Going

Before the install, the shop was using a combination of floor jacks and jack stands for most exhaust and driveline access, which meant setup and teardown time on every single job. A technician might spend fifteen or twenty minutes getting a truck safely elevated and stable before ever touching a wrench, and that time repeated itself every time the vehicle needed to come back down for a test drive and go back up again.

With the portable auto scissor lift in place, that setup time dropped to under two minutes in most cases. Because the unit stays in the bay and rolls rather than needing to be assembled or repositioned from storage, technicians treated it more like a permanent fixture during busy stretches while still being able to clear the bay entirely when a big fabrication job needed open floor. That flexibility changed how they scheduled work — driveline and exhaust jobs got batched into the same day more often because the lift was always ready to go.

Capacity and Vehicle Mix Considerations

Overlanding builds run heavy. Full-size trucks with steel bumpers, winches, auxiliary fuel tanks, and armor plating can weigh considerably more than the stock vehicle, and we made sure the shop’s portable auto scissor lift was rated well above their heaviest anticipated build, not just their average one. Undersizing capacity in a build shop like this is a bigger risk than in a typical repair shop, because the whole business model is adding weight to vehicles over time.

We also talked through what happens if their build mix shifts toward even larger platforms down the road. Because the lift is portable, upgrading later doesn’t mean a re-installation project — it means bringing in a higher-capacity unit and repositioning it in the same bay layout we already mapped out. That’s a meaningful advantage over a fixed lift, which would require anchoring and structural review to upgrade capacity.
