An Urbandale off-road and overlanding builder called us in early spring last year needing a portable auto scissor lift for a garage that already held two lifted 4Runners, a rooftop-tent build stand, and a wall of skid plates. He builds and sells overlanding rigs on the weekends and does his own maintenance including engine oil pan gasket work — the kind of job that eats a Saturday if you’re doing it on jack stands. We walked him through the used vs new decision, delivered a new mid-rise portable, and followed up six months later for a real Iowa case study. The garage: too full for a permanent lift
The Urbandale builder’s garage is a three-stall attached with a permanent workbench along the back wall and shelving down one side. Two of the stalls hold his rigs; the third is his build stall. A permanent 2-post would have eaten the build stall entirely — the columns would land right where the rooftop tent lives on its stand. A 4-post would have blocked his roll-around tool cart. The used vs new decision framework we walked him through
Used lifts show up in the Iowa market from time to time — shop closures, retirement sales, and estate auctions. We’ve inspected dozens of them, and about one in three is worth buying. The rest are either cosmetically rough with hidden cylinder rust, missing manuals and adapter kits, or seven-thousand-cycle veterans on their second seal set with a third looming. Our framework: we ask for photos of the cylinder rods, the cam plates, the arm-restraint teeth, and the frame welds. If they don’t, we recommend new. For the Urbandale builder, a promising used unit came up at auction, but the cylinder photos showed pitting we didn’t like. We recommended new. He agreed. That’s the honest conversation — sometimes used works, sometimes it doesn’t, and a good installer will tell you which one applies to the specific unit in front of you. Why we specified a mid-rise portable scissor
The other decision was full-rise vs mid-rise. A full-rise portable auto scissor lift gives standing-height access under the vehicle — perfect for exhaust work or a full tear-down. A mid-rise tops out around 48 inches and is optimized for wheel work, brake service, and moderate under-body access. For an overlanding builder who spends most of his time doing oil pan gaskets, skid-plate swaps, and wheel-and-tire work, the mid-rise is the smarter tool because it stows shorter and rolls easier.
Full-rise units are heavier, tip more easily during storage, and need a taller ceiling clearance when a truck is at max lift. On his 10-foot ceiling with a lifted 4Runner, a full-rise would have put the roof rack a foot from the ceiling — enough clearance for the truck but no room to swing a work light or a lift arm overhead. The mid-rise put the truck at chest height, which is comfortable for pan-gasket work and easy on the ceiling. This is the kind of subtle decision that a garage tour reveals and a phone quote doesn’t. He told us later that the mid-rise call was his favorite thing about the buying process because it meant he could still use the ceiling storage above the lift for kayaks. Install day and the first cycle under a loaded 4Runner
Install took a shade under three hours because we had to build a floor-marker stencil for the storage location and route a new 220V outlet on the back wall. The lift itself uncrated fast, the pump primed clean, and we cycled it three times empty. First real load was his primary 4Runner — a fifth-gen with 33-inch tires, a rooftop tent, a full skid-plate array, and a rear bumper — probably 5,800 lb curb weight. The lift cycled cleanly, the arm restraints engaged crisply, and the safety cams clicked into every notch on the way up. That test convinces the customer the lift is safe under his actual rig, not a sales-brochure sedan. Skid-plate builds and the storage rhythm
Skid-plate fabrication is where the overlanding builder makes his weekend money. Cutting, welding, and fitting a skid plate to a customer’s rig requires the truck up in the air for hours at a time. Before the lift, he did that work on jack stands and paid for it in back pain and slow progress. Now he lifts the truck, fits the plate, marks the mounts, drops the truck to weld tabs, and lifts again for final fit. The cycle time on a full front-and-rear skid build has dropped from a two-day job to one long day.
Between customer builds, he rolls the portable auto scissor lift back to its wall spot and reclaims the build stall for rooftop tent assembly. The storage rhythm — lift out, work, lift back — has become second nature. He mentioned that his wife stopped complaining about the garage because the lift disappears when he’s done. Six-month follow-up and what we’d do differently
At the six-month mark, we called for a case-study update. The lift had cycled about 80 times, no fluid leaks, and no seal issues. He’d done two oil pan gaskets, four skid-plate builds, three tire rotations, and a rear differential fluid change. Zero downtime. We inspected the arm-restraint teeth for wear — normal — and topped off the reservoir. Total service labor at six months: about 30 minutes.
What would we change? One thing. We’d recommend the pad extender kit at delivery instead of shipping it separately. Two, we’d walk him through the fluid-choice question during install and recommend synthetic from day one because his garage sits at 40 degrees most of the winter.
