A weekend hobbyist mechanic in Davenport who does restoration and metal work in a two-and-a-half car garage does not need a commercial lift, but a portable auto scissor lift is often exactly the right piece of equipment for the space. The trick is running through the pre-purchase checklist before you write the check, because a hobbyist who misses one detail ends up with a lift that will not fit under the beam or that his single-phase panel cannot power. Item one: measure your garage in three dimensions

The first checklist item is a simple tape measure. Measure the ceiling height at three points across the bay you intend to use: at the door, in the middle, and at the back wall. Measure the width of the bay at the door and at the widest point. Measure the depth from the door line to the back wall. Write all three numbers down.

Then measure the door itself, both open and closed. Note anything that hangs down: a door track, a garage door opener rail, an overhead light fixture, a beam. Every one of those things reduces your usable ceiling height at that specific spot. A Davenport garage is often nine to ten feet at the ceiling with a track dropping the usable clearance to eight and a half or nine. That is workable for a scissor lift, which raises the vehicle only a few feet, but it is not workable for a two-post that needs eleven or more feet. Before you look at any specific lift, know these numbers cold. Every hobbyist who calls us and does not have them ends up guessing, and guessing is how you buy a lift that will not fit. Twenty minutes with a tape measure is the smartest twenty minutes in the whole purchase process.

Item two: check the electrical panel

Second checklist item is the electrical panel. Open the panel and look at what you have. A hobbyist garage in Davenport is almost always single-phase, with 100 amp or 200 amp service. Most portable auto scissor lift models sized for hobby use run on 110V single-phase, which means any standard 20-amp outlet works. But some of the heavier drive-on models want 220V single-phase, which is more amperage and probably a dedicated circuit.

If you are looking at a lift that requires 220V and your garage does not have a 220V outlet nearby, get a licensed electrician’s quote for pulling the new circuit before you buy the lift. The cost varies based on the run distance from the panel and whether the electrician can go through the wall interior or has to route conduit outside. If the electrical work is expensive, sometimes the right answer is to buy a lift that runs on the outlet you already have. A slightly slower lift cycle is a fine tradeoff for saving several hundred dollars in electrical work. Check the panel before you check the lift. The two decisions are linked.

Item three: verify the floor

Third checklist item is the floor. A hobbyist Davenport garage usually has four inches of concrete, which is what an automotive scissor lift is designed to sit on. Confirm the thickness if you can. If you built the garage or the house yourself, you know. If you bought it, either check the original builder’s spec sheet or hire a slab-scanning service to verify. Concrete anchoring is not required for a portable scissor, but the floor still has to carry the point load safely.

Also look at the floor visually. Are there any cracks in the concrete where you plan to park the lift? Small hairline cracks are cosmetic and do not matter. Larger cracks that run across the parking area may indicate settling or a subgrade issue and are worth having looked at. Are there any obvious patches from previous work, like a plumbing repair or a sewer cleanout that was cut in and refilled? Patch areas are unknowns and are best avoided as the parking spot for the lift. If your garage floor is fully unpatched and structurally sound, you are ready. If it is not, either move the lift to a bay that passes or address the concrete before the lift arrives.

Item four: pick the right capacity and confirm your fleet

Fourth checklist item is capacity. What are you actually lifting? Make a list of every vehicle in the household plus every project car in the driveway. For each one, look up the curb weight. A restoration hobbyist doing metal work on classic cars is usually lifting vehicles in the 3,000 to 4,500 pound range, which fits comfortably inside a 6,000 pound lift. Add a margin and buy at 6,000 or 9,000 pounds depending on what else might roll into the garage.

Do not undersize the lift to save money. The next larger capacity typically costs only modestly more, and it gives you headroom for a bigger project or a friend’s truck. Do not oversize either, because a bigger lift is often physically larger and takes more garage space. The middle-of-the-road answer for most Davenport hobbyists is a 6,000 to 9,000 pound portable auto scissor lift, and that covers essentially every reasonable weekend project. If your fleet includes a 3/4-ton pickup or a diesel dually, step up. If your fleet is all classic passenger cars, stay in the lower range. Match the lift to your actual vehicles, not to a hypothetical future.

Item five: understand the lock system

Fifth checklist item is the lock system on the specific lift you are considering. A good portable auto scissor lift has mechanical locks that engage automatically at increments of roughly two to two-and-a-half inches through the full range. You raise the lift to the height you want, release the pressure, and the mechanical locks catch and hold the load. The hydraulic system is not what holds the vehicle up, the mechanical locks are.

Some cheaper lifts have only a few discrete lock positions, or worse, only hydraulic hold with no positive mechanical stop. Avoid those. On restoration and metal work you may have the vehicle in the air for hours at a time, and you want to know the lift is not going to drift on you. Ask the salesperson to specifically confirm the number and spacing of lock positions and whether the locks are positive mechanical stops. Read the spec before you buy.

Item six: pick the financing that fits your cash flow

Sixth checklist item is the financing decision. A weekend hobbyist mechanic is not running a business and does not have a shop cash-flow rhythm, but you still have a personal budget. If your household budget can absorb the monthly payment, this is often the right choice even if you could pay cash, because it preserves your savings for the next unexpected expense.

Every hobbyist who has done this ahead of time has been happy with the outcome. Every hobbyist who has not has either canceled the order or regretted stretching the budget. Fifteen minutes of financing conversation is the last checklist item before you sign.

Item seven: plan the install day

Seventh and final checklist item is install day itself. A portable auto scissor lift arrives freight on a pallet. For a hobbyist install, plan an afternoon: uncrate, position, cycle up and down through the lock range, plug in and verify. If you have a friend with a truck or a hand truck, use one to move the crate from the driveway to the garage. Have your 110V outlet or 220V outlet installed and tested before delivery. Have the parking spot clear and the floor clean. Have a fresh gallon of hydraulic fluid on hand, because most lifts ship with fluid but you want the extra in case any spills or seeps during the first few cycles. Cycle a known-good vehicle up and down three or four times before you actually park a project car on the lift, so you feel the lock catches and know exactly how the machine behaves.
