A southeast Iowa RV and trailer service shop had been putting off buying a portable auto scissor lift for two years while they finished a garage expansion, and last summer they finally pulled the trigger. Their operation runs a mix of long-haul motorhome service, boat-trailer bearing work, and dinghy-vehicle maintenance for RV owners passing through on their way to the Ozarks or the Missouri lakes. They’re a small crew — two techs plus the owner — so every purchase has to earn its keep. A year in, the lift has paid for itself twice over on transmission work alone. This article walks through their first year of ownership, from build-out sequencing through the first heavy transmission drop.

The build-out sequencing question that came first

The reason the southeast Iowa shop waited two years was sequencing. They were adding a second bay, running new electrical, and pouring a fresh slab across half the building. Buying a lift before the concrete was ready would have been foolish. But the question the owner asked us — the smart one — was whether he should design the new slab specifically for a portable auto scissor lift or for a permanent 2-post. That’s a real fork with real cost implications, and we walked him through it before the concrete crew even started.

Our recommendation was to build a slab that could hold either. A 6-inch overpour with #4 rebar handles a 12,000-lb 2-post anchor pattern and a 9,000-lb portable scissor without complaint. That gave him optionality. Six months later, when he finally decided he wanted the flexibility of portable over the fixed footprint of a permanent, the slab was ready. That’s the sequencing lesson: pour once for the biggest lift you might ever install, then choose the lift after the concrete is cured. Working the other direction — buying the lift first and then realizing the slab won’t hold it — is expensive and slow. Why he chose portable over permanent

Once the slab cured, the owner walked us back through his shop-flow math. His new bay has to serve three customer types: RV owners with a tow vehicle that needs light service, trailer owners needing bearing repacks, and the occasional walk-in passenger car. None of those alone justifies a dedicated 2-post. A portable auto scissor lift covers all three because it lifts a Jeep for tow-vehicle service in the morning, a boat trailer for bearings at lunch, and a walk-in Camry for a brake inspection in the afternoon. A permanent 2-post would sit idle whenever a trailer was in the bay.

The other factor was future-proofing. Their long-term plan involves adding a mobile-column setup for the motorhomes themselves, and a portable scissor plays nicely with mobile columns because it stows completely out of the way. A permanent 2-post would have limited the coach service side of the business. He wanted the flexibility to grow into either direction without stranding his lift investment. That decision — pick the more flexible tool now, keep the roadmap open — is a hallmark of small shops that survive their first decade. We wrote the flexibility argument into the quote so his bookkeeper could see the strategic value alongside the price. He signed within a week.

Delivery day and integrating with the new build-out

Delivery landed on a Wednesday, three months after the slab cured. We wheeled the crated portable auto scissor lift into the new bay, uncrated on-site, and positioned it against the wall his electrician had already prepped with a 220V outlet. That prep work is the payoff of good sequencing. On shops that don’t plan the electrical up front, we end up running temporary cords or scheduling a follow-up install day. On this job, install ran uninterrupted for about three hours from crate open to first cycle under load.

First real load was a Ford Transit van the shop was already servicing for a customer. The pad locations sit under the frame just inboard of the sliding-door track, and the arm restraints locked cleanly into position. We lifted to chest height, released hydraulic pressure to seat the cams, and left the van on mechanical locks for 15 minutes as a shake-down. Zero drift. The techs watched the whole cycle and asked good questions about seal maintenance and adapter storage. By the time we packed up, they were already lining up the next appointment — a Class B dinghy vehicle needing a differential fluid change. That’s how the first day is supposed to end: not with paperwork, but with the next job on the calendar.

The first transmission service on a Ford Transit

Two weeks into ownership, they took on their first real transmission service — a Ford Transit with a 10-speed automatic that needed a full fluid and filter replacement. Transit transmissions sit tight against the frame rails with limited pan clearance, and the drain plug lives in an awkward spot near the driver’s side. On jack stands, this job takes half a day and burns through techs’ patience. On a portable auto scissor lift at chest height, it took a shade over two hours including the fluid warm-up and refill.

The technique matters: they lifted the van, positioned a transmission jack under the pan, loosened the pan bolts in the manufacturer-spec sequence, dropped the pan slowly to catch the fluid, cleaned the mating surface, replaced the filter, laid new gasket sealer, and refilled through the fill port at the top of the case. The lift held the van rock-solid the entire time and the cams engaged automatically as they walked the pan up and down. That transmission service — a job they used to send out — became a booked-in-house profit line at premium shop rates. Over the first year they’ve done nine similar transmission services on Transit, Sprinter, and E-series chassis. Each one paid for a meaningful slice of the lift. That’s the ROI arc every small shop wants to see.

Trailer bearing work — the unexpected profit line

Boat trailers, cargo trailers, and RV toy-haulers all need bearing repacks on a regular schedule, and none of them fit a permanent 2-post. The southeast Iowa shop used to refer trailer work out to a marine dealer 40 miles away. After the portable auto scissor lift arrived, they started keeping the work in-house. A boat trailer sits happily on the scissor frame — pad the axle beams, lift, spin the hubs, service the bearings, put fresh grease in, and lower.

They booked 40 trailer bearing jobs in the first year, split between summer boat prep and fall trailer storage. At their shop rate per axle, that’s a healthy revenue line that didn’t exist before the lift. RV owners in particular love the one-stop convenience — they drop the motorhome for service and the shop repacks the boat trailer bearings while the coach is on the mobile columns. It’s the kind of cross-sell that turns a single customer visit into a bigger ticket. Winter cycle and cold-weather fluid

Southeast Iowa winters are milder than Ames but the shop still sits in an unheated building on cold mornings. By December, the pump on the portable scissor was sluggish on the first cycle each day. We called the owner and recommended swapping to a synthetic cold-weather hydraulic fluid during the next scheduled fluid change. The synthetic fill added about $30 to the annual service cost and completely eliminated the cold-cycle delay.

Cold-weather fluid is the single most under-rated maintenance choice for a portable auto scissor lift in Iowa. Manufacturers ship the units with a standard ATF Type F that behaves fine at 60 degrees but slugs down below freezing. The tech ends up sitting on his hands for 10 or 15 minutes waiting for the pump to warm before the first lift of the day. Multiply that across a winter and you lose hours. Year-one revenue report and what we’d change

Twelve months in, the southeast Iowa shop has cycled the lift about 400 times. Downtime totaled less than a day across the year, driven by one fluid change and one arm-pad rubber swap. Revenue directly attributable to the lift — transmission services, trailer bearings, and cross-sell tickets — paid back the total install cost inside six months. Everything from month seven onward is margin. That’s the arc every small-shop owner wants and it’s the arc we consistently see when the lift is right-sized to the business.

What would we change on this install? Two things. First, we’d have specified the 220V pump instead of the 110V from day one because their volume outgrew the 110V duty cycle by month four. They upgraded the pump under warranty, but a first-order 220V would have saved the phone call. Second, we’d have delivered the tall-adapter kit at the same time as the lift because they use it constantly for lifted vans and taller trucks.
