If you run an EV specialty shop in the Des Moines metro and you’re about to order a portable scissor lift for suspension and shock work, the equipment itself is rarely the hard part — getting it off the truck in one piece is. We’ve watched more install days go sideways over freight logistics than over anything mechanical, and most of it comes down to a handful of avoidable myths shop owners believe right up until the truck is sitting in their parking lot with no way to unload it. Myth #1: “It’s Portable, So It’s Light”
The word “portable” trips people up. A portable scissor lift rated for EV curb weights — many EVs push 4,500 to 6,000 lbs thanks to battery packs — is not a one-person, roll-it-off-the-tailgate item. These units typically ship on a pallet at 700 to 1,200 lbs depending on capacity and deck length, strapped down, sometimes in a partial crate. That’s a commercial freight shipment, full stop. Shops that assume they can horse it off a straight truck by hand end up either damaging the lift’s hydraulic lines or, worse, someone gets hurt trying to muscle it down a ramp that was never meant to hold that kind of weight.
We tell every EV shop the same thing before they place an order: know your curb weight class and buy the lift rated appropriately, then plan the unload around that real weight, not the marketing word “portable.” A lift that’s portable once it’s positioned in your bay is a completely different thing from a lift that’s easy to get off a truck. Treat the freight leg as its own project.
Myth #2: “Any Loading Dock Works”
Not every Des Moines metro shop has a dock, and even shops that do often assume any dock height and any pallet jack will do the job. Freight carriers deliver on standard 53-foot trailers with lift gates or dock-height trailers, and the difference matters. If your bay doesn’t have a dock, you need a lift gate truck specified at time of booking — not discovered as a surprise when the driver shows up without one. We’ve had EV shops schedule installs assuming the freight company would “figure it out,” and instead the truck leaves with the lift still on it because there was no safe way to get it down.
Pallet jacks also have limits on uneven or gravel surfaces, which some shop parking lots have plenty of. If your dock or unload area isn’t smooth concrete, plan on a forklift rental or ask us about coordinating drop-ship to a location that has one. Getting this sorted during the ordering call, not delivery day, is what separates a smooth install from a lost afternoon.
Myth #3: “A Pallet Jack Is the Same as a Forklift”
A pallet jack moves weight across a flat, hard surface for short distances. A forklift lifts, tilts, and maneuvers weight up stairs-worth of height and around obstacles. Shops doing suspension and shock replacement on EVs often need the lift moved from the dock into a specific bay, sometimes around a corner, sometimes up a slight grade into the shop. That’s forklift territory, not pallet jack territory. We’ve seen technicians try to wrestle a crated portable scissor lift down a hallway with a pallet jack, only to get it stuck at a doorway threshold that a forklift would have cleared without issue.
If you don’t own a forklift, most equipment rental yards in the Des Moines metro carry them by the day, and it’s a minor cost compared to the risk of dropping a lift or damaging your floor. We routinely tell customers to rent a forklift for install day even if they think they can manage without one — the couple hundred dollars is cheap insurance against a bent frame or a strained back.
Myth #4: “Freight Damage Is Rare, So I Don’t Need to Inspect”
Freight damage on hydraulic equipment is more common than most first-time buyers expect, especially on longer hauls. Bent lift arms, cracked hydraulic fittings, and scraped paint happen more than shops want to admit. The mistake is signing the delivery receipt as “clear” without actually inspecting the crate or pallet first. Once you sign clear, filing a freight claim becomes far harder, and the carrier has no obligation to make it right.
Before the driver leaves, walk the pallet, check for shifted straps, cracked crating, or visible bends in the frame. If anything looks off, note it on the delivery receipt in writing before you sign. We advise every shop ordering a portable scissor lift to take photos during unload regardless of condition — it protects you if a hidden issue shows up once you start using it for shock and suspension work a week later.
Myth #5: “Setup Doesn’t Need a Plan Either”
Getting the crate off the truck is only half the battle — getting the portable scissor lift positioned, leveled, and ready for EV suspension work is the other half. Many low-profile scissor lifts need a flat, level slab to operate safely, and older shop floors settle unevenly over the years. We recommend checking your floor with a level before the truck ever shows up, not after the lift is sitting in the bay and rocking slightly under load.
Cabling, hydraulic hose runs, and power hookups for battery or electric-hydraulic models also need planning ahead of time. Shops that treat unloading as the finish line often find themselves scrambling for an extension cord or a missing fitting on the same day they wanted to start doing shock jobs. A little planning before freight arrives saves a lot of scrambling after.
Myth #6: “Any Lift Works for EV Suspension Work Regardless of Reach Points”
EVs have different frame and pinch-weld geometry than combustion vehicles because of battery pack placement underneath. A portable scissor lift bought without checking reach point compatibility can leave technicians fighting the equipment during suspension and shock jobs instead of the vehicle. This isn’t strictly a freight issue, but it belongs in the same planning conversation, because once that lift is off the truck and set up, swapping it out is expensive and slow.

But when something goes wrong — a lift gate no-show, a damaged crate, a floor that isn’t level enough — having a local installer who knows the equipment matters.
