The Fleet’s Problem: Multi-Bay Shops, Mixed Vehicle Types

This operator runs light and medium duty service vehicles across two southwest Iowa locations, and the shop layout at both sites is tighter than a dedicated repair facility would be. Bays are shared between quick maintenance and heavier suspension work, and a permanent 2-post lift would have locked each bay into one function. He needed equipment that could go in, do the job, and get out of the way when a bay needed to flex for something else.

Suspension and shock replacement is repetitive, high-volume work for a fleet like this. Every vehicle needs the wheels hanging free and even weight distribution to avoid loading the suspension incorrectly during the swap. Symmetric Arms: The Straightforward Choice for Standard Trucks

Symmetric lift arms extend the same distance on both sides of the lift, positioning the vehicle centered directly over the base. For a fleet running mostly standard-cab and extended-cab pickups without major aftermarket modification, this is usually the simplest and most predictable setup. We installed the symmetric configuration at the operator’s first location, primarily servicing his newer trucks.

Technicians reported faster load-in times because there’s no guesswork about door swing or centering the vehicle before raising it. For shock and strut work specifically, where you want even, predictable clearance on both sides to move between wheels, symmetric arms performed well. The tradeoff showed up on longer wheelbase vans, where door clearance against the lift arms became tight in a couple of bays with limited width. It wasn’t a dealbreaker, but it was noticeable enough that we flagged it for the second location’s configuration.

Asymmetric Arms: Better Door Clearance for Vans and Mixed Fleets

Asymmetric arms offset the front and rear arm lengths, which shifts the vehicle’s position relative to the lift base and typically opens up wider door swing on the driver’s side. At the operator’s second southwest Iowa location, where the fleet includes more cargo vans and a couple of longer wheelbase trucks, we set up the portable auto scissor lift with an asymmetric configuration instead.

The difference was immediate for technicians getting in and out of vehicles repeatedly during suspension jobs, since they weren’t squeezing past a lift arm every time. Loading took slightly longer because centering the vehicle correctly on asymmetric arms takes a bit more attention than a straight pull onto symmetric ones, but that cost a few extra seconds per vehicle, not minutes. For a fleet with mixed vehicle types and technicians moving in and out of cabs constantly, asymmetric arms were the better overall fit despite that small learning curve.

What the Side-by-Side Comparison Actually Showed

Running both configurations concurrently across the two shops for several weeks gave the operator real data instead of a guess. The symmetric setup was marginally faster for straightforward truck-only bays with no van traffic. The asymmetric setup won clearly wherever vans or longer wheelbase vehicles were common, and technicians at that location reported less frustration overall.

Neither configuration was objectively better across the board, which is the honest answer we give most fleet customers even though it’s less satisfying than a simple recommendation. The right call depends entirely on what’s actually rolling through your bays day to day. We’ve seen operators guess wrong on this and end up retrofitting arm kits later, which costs more than getting the configuration right from the start.

Suspension and Shock Work: Where Height Settings Matter Most

For shock and strut replacement, technicians don’t always need the lift at full height. Sometimes it’s more efficient to work at a mid-range height where the suspension is partially loaded but the wheel still hangs free enough to remove. A quality portable auto scissor lift locks at multiple height increments rather than forcing an all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down choice, and that flexibility matters more for suspension work than almost any other job type.

We made sure both southwest Iowa locations understood the full range of lock positions before their crews started using the lifts daily. Technicians who’d only worked with older, cruder lifts were surprised at how much faster shock jobs went once they weren’t guessing at a single fixed height. That’s a small operational detail, but across a fleet doing dozens of suspension jobs a week, it adds up to real labor savings.

Portability and Fleet-Wide Deployment Considerations

Because these lifts don’t require the concrete anchoring a permanent 2-post does, the operator has the option to relocate units between bays or even between his two locations if seasonal demand shifts. That flexibility was part of the original pitch for going with a portable auto scissor lift instead of committing to fixed lifts at every station. For a small fleet balancing tight budgets against growing service volume, that adaptability is worth real money over the life of the equipment.

For suspension and shock replacement specifically, prioritize a portable auto scissor lift with multiple locking height positions over one that only offers a couple of fixed stops.
