Why Ramps Weren’t Cutting It Anymore for Brake Work

Before the install, this shop was doing brake service and rotor swaps the hard way — drive-on ramps for trailers, a floor jack and stands for anything that needed real wheel-off access, and a lot of crawling around on a creeper to get at rotors and calipers. It worked, technically, but it was slow, and slow brake work on a trailer with dual axles adds up fast when you’re billing hourly and the customer is waiting on their rig to hit the road.

The tipping point came during a stretch of RV season when the shop had three trailers backed up waiting on brake service simultaneously. There simply wasn’t a fast way to get all four corners in the air on any of them without tying up every jack and stand in the building. That’s when the owner called us about a rotary 2-post lift — not because ramps had failed outright, but because the shop had outgrown them for the volume of rotor and brake work coming through the door.

The Site Survey: Trailers Change the Math

Site surveys for RV and trailer shops look different than a standard automotive bay, and this is where the install prep really started. The site survey also flagged that the existing electrical panel needed a dedicated circuit added before the hydraulic power unit could be installed — a fix that took an extra afternoon but avoided tripping breakers during the shop’s busiest weeks.

Choosing Capacity for Trailers, Not Just Trucks

Sizing a rotary 2-post lift for an RV and trailer shop isn’t the same exercise as sizing one for a general repair garage. Trailers can carry deceptively heavy axle loads even when the frame itself looks light, and travel trailers loaded for service sometimes weigh more than people expect. We walked through the shop’s actual customer mix — mostly travel trailers and utility trailers with a handful of small toy haulers — and sized the lift with margin above the heaviest unit they regularly saw rather than the average.

Arm configuration mattered here too. Trailer frames and axle placement don’t match car and truck pickup points, so we spent extra time during install prep confirming arm reach and pad placement would actually contact solid frame points on the shop’s typical trailers, not just automotive pinch welds. Getting that wrong on day one would have meant an unsafe lift point or arms that couldn’t reach far enough under a longer trailer frame — exactly the kind of detail a rushed quote skips over.

Install Day: What Actually Happened

Install day took a full day plus a half-day of electrical work that had been scheduled ahead of time based on the site survey findings. The crew anchored the baseplate into the shop’s slab, ran hydraulic lines, and calibrated the safety locks before doing a full load test with a trailer already on-site rather than just an empty test — a detail the shop owner specifically appreciated, since it proved the rotary 2-post lift handled real-world loads before anyone signed off.

The only hiccup came from the shop’s older building wiring, which needed a subpanel upgrade beyond what the initial survey estimated. That pushed the timeline back about a week, but it also meant the shop avoided a nuisance-tripping circuit that would have shut the lift down mid-job later. It’s a good reminder that even a thorough site survey sometimes uncovers issues that only show up once walls get opened up — budget a little schedule slack for exactly that.

First 90 Days: Brake Service Got Faster Almost Immediately

The real test came in the first three months of actual use. Rotor swaps that used to take the better part of an hour per axle with ramps and jacks dropped significantly once technicians could get full wheel-off access at a comfortable working height on the rotary 2-post lift. Being able to spin a wheel freely, pull it entirely, and work at chest height instead of on a creeper changed how fast brake jobs moved through the shop.

It also changed what jobs the shop could take on. With reliable full-access lifting, they started accepting more brake and suspension work on trailers they might have previously referred out, since ramps and jacks made those jobs too slow to be worth it. Within the first quarter, the shop owner told us the lift had already paid for a meaningful chunk of itself just in labor time saved on brake service alone — the kind of return that’s hard to see on paper before you actually own one.

What We’d Tell Any Shop Considering the Same Install

Looking back at the full first year, the lessons are straightforward. Get the site survey right before you commit to a configuration — ceiling height, slab condition, and electrical capacity all shape whether an overhead or baseplate rotary 2-post lift makes more sense, and guessing on any of those three creates expensive surprises during install. Size capacity around your heaviest realistic job, not your average one, especially if trailers or RVs are part of your regular workload.

The other lesson is patience with the schedule. This shop’s install ran about a week longer than the original quote because of the electrical panel issue, and in hindsight nobody regretted the delay — running an underpowered circuit would have caused real problems mid-brake-job down the road. A year in, this rotary 2-post lift has become the shop’s default tool for brake service and rotor swaps, and the install prep that felt slow in the moment is exactly why it’s worked without a hitch since.
