What a Rolling Jack Actually Does on a Four-Post

A rolling bridge jack is a small hydraulic or air-over-hydraulic jack mounted on a sliding bridge that spans the two runways of your lift. You roll it under the vehicle to a lift point on the frame, pinch weld, or axle, then raise the jack to take the wheels off the runway. Now you have a suspended vehicle with free-hanging wheels while the lift itself carries the load at the corners. Brake jobs, tire rotations, wheel bearings, shocks, exhaust hangers, transmission service — none of that happens on a bare four-post.

The bridge rides on the inside top edge of each runway, so the runway profile dictates whether a given jack will fit. Most shops buy them in pairs so both axles can be off the deck at the same time, though we see plenty of single-jack setups in home garages where one axle at a time is fine. Four post lift rolling jacks are also what let a low-clearance shop skip a second lift entirely: instead of buying a two-post for wheel work, you add jacks to the drive-on you already own. That math works out in your favor almost every time, especially in older Iowa buildings where ceiling height rules out anything taller.

Runway Width, Slider Bars, and Why Fitment Fails

The single most common mistake we correct on the phone is somebody ordering jacks based on the lift’s capacity instead of its runway geometry. What matters is the clear inside distance between runways, the runway height and lip profile, and whether the lift was built with integrated slider tracks or needs bolt-on slider bars. A jack built for a 40-inch inside span will not sit on runways spaced 46 inches apart, and forcing it with spacers is how you get a jack that walks off the rail under load.

Before you order, measure three things and write them down: inside-to-inside runway distance at the middle of the lift, outside-to-outside width, and the height of the runway’s inner rail from the deck surface. Then tell us the lift brand, model, and roughly what year it was installed, because manufacturers changed runway extrusions over the years. Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas all have jacks matched to their own runway families, and some of those cross-fit to other brands with an adapter kit while others absolutely do not. Air-Over-Hydraulic vs. Manual Hydraulic

Nearly every commercial-grade bridge jack today is air-over-hydraulic: you feed it shop air, hit a lever or button, and an air motor drives the hydraulic pump. It is fast, it is one-handed, and in a production shop that time adds up over hundreds of wheel jobs. The trade-off is you need air plumbed to the lift, which in most Iowa shops is already there but in a residential garage often is not.

Manual hydraulic jacks — a foot pump or hand pump driving the same cylinder — cost less, need no compressor, and are perfectly reasonable for a home lift used a few weekends a month. They are slower and they demand more of your back. If you are a hobbyist restoring one car at a time, we usually steer you here and tell you to spend the difference on better lighting or a decent set of stands. If you are a shop, buy the air jacks; you will not regret it, and technicians will actually use them instead of dragging out a floor jack. Whichever style you choose, look for a jack with a mechanical lock or safety detent at height rather than one that relies purely on holding hydraulic pressure. Capacity Math Nobody Explains Correctly

Rolling jack capacity is not the same as lift capacity, and it is not additive in the way people assume. A pair of 7,000 lb jacks does not give you a 14,000 lb lifting device. Each jack is rated to lift one axle’s share of the load, and the governing number is whichever is lower: the jack rating, the lift’s rated capacity, or the runway load rating at the point where the bridge is parked.

In practice, a 9,000 lb four-post with 4,000–6,000 lb jacks handles cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups without drama. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks, dually rear axles, and cargo vans need heavier jacks — typically the 7,000 lb class — plus a lift rated 12,000 lb or better. Never center a single jack under a heavy vehicle and lift both axles at once. And watch the front-to-rear weight bias on trucks: a diesel front end can put far more than half the total weight on one jack. Installation, Air Lines, and Shop Layout

Installing bridge jacks on an existing four-post is usually a two-hour job if the lift was designed for them and a half-day if slider bars have to be added. The bars bolt or clamp to the inner runway rails, the bridges drop in from one end, and end stops keep them from rolling off. Air-operated units then need a hose reeled or routed so it does not snag under a moving bridge — we generally run a coiled line from a post-mounted FRL down to a quick coupler, keeping everything above the vehicle path.

Layout matters more than people expect. If your four-post is jammed against a wall, you lose the ability to work the jack handle from that side. Leave at least three feet of walk space on both sides and confirm the bridges can roll the full length of the runways without hitting the drive-on ramps or the cylinder. On lifts with a cross-tube at the front, the front bridge may be limited in travel, which occasionally means a specific vehicle wheelbase cannot be picked up cleanly. We check that during install and, if it is a problem, reposition the crossmember or spec a shorter bridge. Maintenance That Keeps Four Post Lift Rolling Jacks Safe

These jacks live in the dirtiest part of the shop — right under the vehicle, catching brake dust, road salt, and every drip. In Iowa, salt is the killer. Winter brine comes off vehicles onto the runways, collects on the slider bars, and turns smooth-rolling bridges into something you have to shoulder into position. Sweep and wipe the bars monthly, then hit them with a light film of grease or dry lube depending on how dusty your shop is.

Beyond that, the routine is short: inspect the rubber pads for cracks and replace them before they crumble, check the cylinder rod and hydraulic fittings for weeping, verify the jack holds height for several minutes without creeping, keep the reservoir topped with the correct hydraulic fluid, and confirm the end stops on both runways are still tight. Any jack that drifts down under load comes out of service until it is repaired — a sinking jack is not a maintenance item, it is a hazard. Add the jacks to your annual lift inspection so they get looked at by someone who knows what a failing cylinder sounds like.

Buying New Together vs. Adding Jacks Later

If you are still shopping for the lift itself, buy the jacks at the same time. Fitment is guaranteed, the freight ships on one pallet, and the installer sets everything up in a single visit instead of coming back. Bundled pricing on the jacks is also generally better than buying them as a standalone accessory a year later.

That said, adding them later is completely normal and we do it constantly — a homeowner buys a four-post for storage, discovers they want to do their own brakes, and calls us the next spring. The retrofit path is straightforward as long as the lift is a mainstream model with available slider bars. Where it gets expensive is orphan or discontinued lifts, where a universal jack plus custom bars can approach the cost of a used lift. In those cases we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.
