A rotary 2 post lift safety checklist isn’t paperwork you fill out once and forget in a drawer — it’s the ten minutes that keeps a vehicle from coming off the arms while someone’s underneath it. Start With the Concrete and the Anchors

Every rotary 2 post lift safety checklist has to start below the columns, not at them. Rotary lifts anchor into the slab with wedge bolts rated for a specific pull-out load, and that rating only holds if the concrete itself is sound. We check for hairline cracks radiating out from any anchor, for anchors that spin freely when you snug the nut, and for any sign the base plate has rocked — a shiny worn ring around a bolt hole is a giveaway that it’s been moving.

We also check slab thickness and age against what the columns require. A rotary 2 post lift installed on a driveway slab poured for foot traffic, not a lift rated for several tons per column, is a liability no matter how new the equipment is. Cables, Sheaves, and the Equalization System

Rotary two post lifts synchronize columns through a cable-and-sheave system, and this is where wear hides in plain sight. We run our hands down the cable looking for broken strands, flat spots, or rust bleeding through the jacket. One broken strand doesn’t mean instant failure, but it means the cable is done — replace it, don’t wait. We also check that both columns rise evenly; if one side lags, a cable has stretched or a sheave is binding, and that lift doesn’t go back into service until it’s corrected.

Sheave bearings get grease and a spin test. A sheave that doesn’t turn freely wears the cable unevenly and accelerates failure on one side only, which is how shops end up with a lift that was fine last month and suddenly isn’t. We also inspect the equalizer cable tension adjustment — most Rotary models have a simple turnbuckle or adjustment nut, and if it’s been cranked to the end of its travel, that’s the cable telling you it needs replacing, not adjusting further.

Locking Mechanisms and Safety Latches

The mechanical locks are the actual safety device on a rotary 2 post lift — the hydraulics lift the vehicle, but the locks hold it. We run the carriage up and down through several lock positions and confirm each one engages audibly and fully, not just a partial catch. A lock that engages on the first tooth but slips to the second under light load is a lock that’s worn or has a weak return spring, and it needs parts, not a shrug.

We also check that the release mechanism, whether it’s a cable pull or a rod linkage, returns cleanly and doesn’t hang up. A stuck release that a tech has to yank on defeats the purpose of a fast, reliable lock. We’d rather lose a day of shop revenue than have a lock give out under a loaded vehicle.

Arms, Pads, and Contact Points

Bent arms, worn pins, and mismatched pads cause more slip-related close calls than any hydraulic failure. We check arm restraint pins for wear that lets an arm swing loose under load, and we check pad height adjusters for stripped threads or pads that won’t hold their set height under weight. Mismatched pad height between the front and rear arms is one of the most common causes of a vehicle rocking on the lift, and it’s an easy thing to miss on a quick glance.

We also look at the arm restraint latch itself — the piece that keeps a swung-out arm from drifting back under a moving vehicle. If that latch doesn’t hold, a tech positioning arms can get an arm swing back unexpectedly. On any rotary 2 post lift safety checklist, arms and pads get treated the same as locks and cables: worn hardware here doesn’t fail gracefully, it fails suddenly.

Hydraulic System and Fluid Condition

Low or contaminated fluid shows up as slow lift, uneven rise, or a lift that drifts down overnight. We check fluid level and color at the reservoir, look for water contamination (milky fluid, usually from condensation in an unheated shop), and check hose fittings for seepage. A slow leak at a fitting doesn’t look urgent, but it’s the same failure mode as a cable with one broken strand — it’s telling you what’s coming.

We also cycle the lift through a full range of motion and listen. Chattering, grinding, or a hydraulic cylinder that hesitates before it moves are all symptoms worth chasing down before they become a stalled lift with a vehicle stuck at height. Fluid and hoses are cheap compared to a mid-lift failure, and on a rotary 2 post lift safety checklist they get checked every visit, not just at annual service.

Daily Operator Checks vs. Annual Inspections

Before raising a vehicle, an operator should confirm the arms are positioned on manufacturer-approved lift points, the locks engage at the working height, and there’s nothing under the lift path that could interfere.
