A tire and alignment shop owner in the Des Moines metro asked us this spring about running a portable scissor lift car for the restoration side project he has been growing on nights and weekends. He has always loved old cars — 1970s Camaros and Chevelles specifically — and he takes on three or four projects a year on top of his day business. He wanted a lift that could pull double duty: fast tire work in the day, patient restoration work at night. We spent an afternoon walking his shop, talking through brand history, parts pipeline, and the safety rules that keep a restoration guy alive when there is a rusted floor pan hanging over his head.

A Des Moines shop’s restoration side project

This owner has been in tires and alignment for 22 years. He knows lifts. What he did not know as well was what has changed in the mid-rise market over the last decade. Restoration work is different from tire work; you spend hours under the same car, sometimes with the car partially disassembled, and the safety margins have to be a lot bigger than they need to be for a quick R&R on wheels. A portable scissor lift car gave him a way to keep his production two-posts working the day business while a project car sat on the mid-rise in the back of the shop for weeks at a time.

He was not going to tie up a bay with a Chevelle on a two-post; he needed his columns free. But a mid-rise, wheeled into the back corner, could hold a project car for as long as it took him to strip, patch, weld, prime, and reassemble. The other appeal was the low pad footprint. Restoration cars sometimes come to him on trailers with rusted-out floors and no wheels at all. Rolling a partial car onto pad contact is easier than trying to align a two-post’s arms against a chassis that has no reference points left. He wanted the flexibility. We showed him what to look for and what to walk away from.

Brand history in the portable mid-rise market

The portable mid-rise market matured in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Before that, most portable options were pit jacks or drive-on ramps. The first generation of true portable scissor lifts came out of Italy and Germany for European workshop use, where bay space is scarce and the industry adopted mid-rises earlier than the U.S. did. In the past 15 years, U.S. and Chinese manufacturers have both caught up in build quality, though we still recommend certain established brands for restoration work specifically because their spare-parts pipelines have historically been more reliable for older models.

Rotary and Challenger both produce solid mid-rise units for the U.S. commercial market; BendPak and Atlas cover the home and light-shop tier. For a portable scissor lift car in a hybrid shop like this Des Moines owner’s, we generally recommend Rotary or Challenger, because if a hydraulic seal or a lock spring fails in year six, you want to be able to call and get the part on the shelf. Chinese-import brands are cheaper up front but the parts pipeline dries up quickly if the importer changes distributors, and we have seen customers stranded on a $6,000 lift because a $40 relief valve was unobtainable. Spend the extra up front and buy the lift you will still be able to service in 10 years. That is the honest history lesson.

Parts pipeline and how long support lasts

Restoration work often outlives the original warranty. The car this owner started in year one is still on his lift in year four. He needs a portable scissor lift car that will still be supported when he calls in year eight. Rotary and Challenger both stock parts for units up to 15 years old, which means a mid-rise you buy today should be serviceable through the mid-2040s. That is the baseline we set for restoration buyers. Cables — the flat lift cables that carry the load on some scissor designs — are the most common consumable, and we stock replacement sets for the mainstream brands.

Hydraulic seals are usually five to eight years, depending on how hard the shop runs the lift. Lock springs are longer. Power packs typically go the full life of the lift with no replacement needed. For this owner’s Rotary mid-rise, we walked him through the exploded parts diagram at delivery so he could see for himself what would need attention over time and roughly when. That is a conversation we have with every restoration buyer because these customers keep lifts longer than production shops do. Safety walkthrough before the first raise

Restoration work is exactly the wrong kind of work to be casual about safety. You are under the car for hours, sometimes with the exhaust and driveline removed, weight distributions shifting as parts come off, and welding sparks landing on hydraulic hoses. We do a formal safety walkthrough with every portable scissor lift car we sell to a restoration customer. Rule one: engage the mechanical lock every single time before you get under the car. Not sometimes. Every time. Rule two: after removing large components — a rear axle, an engine, a fuel tank — reset your pad positions if the car’s center of gravity has shifted.

What was a balanced load pre-teardown may be an off-center load post-teardown. Rule three: never leave a car up overnight without lockout. That is a personal preference for us but we push it hard. Rule four: keep the hydraulic reservoir topped and clean; a seal that fails at rest can bleed pressure overnight and settle the load onto the locks — the locks will hold, but the settle is noisy and terrifying and it means your seals need service. Rule five: no open flame within eight feet of the hydraulic lines when welding. Use a fire blanket. Rule six: keep the pad rubbers clean; a greasy pad can slip on a painted frame when torque is applied. These are boring rules and they save lives.

Lock engagement and lowering rules for restoration work

The number one difference between a portable scissor lift car and a fixed two-post for safety purposes is that the mid-rise has locks on both sides of the scissor mechanism, not on columns. You raise the lift, hear the click-click-click of the lock pawl passing each position, and when you release the raise handle the load settles onto the nearest lock below. Every two to two and a half inches. That is what the customer we spoke to on the phone asked about — is it all the way up or nothing. The answer is no, there are lock positions all the way through the stroke.

For restoration, this granularity means you can set the exact height for the piece of work you are doing. Under-body seam sealing at 24 inches. Front subframe rebuild at 32 inches. Full-height reassembly at 44 inches. Move up, drop onto the lock, work, lower, move down, drop onto the next lock, work again. The lowering rule for restoration is: never release a lock while your body is under the car. Roll clear first. This sounds obvious and it is exactly the rule that gets broken because you have a wrench in your hand and it seems easier to reach the lever from where you are. Do not do it. Reach with a stick, or crawl out and reach the lever standing.

Wheel-free lifting for chassis restoration

Restoration cars often need wheels-free access — the wheels come off during the strip-down and the car has to be held by the frame for months. A standard portable scissor lift car holds by pinch-weld pads under the rocker, which is a frame-pickup point, so wheels-free is inherent in the design. That is a big advantage over a drive-on lift for restoration. But you need to think about what happens when the wheels come off and stay off. The car’s weight distribution is now entirely on the four pad points. That is fine at first. It becomes less fine as you strip out the engine, the transmission, the fuel tank, the axle.

Every major component you pull changes the center of gravity, and if the four pads are not re-checked for even loading, you can end up with two pads carrying most of the load and two barely engaged. That is a slip risk. Every 40 hours of work under a stripped car, we tell restoration customers to lower to the lowest lock, walk around the perimeter, look at each pad, and confirm even pressure by trying to slide each pad rubber with your hand. If one slides freely, that pad is not loaded, and you need to re-raise and re-position. Boring, careful, essential. This is the discipline that keeps a restoration shop out of a wrongful-death lawsuit ten years down the road.

When to push customers to a full four-post instead

Not every restoration shop should buy a portable scissor lift car. For long-project restoration work — a car that will sit on a lift for six months or a year while it is stripped, welded, primed, painted, and reassembled — a four-post lift is often the better choice. Four-posts hold at the wheels, which means the car can sit safely with all suspension components removed and the frame supported by the runways. Storage-tier four-posts are also cheaper per foot of car than a mid-rise if you have the ceiling clearance.

We push customers to four-posts when their pattern is one-car-at-a-time, months-long, and low turnover. We push customers to mid-rises when the pattern is many projects, short turnaround, mixed with production tire or brake work, and where the lift needs to roll out of the way. This Des Moines owner is a hybrid case — production during the day, restoration at night — and the mid-rise was the right call for him.
