Why Slab Thickness Matters More for Heavy-Duty Work

A rolling jack rated for heavy-duty transmission service concentrates a lot of weight onto a small caster footprint, and repeated point loading is exactly what cracks undersized concrete over time. Light-duty shops running four to six inch slabs on light passenger vehicles rarely have an issue. Heavy-duty truck shops running the same slab thickness under an RJ 15 handling transmissions from Class 6 through Class 8 trucks are a different story — we’ve seen slabs crack and heave within a year or two when the concrete wasn’t specified for the actual load.

For heavy-duty applications, we generally recommend six to eight inches of properly cured concrete at minimum in the jack’s working footprint, more if the shop is also running heavy two-post or four-post lifts in the same area with overlapping load paths. This isn’t a number we pull from a chart and hand over — we look at your specific truck weight class, how often the jack will be loaded to capacity, and what else is anchored nearby before recommending a thickness, because over-speccing costs money you don’t need to spend and under-speccing costs you a cracked floor and a rolling jack that won’t sit level.

Rebar and Reinforcement: What’s Actually Needed

Rebar reinforcement is where we see the most disagreement between shop owners and concrete contractors who don’t do automotive work. A properly reinforced slab under heavy-duty rolling jack and lift equipment typically wants rebar on a grid spacing appropriate to the load, not just wire mesh, which is adequate for light foot traffic but undersized for concentrated equipment loads. The mistake we see most often is a contractor pouring a slab to general shop specifications without knowing heavy-duty automotive equipment is going in on top of it. If you’re building new or replacing an existing pad specifically for an RJ 15 and a heavy-duty lift, get the equipment specs to your concrete contractor before the pour, not after. Retrofitting reinforcement into an existing slab isn’t really possible — at that point you’re looking at removing and repouring the affected section, which costs significantly more than doing it right the first time.

Cost Breakdown: Jack, Concrete, and Everything Between

Here’s how the total cost of getting an RJ 15 running in a heavy-duty bay actually breaks down. The jack itself is one line item, and pricing varies by capacity and features, but for most heavy-duty truck shops it’s not the largest cost on the project. Concrete work, when a slab needs to be poured or replaced to handle the load, is frequently the bigger expense — site prep, forming, rebar material and labor, the pour itself, and cure time before equipment can be loaded onto it.

Beyond the jack and the slab, budget for air line runs to the jack’s location, any anchor bolts or pads required by the manufacturer, and labor for the actual installation and calibration once the concrete has cured. Shops that skip the cure-time step and load equipment onto fresh concrete too early are asking for cracking regardless of how well the slab was reinforced. Existing Slab vs. New Pour: Making the Call

Not every shop needs new concrete. If your existing slab is already six-plus inches with adequate reinforcement and in good condition — no existing cracking, no evidence of settling — you may be able to install an RJ 15 directly onto it with just anchor points and a level check. We test existing slabs during our site survey rather than assuming either way, because guessing wrong in either direction costs the shop owner money: unnecessary concrete work on one side, or a jack installed on inadequate concrete that fails within a year on the other.

For shops with an existing but marginal slab, there’s sometimes a middle option — a reinforced concrete pad poured within the existing floor specifically for the jack’s footprint, rather than repouring the entire bay. This costs less than a full slab replacement and can be the right call for a shop that’s otherwise happy with its floor but needs a stronger point under one specific piece of equipment. We’ll tell you honestly which situation you’re in rather than defaulting to recommending a full pour when a targeted pad would do the job.

Sequencing the Install Around Concrete Work

If concrete work is required, sequencing matters for minimizing shop downtime. We typically recommend ordering the rolling jack and any lift equipment well ahead of the concrete pour so everything arrives close to when the slab finishes curing, rather than pouring concrete and then waiting weeks for equipment to ship while a bay sits unusable. Cure time itself typically runs a minimum of several weeks before heavy equipment loading, longer in colder weather, which matters for shops near the Iowa-Missouri border planning work around winter conditions.

We also coordinate the installation crew’s schedule around the concrete contractor’s timeline so there isn’t a gap where the bay is finished but no one’s available to install and calibrate the jack. Before signing off on any RJ 15 installation quote, ask specifically what slab thickness and reinforcement the quote assumes, and whether that assumption is based on your actual truck weight class or a generic default. Ask whether the quote includes a site survey and load assessment, or whether it’s a flat-rate number that doesn’t account for your existing floor condition. We’ve seen shops get quoted a low number that didn’t include necessary concrete work, only to find out mid-project that the real cost was substantially higher once the floor was assessed properly.

Also ask about warranty terms on both the jack and any concrete work performed, and confirm who’s responsible for repairs if the slab underperforms after installation. A contractor who’s confident in their concrete specification should be willing to stand behind it. For heavy-duty shops making a real investment in equipment meant to handle Class 6 through Class 8 transmission work for years, getting these questions answered up front is worth the extra hour of conversation before you sign anything.
