This shop’s issue is one we hear constantly from operations along the corridor: they had a permanent lift installed in their only real service stall, and it was excellent for the jobs it was built for, but it meant that stall couldn’t flex for anything bigger. Every time a larger trailer or RV needed the space to maneuver, tire rotation and wheel work on smaller trailers and tow vehicles had to wait or get pushed outside. The owner told us almost exactly what one customer wrote to us directly — the harder he thought about it, the harder it was to justify tying up the one flexible bay he had with a fixed lift he couldn’t move.

The other layout change was less obvious: they widened the aisle leading to that parking spot by about a foot, just enough that the lift could be walked in at an angle without a three-point turn every time. Height Locks and Why They Mattered More Than Expected

One detail that mattered more in daily use than the shop initially expected was the height lock spacing on the scissor lift. Tire and wheel work doesn’t always need max lift height — sometimes a tech just needs the wheel a few inches off the ground to break it loose and swap it, and running the lift all the way up every time wastes cycle time. This unit locks in roughly every two to two and a half inches of travel, so techs learned quickly to set it at the lowest useful height for straightforward tire swaps and reserve full height for wheel bearing or brake jobs that need more working room underneath.

That intermediate locking also turned out to matter for mixed trailer heights. Looking back at the full year, the biggest lesson isn’t about the lift’s specs — it’s that a portable vehicle scissor lift only delivers on its flexibility if you actually plan the bay layout around it instead of treating it as a spare tool that lives wherever there’s room. Give it a real home base near the work it’ll do most often, widen the path to that spot if you need to, and make sure power or hydraulic access is right there so it doesn’t create new friction while solving the old bottleneck.

We’d also tell any RV or trailer shop weighing this decision to be honest about weight capacity and base stability before buying — tow vehicles and loaded trailers vary a lot more in weight than typical passenger cars, and a scissor lift sized for sedans won’t hold up under a loaded axle.
