Start With The Ceiling, Not The Budget

Every restoration shop wants to start the conversation at price. We insist on starting with a tape measure. Go to the bay where the lift will live and measure to the lowest obstruction — the bottom of the truss chord, the garage door track when the door is open, the pull chain on a ceiling fan, or the fluorescent light fixture. That number is your working ceiling. A car on a mid-rise scissor lift will occupy roughly the height of the car plus about four feet of lift stroke.

For most CV axle and half-shaft work, you don’t need the wheels off the ground at chest height. You need the underbody at working reach, which is usually 36 to 48 inches of clear space underneath. Door Swing And Bay Approach

A sectional overhead door tucks flat to the ceiling but the track hardware still lives in the airspace above the vehicle. Approach depth matters for portable units specifically because you often want to roll the lift out of the way at the end of the day. Most portable mid-rises are around 78 to 92 inches long by 42 to 48 inches wide in the collapsed position, and they weigh six to nine hundred pounds. On a smooth concrete floor with casters they roll cleanly, but through a doorway with a threshold, plan the path.

CV Axle And Half-Shaft Access

CV axle work has specific access requirements that a portable can either help or hurt with. The wheel needs to come off. The hub needs to spin freely. The nut on the axle end needs to break loose without a helper. On a frame-engaging portable, the suspension hangs at full droop when the vehicle is lifted, which is actually what you want for axle work — it opens the boot travel and gives you a clear pull on the shaft.

What you do not want is a runway-style lift for CV work, because the wheels are still loaded on the platform and you cannot get the hub free without a rolling jack. If restoration is your main workflow and CV or brake jobs are frequent, a portable mid-rise scissor with frame engagement is the right architecture. If storage is the main use with occasional service, a portable four-post with a bridge jack is a different but valid answer. That works for a Miata restoration or a vintage Mustang; it does not work for a modern half-ton. We are also cautious about grey-market brands at the bottom of the range because the safety hardware, the cylinder quality, and the ALI certification status vary wildly. Budget Tier Two: Mid-Rise Scissor Range

The mid-rise scissor is the workhorse of the portable category for restoration shops. Capacities run 6,000 to 9,000 pounds. Lift heights top out at about 48 inches. Lock notches click every two to two and a half inches so you can pick your working height, which restoration guys love because a tall guy and a short guy can each set the lift where their back is happy. The frame-engaging arms swing under most passenger cars and light trucks and pick them up at the factory lift points.

This tier is where we send most restoration buyers. The value-per-hour math on a mid-rise scissor beats both the low-rise and the full 2-post for a shop that works on a mix of vehicles across a day. Freight is manageable — a common carrier delivers it curbside on a pallet, and if you have a forklift or a tractor with forks you can offload it yourself. Budget Tier Three: Rolling Four-Post Systems

At the top of the portable range are rolling four-post lifts. These are essentially home-storage four-posts with wheeled subframes that let you reposition the whole assembly. Capacity is typically 8,000 to 9,000 pounds. Runways are long enough for full-size pickups. The advantage over a scissor is drive-on convenience and the ability to store a vehicle on top overnight. The disadvantage is the wheels are still loaded when the lift is up, so wheel-off work requires a bridge jack accessory.

For a restoration shop that stores project cars between work sessions, this tier can be the right answer even at a higher price. Rolling casters let you push the whole loaded lift into a corner when the bay needs to be clear for something else. The downside is weight — a rolling four-post loaded with a project car is a serious mass to move on casters, and the concrete needs to be dead flat and smooth. If your floor slopes even a quarter inch across the bay, a loaded rolling lift is a bad idea. Putting The Decision Tree Together

The decision tree runs three checks in order. First, ceiling height at the working position determines whether a mid-rise or a full-height lift is even an option. Second, work mix determines which architecture — pad lift, scissor, or rolling four-post — matches your daily jobs. Third, budget determines which specific model within the correct architecture is the right buy. Skipping steps one or two and going straight to budget is how restoration shops end up with the wrong equipment.
