An overlanding builder in the Des Moines metro was mid-way through a full garage build-out when he called us about a portable automotive scissor lift. He needed to service and modify his own rigs — a Tacoma on 35s, a 4Runner mid-build, and a project 80-series in pieces — and he wanted a lift that would fit into a garage that also had to house welding, storage racks, and a rooftop-tent staging area. This case study walks through what he chose, why, and how the install fit into his overall sequence.

Why a Portable Beat a Two-Post for This Build

The natural first thought for a serious build-out garage is a two-post. Two-posts give wheels-free access, they clear a lot of floor space when a truck is on them, and they are the workhorse of every commercial shop for a reason. The builder had considered one. What made him land on a portable automotive scissor lift instead was the multi-purpose bay problem.

He wanted the same bay to serve as truck service, welding fabrication, tent staging, and occasional trailer storage. A two-post bolts to the floor and lives there forever. A portable rolls into the corner when the welding table needs the bay. That flexibility was worth trading away the wheels-free access — for the jobs he did most often (drivetrain, exhaust, skid-plate work), the deck under-body access was fine.

Garage Build-Out Sequence — What Came First

The right sequence for a build-out garage matters. The builder came to the sequence question by trial and error, and he told us later he would have done it differently. What he did was: slab first, walls, insulation, drywall, then furniture, then lift. What he wished he’d done: slab first, walls, insulation, electrical rough-in (including the dedicated lift circuit), THEN drywall, then lift, then everything else around it.

Running electrical to the lift’s future position before drywall goes up saves a lot of retro-installation work. He ended up cutting drywall to run the 220V circuit for his portable automotive scissor lift, which he would rather not have done.

Slab prep is the other sequencing decision. If you are pouring a new slab, spec at least 4 inches of reinforced concrete rated for at least 3,000 psi. That is generous for a portable, but it also future-proofs the garage for a permanent lift if you ever change direction.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Storage

The builder’s garage has 12-foot ceilings, which comfortably handles a full-rise portable automotive scissor lift with a Tacoma on top. What he did not account for at first was overhead storage. His original plan had ceiling-mounted racks for rooftop tents and awnings running the full length of the bay. That collided with the lift’s maximum height.

The solve was to move the ceiling racks to the walls of the bay that don’t overlap with the lift’s working position. That gave him back a couple feet of unobstructed ceiling directly above where the lift operates. If you are planning a build with overhead storage, map the lift’s swept volume — the vertical column occupied when the lift is at max height with the tallest vehicle on it — before you install any ceiling racks.

Lesson learned: measure the vehicles you actually own and the ones you might buy. A truck on 35s eats a foot of ceiling that a stock truck does not.

Transmission Service on a Portable

The builder’s most common use case for the lift is transmission and transfer-case work on his overland rigs. On a portable automotive scissor lift with an open-center deck, transmission drops are cleaner than on a permanent four-post drive-on. The transmission tunnel is directly overhead, the transmission jack rolls in from either side of the deck, and the tech is not fighting the runway lips.

He runs a hydraulic transmission jack rated for the weight of his heaviest unit (a 4Runner V6 automatic with transfer case attached, roughly 300 pounds). The jack rolls onto the deck, positions under the pan, and the trans lowers straight down.

What he had to learn was load balance. Once the transmission is on the jack and disconnected, the truck’s weight redistributes forward. On a portable, that shift is more noticeable than on a two-post. He spots the truck slightly rearward of geometric center to counter the shift, and it works.

Welding, Fabrication, and Living Alongside the Lift

A portable automotive scissor lift and a welding table share a bay well because they don’t need to be in the same spot at the same time. The builder’s routine: roll the lift into working position for a service or mod job, do the work, roll it back to the corner, and set up the welding table where the lift was. Total transition time is under ten minutes.

What he had to add was a cover for the lift when welding nearby. Weld spatter on hydraulic hoses is bad news. A canvas cover — same one we ship with every portable — solves that. He drapes it over the lift whenever the welder is going and pulls it off before the next use.

Ventilation matters when the lift and the welder share a bay. He upgraded his exhaust fan and added a portable smoke eater. That is not a lift concern per se, but if you’re planning the same setup, factor it in.

Rolling on a Painted Concrete Floor

Concrete finish is a small detail with a bigger effect than most builders expect. The Des Moines customer painted his shop floor with a two-part epoxy for aesthetics and easy cleanup. The paint is durable, but caster wheels on a portable can leave marks or hot spots if the lift is rolled in the same lines repeatedly.

His fix was to add a rubber mat under the lift’s parking position — takes the weight in storage — and a set of casters with softer wheels for movement across the painted floor. If you are painting your garage floor and planning a portable, use polyurethane wheels rather than steel, and consider a lightweight mat under the resting position.

He also added a small tool cart alongside the lift with the pre-use inspection checklist, extra pucks, hydraulic top-off fluid, and a torque wrench. That tool cart lives next to the lift wherever the lift lives.

The Total Setup and What It Cost

The Des Moines metro builder ended up with a full-rise portable automotive scissor lift, freight delivered, a dedicated 220V electrical circuit installed by his electrician, extended approach ramps for his lifted rigs, a spare puck set, and a canvas cover. Total investment came in below what a permanent two-post plus a slab reinforcement plus install would have cost, and his bay stayed multi-use.
