When a hobbyist truck builder up in southern Minnesota called us last spring, he had one problem that most portable automotive scissor lift shoppers eventually run into: ceiling height. His overlanded Bronco already ate up most of the vertical space in his shop, and he wasn’t sure a lift could even fit. We drove up, took real measurements, walked the bay with him, and picked a portable automotive scissor lift setup that fit under his rafters with room to spare. This case study walks through the exact numbers we used, the tradeoffs we weighed, and what any Iowa or Minnesota builder should check before pulling the trigger on a mobile lift purchase.

The Southern Minnesota Bay Where the Lift Had to Fit
The shop was a detached three-stall garage about two hours north of the Iowa border. The owner had already resigned himself to only lifting one vehicle at a time. His build stall measured 12 feet wide, roughly 26 feet deep, with a ceiling that tapered from 9 feet 4 inches at the door to about 10 feet under the peak. The Bronco itself was around 78 inches tall on 35-inch tires, and he was worried a full-rise two-post would either not raise the vehicle high enough to work standing up, or worse, punch it through his roof trusses.
We measured everything: floor slab thickness, door opening, joist bottoms, and even the light fixtures hanging down from the rafters. What we found was that a low-profile, mobile scissor unit with a lift travel around 48 to 60 inches gave him plenty of working room without eating his ceiling. The measurements told the story before we ever priced anything out. That is the pattern we follow on every mobile lift site visit across the Upper Midwest: real numbers first, sales pitch second, because ceilings never stretch and rafters never move. He had headroom for the truck plus lift travel plus a good six inches to spare when everything was raised.
Why a Mid-Rise Portable Automotive Scissor Lift Was the Right Call
A full-rise two-post is the default answer for a shop that only does one vehicle at a time, but this build did not need one. Most of his work was suspension, sliders, skid plates, and armor fabrication. All of that happens between roughly knee and chest height on the vehicle, not standing straight up under it. Once we walked through his real task list, the mid-rise scissor made obvious sense. It picks the truck up high enough for tire removal, differential drops, and welding underneath the frame, without demanding a 12-foot ceiling.
Portable also mattered because he genuinely wanted to move the lift between stalls seasonally. In summer, the build sits closer to the door for airflow. In winter, it gets pushed deeper for the wood stove. A mobile scissor rolls on casters when unloaded, which no two-post ever does. We priced out two models with different pad widths, matched the pad geometry to his frame contact points, and let him pick the one that felt right. The buying process took about 40 minutes once we had the numbers on paper. The whole point of a mobile lift is optionality, and he wanted his stall back when he wasn’t wrenching.
The Ceiling-Height Math We Actually Walk Through
Every builder should learn this formula before they shop, because it kills the guesswork. Take your lowest ceiling point in the working footprint. Subtract the tallest vehicle you plan to service, measured with any roof rack, antenna, or awning still attached. Subtract the lift’s maximum travel height. What is left has to be at least four inches, ideally six or more, so nothing gets scraped when the lift stops at its top position. Do the math twice, once with an empty roof and once with the loaded roof rack, because overlanders forget about the loaded number until they hear the crunch.
For this Minnesota shop, the numbers looked like this: 112 inches of usable ceiling at the low point, minus 78 inches of vehicle, minus 26 inches of lift travel on the model we picked, leaves 8 inches of clearance. That is a comfortable margin. Had he chosen a full-rise, he would have been eating his rafters. This is also why we tell customers not to trust manufacturer marketing photos that show a lift raised inside a spacious open-air demo studio. Your shop is not that studio, and your ceiling has stuff hanging off it that the brochure never shows. Measure your actual shop, not the ideal one.
Overhead Door Swing and Other Clearances Everyone Forgets
Ceiling height gets all the attention, but door swing takes down almost as many mobile lift purchases in the Upper Midwest. When an overhead door rolls up, its tracks curve inward and the panels stack under the ceiling. That stacked area is often 12 to 18 inches lower than the fixed ceiling behind it. If you plan to raise a tall vehicle while the door is open, you must clear that stacked panel too. We watched our Minnesota customer’s door open and close before we finalized anything, and we found it dipped a full 14 inches lower than the ceiling. That number went right into our math.
Side clearance matters too. A scissor lift needs room for a technician to walk around all four corners of the vehicle, plus room for the pump unit and hose reach. We recommend at least 30 inches of walk space on both long sides and 40 inches at the ends. In his 12-foot-wide stall with a Bronco that is about 76 inches wide at the mirrors, he had 34 inches of side clearance per side. Tight but workable. If it had been tighter, we would have suggested folding mirrors or a narrower vehicle plan.
What Overlanders Need Underneath the Truck
Overlanded rigs are unusually hard on portable lifts because everything underneath is bolted to the frame. Rock sliders, skid plates, dual battery mounts, tank guards, and long-range fuel cells all crowd the standard pad locations. Before we pick any lift for a build like this, we get under the truck with a tape measure and identify the four cleanest contact points. On his Bronco, we ended up using two frame rails behind the front tires and two behind the rear axle, avoiding the sliders entirely.
Pad height matters as much as pad location. Overland builds usually have added ride height from long-travel suspension or bigger tires, which means the lift arms may need to extend more than the manufacturer’s default configuration. We picked a scissor with adjustable pad extensions so he could raise them to reach the frame without the arms fully extending. Those adjustable locks click every couple of inches, so you can stop the arms exactly where the frame is, not one inch high or low. That flexibility is a big reason we favor a portable automotive scissor lift over cheaper pinch-weld units for anyone running a real overland or off-road build with custom armor. The pinch-weld pads on cheaper units simply do not clear the armor.
Delivery from Ames to Southern Minnesota
Portable does not mean lightweight. A mid-rise scissor still weighs around 1,400 to 1,800 pounds depending on model, so freight and unloading matter. We ran his lift up from Ames on our own truck, which let us position it exactly where he wanted it inside the stall rather than dropping it in the driveway on a common carrier pallet. That saved him one heavy-move headache. His floor slab was a healthy six inches of reinforced concrete, and we confirmed that number with a rebar scanner before we let him roll a loaded lift across it.
Setup on-site was straightforward. We plugged the pump into a standard 220-volt circuit, cycled it a couple of times empty, then did a partial-load test with a spare pickup he had sitting outside. The full first-cycle inspection, load test, and safety walk took about ninety minutes. He signed the paperwork on the hood of his truck and we were back on the road to Ames before dinner. If your shop is anywhere within reasonable driving distance of central Iowa, we usually deliver on our own vehicles rather than freight, which keeps damage rates low and gives you a real installer on-site day one.
Ongoing Maintenance for a Portable Automotive Scissor Lift
These units are simple mechanically but they still need attention. Every 90 days, check hydraulic fluid level and inspect the hoses for weeping. Every six months, cycle the lift through its full travel range unloaded and listen for hesitation in the scissor legs. Every year, have a certified inspector look at the safety locks, ratchet pawls, and any welds on the platform. We do these annual inspections for customers across Iowa and southern Minnesota as part of our service program, and it is the single cheapest way to keep a portable automotive scissor lift running for two decades instead of one.
The Minnesota customer is a year in now and the lift is still humming. He has had it up and down probably 200 cycles. He reported one minor issue in month four: a slow drift in the down direction while parked, which turned out to be a check valve that we replaced under warranty in a single visit. That is why buying from a real installer matters more than saving a few hundred dollars on an unknown import brand. When the check valve fails on a no-name lift, you become the parts sourcing department, and that is a job nobody wants. Our customer went back to building his truck, which was the point of buying the portable automotive scissor lift in the first place.
