Before you buy, it helps to know what actually matters for site prep, because the mistakes we see are almost always avoidable and almost always show up in the first month of ownership.

Myth: Floor Flatness Doesn’t Matter for a Portable Lift

This is the single biggest misconception we hear from European-marque shops moving from a fixed 2-post to something they can roll between bays. A portable automotive scissor lift still needs a reasonably flat, structurally sound slab under its full footprint, not just under the wheels. Because these units are lighter and often unanchored, an out-of-level floor doesn’t just cause a wobble, it changes how evenly the scissor arms load, which accelerates wear on pivot pins and bushings faster than a bolted-down 2-post ever would.

We tell every shop doing brake and rotor work to check their slab with a 4-foot level in at least three spots where the lift will actually park, not just near a doorway where it’s convenient. If you’ve got an epoxy floor with a slight crown for drainage, that’s usually fine, but a dip or heave from an old oil change pit or a patched crack is not. It’s a five-minute check that saves you from finding out the hard way, three months in, that your lift rocks slightly under a loaded control arm during a brake job.

Myth: Any 110V Outlet Will Do

The second mistake is electrical, and it trips up more shops than floor prep does. Myth: Adjustable Height Settings Are Just a Marketing Line

Myth: You Don’t Need a Real Site Survey for Something Portable

Because these units roll on casters or a low-profile base, shops assume a full site survey is overkill. We disagree, and it’s one of the most common mistakes we correct on install day. A proper survey covers floor condition, power access, door clearance for delivery, and how you’ll actually store the unit when it’s not lifting a car, since a scissor lift left in a walkway becomes a trip hazard and a liability problem fast.

Certain models are designed to be used unanchored for short-duration light work, but many manufacturers still specify anchoring for full-weight-rated lifting, especially with rotor and brake service where a technician may be working under a wheel with the vehicle loaded on one side.

Read your specific model’s manual before you skip anchoring altogether. If your shop moves the lift between bays regularly, look for a model designed for that use case specifically rather than assuming a fixed-base unit will tolerate being dragged around on concrete. Myth: One Person Can Handle Setup and Calibration Alone

Shops with a lean crew sometimes assume unboxing and setting up a portable automotive scissor lift is a one-person job because it’s smaller than a 2-post. In practice, initial calibration, hydraulic bleed, and safety lock testing go faster and safer with two people, and skipping that step is a common source of early service calls.

We recommend having your install day scheduled when you’ve actually got two techs free, not squeezed between customer appointments. Myth: Maintenance Is the Same as a Fixed Lift

A portable unit sees different stress patterns from being moved, and hydraulic seals and cable or chain components (depending on model) need more frequent visual checks simply because the unit isn’t staying put in a stable, dust-free spot.

Build a quick weekly visual inspection into your shop routine, checking for hydraulic leaks, worn casters, and lock engagement before every heavy brake job. It takes five minutes and it’s the difference between a lift that lasts a decade in a busy specialty shop and one that needs unplanned parts and downtime in year two.
