A heavy-duty truck shop owner in Marion, Iowa called us about adding a portable automotive scissor lift to his lineup. His main service floor is set up for Class 6 through Class 8 trucks on heavy-duty two-post and four-post lifts. What he wanted the portable for was different: quick suspension and shock work on medium-duty pickups and light commercial vans that came through the door for one-off jobs. Why Even Add a Portable to a Heavy-Duty Shop
The Marion owner’s line of thinking: his heavy-duty lifts are the wrong tool for the smaller trucks and vans that occasionally come through. A Class 8 two-post can absolutely lift a Ford Transit or a Ram 2500 — but the bay costs him revenue every hour it is committed to a small job when a semi tractor could be up on it instead. Overhead vs. Baseplate — What Applies to a Portable
The overhead-vs-baseplate distinction usually refers to two-post lifts. Overhead two-posts have a crossbeam at the top connecting the columns, which keeps the floor between the posts clear. Baseplate two-posts have the crossmember at the floor, which keeps the ceiling clear.
A portable automotive scissor lift is neither, exactly. There is no permanent column and no permanent crossbeam. But the tradeoff is analogous: a portable with a fully-open working area under the deck (like an overhead two-post) offers less obstruction for underbody work, while a portable with lower structural stiffening (analogous to a baseplate) has a slightly heavier deck and lower approach.
For the Marion shop’s suspension work, we recommended the open-underbody design. Shock towers, coil springs, and control arms all need clear access, and the open-underbody portable delivered that without an overhead crossbeam getting in the way of tall techs.
The Lift Line Item — Commercial Grade Only
For a shop doing daily suspension work on 3/4-ton and one-ton trucks, we do not spec a home-garage-grade portable. For the Marion shop, we quoted a commercial-grade full-rise portable rated for the medium-duty work he needed. The price differential over a home-garage-grade unit was substantial, but for shop use, it is the right buy every time.
Freight and Install Labor for a Commercial Shop
A commercial-grade portable automotive scissor lift crates heavier than a home unit — often 2,000 lbs or more on the pallet. Freight is a several-hundred-dollar line item to Marion, and because his shop has a truck dock, we skipped the liftgate fee entirely. Delivery routed through Cedar Rapids on standard LTL.
Install labor is optional. For a commercial shop with capable mechanics, self-install saves a mid-hundreds to low-thousands line item. Electrical Prep and Panel Capacity
The Marion shop’s electrical infrastructure was already built for heavy commercial equipment — three-phase power, plenty of panel capacity, existing dedicated circuits for the other lifts. For shops with less capacity, the electrical prep line item can grow. If a shop is running out of panel space, adding a subpanel is a mid-single-digit-thousand job. For a commercial shop, we always recommend running the electrical bid before finalizing the lift purchase so the total setup cost is clear from day one.
Commercial voltage requirements vary. Most commercial-grade portables run 220V single-phase, but three-phase versions exist for shops with three-phase service and higher duty cycles.
Suspension Work — Where the Portable Actually Shines
Suspension and shock replacement on medium-duty pickups is where a portable automotive scissor lift really earns its place next to heavy-duty lifts. The open underbody puts spring perches, shock towers, and control-arm bushings all within tech reach. The mechanical safety cams lock the lift at a height where the tech can work standing up rather than crouched.
The Marion shop’s shop foreman told us afterward that shock replacement time on the portable was consistently faster than the same job on their two-post — because the tech didn’t have to route around the two-post’s arms. That gain of a few minutes per job adds up across a week of medium-duty tickets.
One limitation: the portable is not the right tool for wheels-free work. If a suspension job requires the wheels hanging free (some ball-joint replacements, some hub work), a two-post is still the right lift.
