Deck length and vehicle overhang

The single most-asked spec on a portable scissor lift car is deck length, because it determines what vehicles will straddle the pads without hanging axles off the ends. Commercial-duty portables typically run deck lengths between 60 and 78 inches, with the longer-deck versions built specifically for full-size pickups and SUVs. A dealership flex bay handling a mix of sedans, crossovers, and half-ton pickups wants the longer deck — the extra length costs little and buys you every vehicle in the lineup. Overhang is not automatically dangerous, but it changes the load distribution across the pads and shortens the safety margin. Match deck length to the longest wheelbase you expect to service, not the average. On the Ames dealership brief, we recommended the longer deck for exactly this reason.

Deck width and pad reach for daily maintenance

Deck width matters for pad reach. A portable scissor lift car with a wider deck gives you more lateral pad-position flexibility, which matters when you are servicing a mix of vehicles with different frame widths. Some units have fixed pads at set positions on the deck; others give you adjustable pads with pinned positions. Adjustable is better for a dealer flex bay because the vehicle mix is not uniform. Width also affects how you approach the lift — a narrower unit sits between the frame rails of most vehicles, while a wider unit engages closer to the pinch-weld lift points. For daily maintenance on late-model vehicles, the wider-deck adjustable-pad unit is the right pick, and it is what we spec into dealer flex bays every time.

Stowed height, cycled height, and the ceiling calculation

Stowed height on a portable scissor lift car with a vehicle removed is typically 4 to 6 inches — low enough to slide most vehicles over without ramps, though ramps are still recommended for anything low. Cycled to full extension the pad height reaches roughly 42 to 48 inches on mid-rise units, higher on full-rise commercial portables. To calculate ceiling clearance you need: full pad height, plus vehicle height, plus a safety buffer. On a Toyota Sienna at 68 inches vehicle height on a 46-inch pad, you land at 114 inches, and you want 12 to 18 inches of buffer above that. A 12-foot ceiling clears any half-ton pickup or minivan on a mid-rise portable comfortably. If the ceiling is lower, the spec still works, but we would double-check your tallest vehicle before we quote.

Freight pallet dimensions and the semi problem

A portable scissor lift car ships palletized on a heavy-duty skid, typically 48 by 48 inches, sometimes 60 by 48. Crated gross weight lands in the 900-to-1,400-pound range depending on model. That freight moves LTL from our Iowa warehouse, and it goes on a standard 53-foot dry van. The Ames dealership has a proper service-drive lane and a receiving area, so the semi backing in was not a concern. Your shop’s approach geometry might be. If a 53-footer cannot swing into your receiving area, tell us before we schedule — we can crossdock at an Ames-area terminal and you can bring your own trailer. Getting the semi conversation right on the front end avoids the single most common delivery-day problem we see.

Forklift capacity and unloading the crate

You need a forklift or a skid-steer with pallet forks rated above the crated gross weight to pull the pallet off the trailer. A 4,000-pound-class warehouse forklift handles it easily. A 3,000-pound-class handles it if you are careful about the load center. What we see fail is people trying to use a cheap furniture dolly or a manual pallet jack to get the crate through a service-drive door. It will not work. The pallet weight, combined with the height of the load center off the ground, wants a real machine. If your bay does not have a forklift, tell us and we will scope out how to handle it — sometimes we send our own forklift with the install team, sometimes we crossdock so you can rent one locally for the day.

Electrical and hydraulic connections at commissioning

Most commercial-duty portable scissor lift car units run on 220V single-phase, 15 to 20 amps. Some run on 110V with reduced cycle speed — slower but usable. The Ames dealership already had 220V drops at every bay, so we did not need any electrical work. If your bay is 110V-only, we can spec around it, but the cycle time will be slower and you will feel that in a high-throughput dealer flex bay. Hydraulic reservoirs ship with fluid, but we top them off and cycle the lift through its bleed procedure at commissioning. Full bleed takes about an hour if the shipment sat cold or shifted in transit. Skipping the bleed is how you get a soft feel and premature seal wear.

The complete Ames dealership install day

Delivery landed on a Tuesday morning. The dealership’s own forklift pulled the crate off the LTL trailer and staged it in the flex bay. Uncrate took twenty minutes. Rolled the portable scissor lift car into position, plugged it into the 220V drop, bled the hydraulic system, cycled through the safety-lock positions, and load-tested with a shop courtesy car. Total on-site time was three hours and change. The service manager’s takeaway was that the freight and forklift logistics were the biggest planning item, not the lift itself. If you get the crate off the trailer and into the bay, the rest is fast. Get that piece right and your commissioning day is a half-day of one tech, not a two-day install like a permanent lift.
