Configuration A: New OEM Ramp Rollers, Full Set
The first configuration we see fleet operators consider is a full replacement of all eight ramp rollers per runway with new OEM parts, matched to the exact model number stamped on the lift. This is the safer route if the lift sees daily seasonal loading and unloading of pickups, cube vans, or equipment trailers, because new rollers have a fresh bearing surface and haven’t developed the flat spots that cause a vehicle to hunt or drift while driving up. We typically quote this as a full set even when only one or two rollers are visibly worn, because the ones sitting next to a bad roller are usually close behind it, and doing them all at once means one service call instead of three over the next two winters.
The tradeoff is cost and lead time. A full set plus the cross rail chain and pulley pins if those are also due is a bigger invoice than a quick spot fix, and depending on the brand it may take a few days to arrive. For a fleet storing a dozen vehicles for the season, though, we’ve found operators who go this route rarely call us back mid-winter with a stuck or jumping ramp. If your lift is under a service contract or still within a parts warranty window, new OEM ramp rollers are almost always the right call — don’t void coverage chasing a cheaper used part.
Configuration B: Used or Take-Off Ramp Rollers
The second configuration is buying used ramp rollers pulled from a lift that’s being decommissioned or upgraded. We understand the appeal — a fleet operator watching every dollar during a slow season doesn’t want to spend on rollers if the lift is only used to store equipment for four or five months a year and driven on gently. Used rollers can work fine short-term if the bearing inside still spins freely and the outer surface hasn’t developed a flat spot from sitting loaded and stationary for long stretches.
But here’s the catch we walk every caller through: you can’t just look at a used roller and know if the internal bearing is shot. A tech we work with put it plainly — the problem with cheap replacement rollers, new or used, is that a lot are made overseas now with a low-grade bearing pressed into the center. From the outside they look fine, but the bearing binds up under load, the roller stops turning freely, and it drags a flat spot into itself in a matter of weeks. If you’re buying used, you’re inheriting whatever wear cycle that roller already went through, and you have no way to verify it. For a fleet storing vehicles seasonally where a stuck roller means a truck won’t roll smoothly onto the runway when you need it in a hurry, that’s a real risk.
What Actually Fails First
Before you decide between new and used, it helps to know what actually wears out on a 4-post storage lift’s ramp assembly. It’s rarely the roller housing itself — it’s almost always the bearing inside it. Once that bearing seizes or gets sloppy, the roller quits spinning and starts sliding across the runway surface instead, which is exactly the friction that flat-spots a roller and makes the vehicle feel like it’s fighting the ramp on the way up.
We also see the equalizer chain and the two roller/bearings that the chain rides on go bad around the same time as the ramp rollers, especially on lifts that have been in service five-plus years. If you’re already pulling ramps apart to swap rollers, it costs very little extra labor to inspect the chain and its pulleys while everything is open. We quote these together often enough that it’s basically standard practice on any lift over that age — no point paying for a second service call next season for a part that was already sitting right next to the one you just replaced.
Why Southern Minnesota Winters Make This Worse
Cold weather is brutal on any bearing, and ramp rollers are no exception. Grease stiffens up in low temperatures, which means a roller that rolled freely in September can bind by January, right when a fleet operator is trying to get a plow truck or a piece of seasonal equipment off storage in a hurry. If your storage facility isn’t heated, that’s another point in favor of fresh rollers going into winter rather than betting on used parts that already have unknown wear.
We also hear from operators in southern Minnesota who store vehicles loaded and stationary for months at a time. A roller sitting under sustained weight without moving is more likely to develop a flat spot than one in regular rotation, so if your fleet’s storage pattern is load-in-October, unload-in-April, that static load is itself a stress test on whatever ramp rollers are already on the lift. Inspecting and replacing worn rollers before that static season starts is cheaper than discovering the problem when you’re trying to pull a truck off in a spring thaw hurry.
