Configuration One: Standard Single-Acting Cylinder with Cable-Actuated Restraint

The most common setup we see on older Rotary two-post lifts in alignment shops uses a single-acting rotary air cylinder that pulls a cable running to each arm restraint. When the technician steps on the release pedal, air pressure drives the cylinder rod, which pulls the cable taut and disengages the safety-cam locks on both arms simultaneously. This is a simple, low-part-count system, and it has been reliable for decades because there is not much to fail beyond the cylinder seals, the cable itself, and the return spring.

The tradeoff is timing. If the cylinder is even slightly underpowered, or if seals have started to weep air, the cable will not pull far enough to fully clear the safety cam on both arms at once. We have seen alignment techs in the Quad Cities fight this exact problem for months, assuming it was a cable stretch issue, when actually the cylinder was down 15-20% on output pressure. A rebuilt or new rotary air cylinder restores full stroke and fixes the timing instantly, which is why we always check cylinder output before touching cable adjustment on a service call.

Configuration Two: Dual Independent Cylinders per Arm

Some newer alignment-rated two-post lifts, and a number of retrofit kits we install, use a separate rotary air cylinder mounted at each arm rather than one central cylinder pulling a shared cable. Each arm restraint releases independently when its own cylinder actuates, which means there is no single point of failure that locks up both arms at once. For a busy alignment bay running multiple vehicles a day, this setup tends to hold up better because wear is distributed across two smaller cylinders instead of one cylinder doing all the work through a cable system.

The downside is cost and complexity when it comes time to rebuild. You are now maintaining two cylinders instead of one, and if they wear unevenly you can end up with one arm restraint releasing a half-second before the other, which some technicians find disorienting during a fast alignment cycle. We generally recommend this configuration for higher-volume shops, while the single cylinder and cable setup remains a perfectly good choice for a smaller independent operation doing steady but not high-volume alignment work.

Why Safety-Cam Engagement Timing Actually Matters

Safety-cam engagement is not just a convenience feature, it is what keeps a vehicle from dropping if hydraulic pressure is lost while it sits on the lift. If your rotary air cylinder is not generating enough force to fully retract the cam mechanism, technicians sometimes force the arm restraint manually, which defeats the entire purpose of the safety system. We have inspected lifts in alignment shops where the cam was engaging on one arm but not the other because of exactly this kind of cylinder weakness, and it is a liability problem as much as a mechanical one.

The fix is almost always straightforward. A worn rotary air cylinder can usually be rebuilt with new seals rather than replaced outright, provided the bore is not scored or pitted. Diagnosing Which Configuration You Actually Have

The quickest way to tell is to look at the release pedal linkage. If you see one cable running to a junction point that splits to both arms, you have the single central cylinder setup. If you see two separate air lines running independently to each arm’s restraint mechanism, you have the dual cylinder configuration.

Knowing which setup you have matters when you call for parts, because the cylinder bore, stroke length, and port fittings differ between the two systems even on lifts from the same manufacturer. We ask every caller for the lift’s serial number and a photo of the cylinder tag before quoting, because guessing wrong on a rotary air cylinder order means a second shipment and more downtime in your bay, which nobody wants during a busy alignment week.

What Alignment Shops in the Quad Cities Are Seeing Right Now

Either way, the goal is getting your arm restraints back to full, even engagement on both sides so the safety-cam system is doing what it is designed to do.

Keeping Your Alignment Lift Compliant and Insurable

Insurance carriers and ALI inspectors increasingly ask specific questions about arm restraint function during annual lift inspections, and a weak rotary air cylinder is one of the most common findings we see written up. A lift that passes visual inspection but fails to fully engage its safety cams on both arms is technically out of compliance, even if it looks fine sitting in the bay.

We recommend treating your cylinder condition as part of your regular compliance checklist, not a separate item.
