If you run an EV specialty shop in Sioux City and you’re weighing a portable car lift for home garage exhaust and driveline access — because EVs still have driveline, they just don’t have exhaust — you’ve probably read some things online that don’t match reality. This piece lines up seven of them, calls each one out, and gives you the honest answer. EV work is heavier on average than ICE work because the packs weigh a lot. That single fact drives half these myths.

Myth One: You Need a Commercial Bolt-Down Lift for EVs

The pitch you’ll hear from some dealers is that EV weight demands a bolt-down commercial lift and portable is not up to the job. That’s technically wrong. A quality portable car lift for home garage rated at 9,000 or 10,000 pounds handles most EVs on the road today — Model 3 curb weight is around 4,000 pounds, Model Y around 4,400, Ford Mach-E around 4,900. Even a Rivian R1T at 7,000-plus is within a 9,000-lb portable rating.

Where the myth has some truth: the F-150 Lightning at 6,500 pounds and heavier battery-electric trucks are pushing what a home-tier 9,000-lb portable is comfortable with. If your shop specializes in the biggest EVs, a 12,000-lb rated portable is honest. But saying “portable can’t do EVs” is marketing, not physics. We sell portables to EV-focused shops routinely. What matters is buying the capacity above your heaviest expected vehicle by at least 20%. Don’t undersize because the sticker looks nice. And don’t oversize by 200% because a dealer scared you. Match the rating to the work and you’re fine on a portable for the majority of EV service.

Myth Two: Your 4-Inch Slab Isn’t Strong Enough

Sioux City home garages are largely 4-inch slabs with wire mesh from builders since about 2010. Older neighborhoods run 3.5 to 4 inches without mesh. The internet will tell you a 4-inch slab isn’t enough for a car lift. The honest answer is more nuanced.

A portable car lift for home garage in scissor or mobile 4-post form transfers load through its footprint. A 9,000-lb 4-post with a 4,500-lb EV parked on it exerts about 3,375 pounds per column foot. That’s within the capacity of a well-cured 4-inch slab of 3,000 PSI concrete. Rebar or mesh is a plus but not required for a portable — you’re not anchoring, so the concrete just has to bear point loads without cracking. Where 4 inches is genuinely marginal: a bolt-down commercial 2-post lifting an F-150 Lightning is a different math problem, and yes, that wants 5 inches with rebar. But a home garage portable, 4 inches is fine for the vast majority of EVs. Verify your slab thickness with a hammer drill before you buy. If yours is genuinely 3 inches, we’ll steer you toward a scissor that spreads load. Otherwise, the myth is oversold. Your slab is probably fine.

Myth Three: Portable Means Wobbly and Unsafe

Because a portable car lift for home garage isn’t anchored, some buyers assume it must be shakier than a bolt-down lift. That’s a misread of what “anchored” does. Anchors resist lateral tipping in extreme cases — usually when someone loads a lift beyond capacity or off-center. A properly leveled, capacity-rated portable sitting on shims on a flat slab is dimensionally the same rigidity as an anchored lift for normal-use loads.

What matters more than anchoring is the mechanical lock system. Every quality lift, portable or bolt-down, has locks that engage at set positions and physically hold the platform if hydraulics fail. On a mid-rise scissor, locks click every two to two-and-a-half inches through the rise. On a 4-post, locks land at fixed positions along the columns. When you’re under the car, the locks are holding you up, not the hydraulics. Never trust hydraulics alone. Never bypass locks. That safety discipline applies to any lift regardless of anchor status. A portable installed correctly and used correctly is not less safe than a bolt-down. It IS less safe than a bolt-down if you cheap out on the shims and let the columns lean. Level it properly. Check locks before every use. Same as always.

Myth Four: EVs Don’t Need Underbody Access

People assume EVs are maintenance-free and underbody access doesn’t matter. That’s wrong on two counts. First, EVs still have driveline components: motors, reduction gearboxes, half-shafts, CV joints. Second, the battery pack itself sits under the vehicle and demands full clear access for inspection, service, and eventual replacement. A portable car lift for home garage in scissor form pins the scissor mechanism directly under the pack, which is where you’d need to be working.

For EV work, a mobile 4-post with clear underbody access is the honest configuration. You want to be able to walk under the car with a flashlight, inspect the pack casing for coolant weeps or impact damage, and access half-shafts without fighting the lift structure. A scissor’s compromised underbody access is a bigger deal for EV work than for ICE work because ICE work centers on the engine and transaxle; EV work centers on the pack. If you’re building an EV specialty shop and looking at portable lifts, the 4-post is the answer. Scissor works for tires and brakes but doesn’t work well for pack access. Match the config to the work.

Myth Five: Slab Rebar Is Non-Negotiable

Sioux City buyers hear “rebar” from every online forum and assume no rebar means no lift. That’s not how a portable works. Rebar is critical for bolt-down installs because the anchor bolts pull against the concrete under load, and rebar prevents cracking radiating from the anchor. For a portable, there are no anchor bolts. The concrete is just bearing weight in compression, and 3,000-PSI concrete in compression at 4 inches thick is plenty for a home-portable footprint.

Where rebar helps a portable: if your slab has existing cracks, rebar keeps the cracks from getting wider under load. If your slab is uncracked, rebar is a plus but not required. Test your slab. If you can drill a hole in a corner and hit rebar or mesh, great. If not, and the slab is 4 inches or more with no visible cracks, you’re fine for a portable car lift for home garage under a 9,000-lb load. This myth costs Sioux City buyers money because they assume they need to break up and re-pour the floor before buying. In 90% of cases, they don’t. Ask us before you swing a jackhammer. Real slabs are usually more capable than the internet says.

Myth Six: Exhaust and Driveline Are Easier on a 4-Post

Sort of, but with a caveat. A mobile 4-post gives clear underbody access, so exhaust and driveline access is unobstructed. Great for ICE cars. For EVs, exhaust doesn’t exist, but driveline still does — half-shafts, reduction gearboxes, sub-frames. The 4-post’s clear underbody is genuinely better for that work.

The caveat: a 4-post with the car on the platform holds the wheels ON the platform, which is fine for driveline but not fine for half-shaft removal where you want the control arms to swing. For that, you need rolling jacks. So the honest answer is: a 4-post with rolling jacks is the ideal config for EV underbody work. A 4-post without jacks is fine for pack inspection but tight for half-shaft work. A scissor is fine for tires and brakes and rough for anything else. If you’re an EV shop, spec the 4-post with jacks from day one. Don’t add jacks later — you’ll want them on day one and every day after. That’s the config we quote most Sioux City EV shops on.

Myth Seven: Portable Costs the Same as Commercial

Some dealers price portable and commercial lifts within 10% of each other, which leads buyers to assume there’s no meaningful cost difference. That’s not the market. A quality portable car lift for home garage is genuinely cheaper than an equivalent commercial 2-post or heavy commercial 4-post — not by a giant margin, but by enough that it matters on a home-shop budget.

What you’re paying less for: less steel in the columns, fewer certifications required (some portables aren’t ALI Gold, though the good ones are), lower manufacturing cost because volume is higher in the home segment. What you’re paying the same for: hydraulics, cables, cylinders, and controls — those are commodity parts across the lift industry. If you see a portable priced identically to a commercial lift, either the portable is overbuilt or the commercial is a lower tier. Ask for the actual spec sheet. In our Iowa market, portable pricing sits meaningfully below equivalent commercial because that’s how the manufacturers structure it. Don’t overpay because you assume portable is cheap and commercial is expensive automatically. Do the actual comparison. Call us and we’ll price both configs side by side.
