What a Bridge Jack Actually Does on a Four-Post

A four-post lift holds the vehicle by its tires. That’s great for storage, oil changes, exhaust work, and alignments, but the moment you need a wheel off the ground you’re stuck. A bridge jack solves that by spanning the two runways on a rolling frame. You slide it under the pinch weld or frame rail, extend the pads, and lift the axle clear of the deck. Suspension work, brake jobs, wheel and tire service, differential drops — all of it opens up.

The frame rolls along the top or inside edge of the runways, so you can position it anywhere along the length of the lift. Most units are sold in pairs so you can go all four wheels free at once, which is how alignment shops run them. Single jacks work fine for a one-corner-at-a-time home shop. The lifting mechanism is either air-over-hydraulic or straight hydraulic with a hand pump, and travel is typically in the 8- to 18-inch range depending on the model. We tell folks to think of it as a floor jack that lives on the lift instead of on the ground — same job, no crawling, no cribbing, no reaching over the runway edge with a bottle jack balanced on a block of wood.

Rail Fit Is the Whole Ballgame

The number one mistake we see is somebody ordering a jack based on capacity alone and never checking the runway. Four-post lifts are not standardized. Runway width, outside-to-outside span, rail height, and whether the deck has a raised lip all vary by brand and model year. A jack built for a Rotary runway may not sit correctly on an older BendPak deck, and vice versa.

Before you buy, measure three things: the outside-to-outside distance across both runways, the inside-to-inside distance, and the height of the runway lip the jack frame will ride on. Then check whether your jack is fixed-width or adjustable. Adjustable-frame units cover a range and are the safer bet if you’re not certain, but they still have limits. Some four-post lifts also require an accessory rail kit or slider tracks before a jack will roll properly. If your lift came without that provision from the factory, adding it later is possible but it’s a real installation job, not a bolt-on. Capacity: Match the Jack to the Axle, Not the Lift

People assume a 12,000 lb lift needs 12,000 lb of jack. It doesn’t. A bridge jack lifts one axle, not the whole vehicle, and you’re never putting the full gross weight on a single pair of pads. Common ratings run from about 4,000 lb up through 7,500 lb per jack, with heavy-duty truck units going higher.

What you do need to check is the heaviest single axle you’ll ever service. A three-quarter-ton diesel pickup can put a serious load on the front axle with the engine sitting right there. Dually rear ends with a loaded bed are worse. If your shop sees fleet trucks, size up. If you’re a home-garage owner lifting a sedan, a muscle car, and a half-ton, a mid-range pair is plenty and you’ll appreciate the lighter frame when you’re sliding it by hand. Also look at minimum collapsed height. Low-slung cars — Corvettes, lowered imports, older sports cars — can bind against a tall jack frame before you ever get a pad under the pinch weld. Air-Over-Hydraulic vs. Manual Pump

Air-over-hydraulic is the shop standard for good reason. You tie into your compressed air line, hit the lever, and the jack comes up smooth and fast. In a production environment where a tech is doing eight brake jobs a day, the time savings is real and the reduced fatigue matters more than most people expect. The downside is you need air at the lift, and running a line to a four-post with a bridge jack usually means a coiled hose on a reel or an overhead drop.

Manual hydraulic pumps make sense for home garages without a compressor, or for shops where the jack gets used a few times a week rather than a few times an hour. They’re cheaper, there’s less to go wrong, and a hand pump seal kit is a simple repair. The tradeoff is pumping — a lot of pumping if you’re going a full 16 inches of travel with a truck on the pads. We generally recommend air-over for anything commercial and let home users decide based on whether they already have shop air. Either way, the hydraulic components are serviceable. We stock seals, pump assemblies, hoses, and release valves for the major brands, and if a jack loses pressure or drifts down it’s almost always a fixable seal issue rather than a replacement.

Adapters, Pads, and the Details That Save Rockers

The jack itself is only half the setup. Pad height and pad shape determine whether you’re lifting the vehicle safely or crushing a pinch weld. Most rolling jacks ship with a basic set of rubber or steel pads plus a couple of height extensions. That’s fine for trucks and older body-on-frame vehicles with obvious lift points.

Modern unibody cars are less forgiving. Pinch weld adapters with a slotted rubber insert are worth every penny — they cradle the seam instead of folding it over. EV owners need to be especially careful, because battery pack enclosures and reinforced sill sections dictate very specific lift points, and getting it wrong is an expensive mistake. Frame cradles help on lifted trucks and Jeeps where the factory point sits high and offset. We keep a good spread of adapters in stock and we’d rather sell you the right pad than replace a rocker panel. One more detail: keep an eye on your pad stack height. Every extension you add raises the collapsed height of the jack, which eats into your low-vehicle clearance. Buy the shortest stack that reaches your lift points comfortably.

Using Rolling Jacks for 4 Post Lifts Safely

Basic sequence, every time. Raise the four-post to a comfortable working height and set it down on its mechanical locks — never work off hydraulic pressure alone. Roll the jack into position under a manufacturer-designated lift point. Confirm both pads are square and fully seated before you pump. Raise only as far as you need, then check stability with a firm push on the fender before a wheel comes off.

Don’t roll the jack while it’s loaded. Don’t use one jack to lift diagonally opposite corners. Don’t exceed the jack’s rated capacity because “it’s only for a second.” And keep the runway surfaces clean — grease and brake dust on the rail edge make a loaded jack want to walk, which is exactly what you don’t want with a car in the air. Maintenance and Getting Help From Ames

Rolling jacks live a hard life. They get kicked, rolled over cords, and left extended with a load on them overnight. Give yours a five-minute look every month: check the hydraulic fluid level, look for weeping around the cylinder rod and hose fittings, inspect the roller wheels for flat spots, and make sure the pads aren’t cracked or torn. Grease the roller bearings once a season. Cycle the jack through full travel a few times if it’s been sitting, which keeps the seals from taking a set.
