Financing a Portable Auto Scissor Lift for an Iowa Great Lakes Restoration Shop

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

A car restoration shop owner near Spirit Lake or Okoboji who takes in brake service and rotor swaps between long-term builds has a specific problem: cash flow is lumpy and floor space is finite. A portable auto scissor lift fits both realities better than most owners realize. We’re Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, and every summer we quote several Iowa Great Lakes restoration shops on this same question. The freight is manageable, the install is simple, and, the piece most people forget to ask about first, the financing terms across the industry now let you spread the cost across a payment schedule that keeps the shop breathing through a slow winter.

Every scissor unit on this collection page qualifies for our 0% APR twelve-month program with a 90-day payment deferral, plus longer six-to-nine percent terms if you want to stretch a heavier lift over more months.

Why financing the lift changes the buy decision

Restoration shops around West Okoboji and Spirit Lake tend to work in a slow-fast rhythm we know well. May through August the boat crowd shows up, the brake jobs and rotor swaps stack up, and the shop makes most of its cash. December and January the phone barely rings. Buying a lift outright means writing a check in a month that felt fine and remembering it in a month that does not. A financed lift flips that. You pay a manageable monthly number and the shop takes it in stride, whether the checks are hot or cold that week.

The math also changes what class of lift you can put on the floor. A shop that could reasonably justify a used 6,000-pound light-duty unit for cash can, on the same monthly budget, put a heavier and more capable scissor in the bay. That opens the shop up to bigger vehicles, alignment work, and jobs it would have turned down before. We walk every Iowa Great Lakes customer through both sets of numbers, cash and financed, and we do it before we finalize the model. The lift you would pick with cash is often not the lift you would pick with a payment schedule.

The 0% twelve-month structure most shops start with

The financing product we most commonly write for a portable auto scissor lift is a twelve-month zero-percent program with a ninety-day deferral. The way it works is straightforward: you sign, the lift ships and installs, and you make no payment for the first three months while you break the equipment in. Starting month four, you pay one twelfth of the total price each month for the balance of the term. There is no interest inside the twelve-month window. If you pay the balance early, there is no penalty for that either.

That structure fits a summer-heavy shop almost perfectly. If we install in April, your first payment is due in July when brake work is peaking. If you install in September, your ninety-day deferral pushes the first payment into January, and if that is going to sting you can choose to prepay two months during the fall. Do not overthink the interest math either. Zero-percent inside twelve months is the same effective cost as writing a check, except the check clears in twelve pieces instead of one. The paperwork is short. We handle it on our end and hand you a copy on install day.

When to stretch a portable auto scissor lift over a longer term

Not every shop wants the payment squeezed into twelve months. If you are buying a heavier drive-on scissor, the kind that handles a 3/4-ton pickup and a dually with room to spare, the monthly hit at twelve months can be more than you want to commit to. In that case the lender we work with quotes longer terms, typically thirty-six to sixty months, at six to nine percent depending on your credit profile and the deposit you put down.

We are honest with restoration shop owners about this: those numbers are quoted by the bank, not by us, and the exact rate you get is not something we can promise on the phone. What we can promise is a straightforward application process and a real answer within a few business days. A common structure we see is a portable auto scissor lift financed over thirty-six months at seven percent with fifteen percent down. That keeps the monthly payment low enough to survive the January phone-silence and gives you the flexibility to pay ahead in a strong summer. If you are on the fence about the payment size, we would rather quote both and let you choose than push you into either one blind.

What documents the lender actually asks for

Shop owners waste time preparing paperwork they do not need. Here is what actually gets asked. For the twelve-month zero-percent program, the lender wants a completed application, one form of photo ID, and the shop’s business name and address. Personal guarantee if the shop is a sole prop, standard business info if it is an LLC or S-corp. No tax returns for the small-dollar deal, no bank statements. It is a fast process and it clears in a couple business days.

For the longer bank-loan terms, the paperwork is heavier. Expect to hand over two years of business tax returns, two years of personal returns if you sign the personal guarantee, three months of business bank statements, and a P&L. Nothing exotic, but plan for a week rather than a couple days. The last thing to mention: the lender we use does not require a written quote from us to start the underwriting file. You can begin the application before you finalize the lift model. If you switch models during underwriting, we update the invoice and the bank re-runs the number, that is normal and does not slow the deal. What does slow the deal is waiting to apply until the crate is on our dock.

Down payment options and how they change the monthly number

A modest down payment moves the monthly payment more than most shop owners expect. On a typical portable auto scissor lift financed over thirty-six months, putting fifteen percent down instead of nothing cuts the monthly by roughly fifteen percent, and the effective rate the bank writes usually improves half a point because the lender’s exposure is lower. If you have the cash, applying it as a down payment is almost always better than holding it in the account to pay a couple months ahead.

The exception is a shop that expects to buy a second lift within the year. In that case we tell owners to keep the cash on hand for the second machine and finance the first with nothing down. You will pay a slightly higher rate on the first lift, but you preserve the ability to buy the second one without another loan application. We have a couple Iowa Great Lakes restoration shops that ran exactly this pattern, buying a mid-rise scissor first and adding a drive-on scissor a year later, and both would tell you the sequence worked better than trying to write two checks close together. The point is the down payment is a lever, not a rule.

The payment schedule and your seasonal cash flow

Now put the payment schedule against your actual revenue calendar. A restoration shop near Okoboji that does forty percent of its annual revenue between Memorial Day and Labor Day should not be signing a payment schedule that treats every month the same. On the twelve-month zero-percent program you cannot alter the monthly amount, but you can prepay whenever you want, and we recommend restoration shops set aside two months of payment during peak season for exactly that reason. Pay ahead in August. Coast through February.

On the longer bank product, some lenders will structure a seasonally-weighted schedule, larger payments in summer and smaller in winter, if you ask on the application. It is not automatic and it is not always approved, but it is worth asking. Whichever product you land on, keep in mind that the lift starts making money the day it is installed. A brake job that used to take you a jack, jack stands, and forty minutes on your back gets done in twelve minutes on the scissor, and the revenue lift on those minutes across a full summer easily covers the monthly payment. Give us a call at 800-674-9302 and we will build the actual number for your shop.

What we hand you at the end of the term

At the end of a financed portable auto scissor lift term, whether that is twelve months or sixty, you own the lift free and clear. There is no balloon payment, no residual, and no equipment we come back to pick up. The paperwork closes on the lender’s side and the lift is yours. That is different from an equipment lease and we want to be clear about it, because a lot of restoration shop owners mix up financing and leasing in their head.

Owning matters because a scissor lift, treated well, has a long useful life. A ten-year-old unit in a restoration shop is still doing work, and it holds meaningful resale value if you ever choose to trade up. The bank loan we help you write is a purchase, not a rental. Once you own the lift, the ongoing cost is a can of hydraulic fluid every year or two and a set of pins if a lock cycle ever needs attention. We keep the wear parts in stock in Ames and can ship overnight to the Iowa Great Lakes region if you need them. If any of the financing sounds abstract, email founder@autoliftserv.com with the model you are considering and we will send back a real quote with the payment schedule you would actually sign.
