We recently walked through this exact process with a repair shop in southeast Iowa that wanted to add alignment capability without pouring new concrete or committing to a fixed-location lift. Why This Southeast Iowa Shop Went Portable for Alignment

The shop in question runs a busy general repair bay and wanted to bring alignment work in-house instead of sending it down the road. Their building had limited floor space and a low ceiling in one bay, which ruled out a lot of permanent rack options. We use a level across multiple points of the intended footprint and check for cracks, spalling, or old anchor holes from previous equipment that could indicate a weak section of slab.

At this southeast Iowa shop, the floor was in solid shape — poured within the last several years with no visible settling — but we still flagged one corner near a floor drain where the slab had a slight pitch built in for drainage. We adjusted the planned lift position by a few feet to avoid that section entirely, which is a minor change on paper but would have caused ongoing alignment accuracy headaches if we’d ignored it.

Power, Lighting, and Workflow Around the Lift

Most portable scissor lifts run on standard shop power, but alignment equipment sometimes adds its own power and lighting needs — cameras, targets, and displays that work better with consistent lighting and minimal glare. During the site survey we noted where the shop’s existing outlets sat relative to the planned lift position and recommended one additional outlet closer to the bay to avoid extension cords crossing a walking path. We also talked through overhead lighting, since alignment techs need to clearly see wheel targets and undercarriage components.

Workflow matters just as much as wiring. We asked how vehicles typically flow through this bay — which direction they pull in, where the write-up desk is, where parts get staged — so the portable auto scissor lift’s default position wouldn’t create a bottleneck during their busiest hours. Because it’s portable, they have flexibility to shift it later, but starting in the right spot avoids unnecessary moves down the road.

Once we were satisfied with the empty cycle, we loaded a shop vehicle and rechecked level and alignment-readiness before calling the job complete. This kind of methodical install day process is exactly why the site survey matters so much upfront — nearly everything we checked on install day was something we’d already verified on paper weeks earlier, so there were no surprises.
