Why the Lift Comes Before Anything Else
Every restoration shop setup we’ve helped build in Iowa starts with the same conversation: what are you actually lifting, and how are you lifting it? A 1967 Mustang shell with the engine and front clip already off doesn’t load a lift the same way a running-and-driving 3/4 ton pickup does. A restoration shop setup lives or dies on layout. We tell every customer the same thing: draw your workflow before you draw your walls. Teardown happens in one area, media blasting or paint stripping in another (with proper ventilation and containment), metal work and welding somewhere sparks won’t hit anything flammable, and final assembly and paint prep in a clean zone as far from the grinding dust as you can get it. Lifts should sit at the junction points of that flow, not crammed into a corner because it was the only open spot when the slab got poured.
We recommend at least 12-14 feet of ceiling clearance for a two-post in a serious restoration shop setup, more if you’re running an overhead hoist or engine crane nearby. Column spacing needs extra thought too — restoration bays often need wider drive-through clearance than a typical service shop because you’re moving trailers, rollbacks, and partially disassembled shells in and out constantly. Power, Air, and Slab Prep
Nothing derails a restoration shop setup faster than discovering the concrete or electrical won’t support the equipment you actually bought. Two-post and four-post lifts need a specific minimum slab thickness and cure time, and older Iowa buildings — especially converted ag buildings and old dealership service bays — often have thinner or cracked slabs that won’t hold anchors reliably. We test the slab before we quote a lift, every time, because a bent anchor bolt six months in is a much bigger problem than a delayed install.
Air and electrical planning matters just as much. Media blasting, plasma cutters, air tools, and paint booths all draw serious current and CFM, and a restoration shop setup that treats those as an afterthought ends up with tripped breakers and empty air tanks mid-project. Plan your electrical panel capacity and compressor sizing around your full equipment list up front, not lift by lift as you buy things.
Tooling Beyond the Lift

Frame racks, engine stands, media blast cabinets, and welding tables all need dedicated space that doesn’t compete with your lift bays. Storage matters too — parts bins, fastener organization, and a clean area for small trim and glass pieces keep a restoration project from turning into a scavenger hunt three months in.
